An archive film digitised by Dave Cherry from the original cine film shot by Walt Rennison.
It shows Worsbrough Common, Worsbrough Bridge and Barnsley town centre.
It then follows a remarkable car journey from Mount Vernon at Ward Green to the centre of Sheffield.
The journey on the A61 takes in fascinating scenes of the area before the M1 motorway was built.
Steve Rennison speaks to Dave Cherry FACE TO FACE.
He explains the workings of the original Japanese, clockwork, cine camera, on which the original film was shot by his Dad.
The music is by Dave Cherry.

Superb Video, I live in Deepcar but always fascinated by Local History. I love the Glimpse of Worsborough Level Crossing and the "Old A61 Road" just past Birdwell Before the M1 was built. Often wondered what it looked like.

Fantastic! This was filmed a year before I was born, so it's nice to see some of the Tarn as it was about that time. Cheers for this Dave. All the best Mark.

Well thank you. Its certainly nice to be appreciated. I normally get silly comments like the car registration being the wrong year etc. This film was difficult to do from the clockwork 8mm. Did you know that Ken Loach used it on a BBC film about his life. Ta for your interest. Dave.

I showed it to the lads at Radio Sheffield. Andy Kershaw is one of my close friends and they were fascinated by the old white buses, the gasometers on the right passed the Wednesday ground and the Christmas decorations in the city. The Birdwell turn off is most interesting going to Tankersley -before the M1 in 1968. They sometimes ask me to show my films there in the city. Also I have clips of the old Central Line at High Green and the last train from Victoria in January 1970 over Woodhead. Other stuff is on my web site-- DC

Great stuff! Recognise most of the journey and all of it from the junction to Wortley. Penistone Road was so packed with houses back then and, as with other areas demolished, it just makes you wonder where all those people went.

Thanks for your comments. It's nice to have feedback like yours. It took me ages to do it. The original film was so shaky as it was done on a clockwork 8mm cine camera. I had to slow it down and then try to enhance the colours which were faded. As I said on the film I came from the council estate on the left going down Worsbrough Bridge so it was nice to look back on my childhood. Cheers. Dave Cherry.

Ever considered letting the guys atTalking Pictures about this great film? It wouldn't feature on 'The Footage Detectives', but this is the sort of stuff they love to show. I remember the level crossing and the trip all the way to Sheffield where I live, though the road layout has changed around the Birdwell ( I think ) area or there abouts and I lost my way for a while.

There is a Austin A35 van in the colour part of the video and there is a letter C at the end of the number plate.That is a 1965 registration.

9:08 Henderson's Relish billboard? Charming little film, really enjoyed listening to your reminiscences, and it was interesting to see how it all looked. The music was an unusual twist, and the driving (was it really that bad or just the jerkiness of the film) kept me on the edge of my seat!

Definitely not 1959. The car is following a Sheffield AEC Bridgemaster bus which didn't enter service until 1961. Also, there are no signs of tram tracks when entering Sheffield through Wadsley Bridge on a route which didn't close until October 1959.

The film could be a little later, you know, maybe 1964/5.... going off some of the buses that are running in Sheffield in the film.

@@DaveCherry I did wonder if bits were filmed on different dates. By the hole in the road, a bus crosses with a body type that came new in 1964.

@DaveCherry it can't be 59 , wolseley 16/60 , came out in 62 , cortina Mk 1 1962 , I also spotted a ford corsair, launched 1963 , also see a jaguar MK 10 , of 1961 , and a few BMC 1100S ,again launched in 1962 , if I were to guess this is late 62/ early 63.

I think this film was taken after 1965. If you look at the Austin A35 van at 3.35 mins and again at 15.02 mins, it clearly shows the registration as HFK 414C which was a 1965 registration.How could it have been filmed in 1959?
@DaveCherry
@DaveCherry 9 лет назад
Stephen Wharton You most probably are right Stephen. However the first part in monochrome is definitely 1959. The clue is the CUTTING EDGE pub at Worsbrough Bridge was not built until 1959. Steve Rennison the bloke on the film with me and whose dad took the film says you are probably right. I am not trying to deceive anybody and just hoping I give pleasure to people with my free social history films. You take care Stephen.

Great footage, but the presence of a C-plated Austin A35 van dates it at 1965 at the very earliest.

This , or part of it can't be 1959 , the film begins with a wolseley 16/60 ,which replaced the tall finned 15/60 , in 1962 , also spotted cortina MK1s also 1962 , nevertheless a great film .

Sorry to disappoint you but the monochrome black and white start is 1959. The coloured remainder is shot later. The film was an unusual 9mm plastic celluloid shot on a wind up clockwork camera hence the jumping and was very difficult to do. Cheers Dave Cherry
