Back in 2016, we all gave Mordo crap for being such a magic nerd.
[mocking voice] Ohhh don’t break the rules, don’t mess with reality, we all have to follow the magic laws. The bill comes due…
relax Mordo, live a little. Sometimes you gotta break some rules.
But…. after everything that went down in phase 4, I think Mordo deserves an apology. He was so right about…. well everything.
Just look at what happened in these last couple years. The Westview incident. The Scarlet Witch. The memory spell. The darkhold. And the latest episode of She-Hulk proves Mordo’s point even further.
Wong, our new sorcerer supreme, decided to prison-break a dangerous criminal and fight him in an underground cage fight.
Now sure, in the grand scale of things, what Wong did is mostly small potatoes compared to the laws of reality being broken by everyone else.
But you see, what Wong did, that’s the root cause of the problem, the very thing that Mordo warned us about.
Big or small, it’s about the mindset. And the mindset is that Wong didn’t give the consequences much thought, he developed this dangerous entitlement that allowed him to justify his actions. This same mindset is what led to Stephen casting that memory spell that nearly ended reality.
And they all just keep proving that Mordo was right. These powerful magic users, who are supposedly heroes, don’t care about the rules nor their consequences. And yet everybody else must keep paying for their mistakes.
So the court is in session, it’s time to present to you all the evidence that proves that Mordo was right, and why the bill comes due….
Ok so let’s first begin with She-Hulk.
Last year, we saw Wong fighting the Abomination in a cage fight. None of us really understood why Wong was having underground fight clubs, but it was a fun cameo.
But now we know what that was all about.
As Wong explained… [clip].
So [take a deep breath]….. Wong, the sorcerer supreme…. the main magic guy who protects reality. He decided that he needed a worthy opponent for his training.
Ok that tracks…mostly.
I mean by this point, it’s been like 6 years or more since the snap, meaning Wong was acting as the sorcerer supreme all of these years since Stephen was dusted. So by now he should be pretty well trained.
Anyway, Wong decided that from all the super powerful people he knows - and he knows A Lot of super people - the one person he needs for his training is a dangerous convicted super-criminal who is held in a highly secured prison. And instead of, you know asking for permission, he just opened a portal to Blonsky’s cell, prison-breaked him against his wishes, and forced him to a cage fight.
Wong didn’t care about the laws, he didn’t think he needed to ask for permission.
He had to know that if anyone finds out about Blonsky’s cage fighting that will be very bad for him, considering he’s supposed to be in a cell.
Wong isn’t from some ancient far off land, he’s from Earth. He listens to Beyonce and likes flavored ice cream, so he knows the basic concept of the legal system.
Based on his reaction, the legal ramifications for his actions are unreasonable. He thinks he can just explain himself and his reasoning and position is sufficient in clearing himself and Blonsky from any wrong-doing.
But this isn’t a case where he had no choice in breaking the rules, this wasn’t some world ending event. This was a simple decision, made by him.
I’m not saying that Wong is a bad guy, he made a dumb mistake, stuff happens. The problem here is this out-of-touch mindset that he, Stephen and some others have developed in recent years. This idea that
rules don’t apply to them like they do to regular people.
In Wong’s mind, he shouldn’t face any legal ramifications for his actions because he’s the sorcerer supreme.
He thinks that what he did was for the betterment of the world. He is the sorcerer supreme, and to be better at his job he needs to train against the meanest and strongest threats. In the end of the day, he didn’t cause any harm, and Blonsky returned to his cell, so nothing bad really happened here.
