Titanium technologies have been used in military for quite some time. They can be found in the integral shell of attack helicopters, the frame of the world's largest flying missile carrier 2160 and the backbone of the most modern Russian SU-57 fighter. Titanium is a common practice in aviation and space but the conquest of underwater space with the use of titanium is an unprecedented event.
Submarines of the third generation are the most modern among the titanium ones. They do not go for records, but they are the best for their time as already recognized by NATO. Neither in the USA, nor in Great Britain, nor in China has anyone yet to ever built such submarines. Nobody but us. The submarines of project 945 Barracuda and project 945A Condor are the main characters of the new episode of "Combat Approved".

I did a paper in school on Russian technical prowess and their ability to do all kinds of incredible shit with titanium. I guess you develop the expertise when you are sitting on 98% of the planets titanium reserves. Their skill at welding titanium is second to none! I believe that the Russians also developed a method of spinning titanium like a spider spins a web. The information is alluded to but as an American, it was very difficult to obtain any tangible technical references pertaining to the art.

These boats are surely marvels of engineering. The production of the hulls was literally breathtaking in boat sized purge gas chambers that the welders needed breathing apparatus in. And then they made them noisy and deaf compared to their western counterparts. Although the sierras became much better than before.

Это не было моим намерением ;) See, I am German. I did my fair share of military service. I never felt any bad feelings towards Russia. Not that uncommon btw. so politics aside. I do love the show and see what tech you guys come up with. I just feel like the days of obvious propaganda is long gone. Everybody does a little advertisement. That's fine. But please.... for the love of god, tune down this cringy obvious flexing. And I get it that the native version is to inform the broad range of Russian people about the mighty military. But at least give us a somewhat normal sounding translator. It's not an action film you know :) other than that... good job, and I am looking forward what's next. Not sure if I missed it but is there an episode with the Kirov class cruiser? Would be dope to learn more about that behemoth. I am pretty sure the Russian translation doesn't make sense at all. Let me know if I insulted anybody. Wasn't my intention ;)

I genuinely love this type of submarines it is a shame that they stopped modernising and refitting the Sierra A, I genuinely believe it can out perfume submarines like the los angelelese class or even the severmanosk by just getting a new propeller, thicker newer coating and modifying electronics. But then again the Akula is having the same problems, its sad, Russian/soviet Technology is so different from western doctrine and they can honestly out perfume them if just upgraded. Like instead of Russia building improved kilo class all the time and the Lada class they can just refit and upgrade these.

The captain's diagonal seating reminds me of the bridge design concept of the original series of Star Trek where the bridge is offset diagonally to the direction of travel which caused a lot of confusion among Star Trek fans. Really nice submarine class. Sadly only 2 operational out of the original 4 and only titanium hulled submarine's left in the Russian navy, if you don't included unarmed ones like the Losharik. Steel hulled won out in the end when these competed with the Project 971s. One of the factors was the 971 could be built wider as Titanium assembly docks were too narrow and costly to widen thus allowing it to have a bigger and more modern bow sonar array. While the Project 945As fixed this by removing the bigger diameters tubes and having 6x533mm instead of the 8 4x533mm by 4x650mm tubes of the Project 945. Hence why the navy really just wants to keep their more modern Project 945A's in the navy. At the cost of these submarines and the difficulty in making wider and more desired hulls, it's doubtful any more submarines of this size will ever be constructed by Russia. The last of their kind. Interestingly enough the submarine's original screw was a 6 bladed titanium propeller (You can find photos of it, it's really cool), though we can see this has been changed to a quieter 7 bladed skewback propeller in the model on the desk at 12:28. I wonder if this is also titanium. I know most brass propellers use sacrificial plates welded to the hull. Is this not possible with a titanium ship or did they just want to go to the effort of making the submarine as light as possible. The cost must have been enormous for such little savings if so. This was a great video going into the process of welding, talking about galvanic corrosion and so many more interesting things most people don't know about the hardships of working with these metals.

Russia makes the best Sub's, I don't buy NATO BS that Russia subs are noisey, Russia has always made great subs from the Alfa, to the puppa in the 60s, okay they were noisy, but stealth isn't everything, as being able to dive deep and fast is just as important for a sub survival. The Sierra class sub is a unique sub that can dive over 4000ft, which is three time deeper then any NATO sub, also they are just as quite as a second class 688 attack submarine.
