Hooked a nice barracuda on a fly I tied years ago while wet wading near Bahia Honda Key. 7 Mile bridge in the distance.
** Note: fast forward to about 2:40 for the Cuda hookup **
Check out the clear water, sharing it with a shark and a stingray (towards the end of the video). March 7, 2021.
He took a couple of nice runs, then shook my hook on his first jump, which was barbless and too lightweight for this guy; he bent the trailing "stinger" hook. The fly is about 6 inches long, tied with synthetic hair and weighted with barbell eyes. I was trying to imitate a needlefish. Because barracuda have big, sharp teeth, I added a wire leader and attached the stinger hook with wire which made this fly heavy, which was challenging and awkward to cast with the 9 foot, 8 weight flyrod I was using. But it was what I had, and I managed with it.
