What's so sad about this scene was that it was in the middle of Thomas's worst mental decline. He was railroading so fast to his suicide attempt at this point. Helping Andy gave him something to focus on, to live for in a sense. But when Andy took up the schoolmaster's offer (rightly-the man was trained to help), it took away the last of Thomas's will to live.

I hadn't considered the schoolmaster contributing to Thomas's suicide attempt but you might be right.

One thing that strikes me, is that Thomas desperately wanted friends. Everyone thought he was predatory and looking for a love interest, but it's clear all the way through the recent movie that he also wants to be treated like a normal guy by the men around him. But they all fear and shun him. When he meets Ellis (spoiler alert) he is thrilled to find a man he can be friends with, just another "bloke" he doesn't have to hid or pretend with.

The thing with Ellis was really nice 😭 Thomas truly looked like he was just happy to have a friend and might not have even known Ellis swung that way, because he looked genuinely surprised when he put his finger on his mouth, eyes all wide

I'm glad Andy finally realized Thomas only wanted to help him and be friends with him, and stopped making his opinion of Thomas based on what the others told him. Everyone knew what happened with Jimmy was O'Brien's fault, yet they were all so eager to blame Thomas of trying the same thing with Andy... It was awful and uncalled for, but it's nice Andy saw past that eventually.
@holohulolo
@holohulolo 4 года назад
Can't blame them, Thomas was untrustworthy to begun with. He had always been scheming with o'brien. Doing it out of jealousy and ambitious desire is one thing, what made him so untrustworth was bates, was someone who showed him compassion, even after he knew what thomas did to him, he choose not to take revenge or retaliate in any way. Thomas knew that and still tried to sabotage bates all the same. The only person who ever retaliated was o'brien because they were the same, thomas would've done the aame to o'brien if he could. People don't trust him, and rightfully so. He's whole arc of finally feeling starting to repent was only apparent to the viewers, the story he told and what he did to change himself. It was only until he tried to kill himself that some of them knew that he was really trying to change.
@holohulolo
@holohulolo 4 года назад
If anything, I think Amdy was smart enough to listen to the other people. Look at o'brien's nephew, she probably told him a bit about thomas but he chose to trust him and got sabotaged, that's when o'brien took action.
@amberanime
@amberanime 2 года назад
@@holohulolo I'd agree with you if people where purely warning him for Thomas his scheming. However rather then warning him about Thomas his scheming everyone seemed more concerned Thomas was trying to seduce him when Thomas was doing no such thing. The homophobia comes trough strong in this. Which I get it, time period. And for that time period people in that house are very tolerating all things considerd. But that fact people where protecting Andy from Thomas his gay ness, rather then his scheming, is what always rubbed me the wrong way. Thomas has been a brat many times. And Your right to warn people about that. But when you see Thomas trying to do better and actualy being nice to somebody new, dont go out of your way to sabotage that either.

@marionarda2790 2 года назад
I was not upset at Carson accusing him . It was logical . Carson has a very low opinion of him( rightfully so to a degree) and is indeed cautious after the jimmy incident . So him asking Thomas for explaination is fair . Unkind but fair . What s clearly unfair is that carson didn t want the truth , didn t believe Thomas, didn t ask andy . Didn t even ask Mrs Patmore later after she learned the real reason .He just wanted to demean and insult the guy .

"I have known worse"It such a sad line... his whole life people has treated him horrible because he was different. And when he find someone to trust/like.. they either die (Sybil and Edward), are forced to leave (Jimmy) or betray him (O'Brien) Its no wonder he was so bitter at the start of the show..

He also saved the kids from not only that abusive nanny, but also a boring childhood; nobody else in the house - besides maybe Tom - was willing to play with Sybbie and George because they all were too formal to indulge their basic needs to just BE children for a while.

I had a friend years back who didn't know it at first but eventually figured out that her father was unable to read. The library in my town has had a program to teach adults how to read. Andy's problem is still with us even today. Reading, writing and books are among the greatest blessings of my life. I can't imagine being illiterate and cut off from so much, how terrible it must be. If there was an Andy in my life I would be more than happy to help out. P.S.---When elementary school in the 1960's I learned phonics and that was possibly the best thing I ever learned in school; being able to figure out words allowed me to gain much education just on my own.

For me it is math and numbers. No matter how hard I have tried, (and still try) it just didn't click, beyond the most basic level. And even that is a challenge. Or, I would finally, *finally* understand something, only for the knowledge to flee by the next day, leaving in its wake the remembrance of having once understood. Even more frustrating. About ten years ago an instructor with a course that I was taking diagnosed Dyscalculia.

It's such a horrible thing for Andy. Just imagine that you're a new worker and everyone tries to warn you about some "bad&gay" bloke. So you act normal, but not really good around him, and you just not let him be your friend. Then he hepls you with you problem, but you're still not as close friends as you could be, because you don't feel like it. Then you just forget about him and not much later you find him in the bathtub full of his own blood. Andy is a new guy there, he didn't know Thomas for as long as the others, so he can't really have the only opinion about this man. And it must be so bloody terrifying, when the man who you didn't pay attention, but he acted well towards you, tries to kill himself. Andy definetely feels bad about himself and thinks that it was his fault. Just so sorry for both of them, but I'm glad that they found their way to be friends

Thomas is my favourite character in this show. I was so pissed by him in the first seasons as he was ill speaking here and there but knowing his background and seeing him suffering broke my heart and it gave a clear understanding to why he was behaving that way. It hurts me to know that he chose that because he never was shown kindness by anyone other than Sybil ...
