A braai is a barbeque. This is unfortunately one of my 100% South African stories. I'm sure you'll find some other more universal stories on the channel. Enjoy
My BFF is originally from South Africa and she invited me over to her family's braai. It was very, very lekker and they were fairly prompt in the serving of their food. Also, I had some of her mom's milktert for dessert and it literally changed my life. Said friend is also why I know about you and your comedy and I am super grateful about that.
Well this is accurate. As a saffa I know when they mean braai as in we are going to stuff ourselves and braai.. we are actually just gonna drink klippies n coke all night. To my non sa friends I always tell them eat something before you come over... better yet bring over your own food- bring n braai..
I tell you ... i have watched this clip so many times!!! it is just so perfect. I am a Seff Efrican, and have a tosser of a brother in law, Gillie ... that this snippet is like a home movie. We get there at 4 or 5, we have to beg to braai around 10pm, and when we turn our backs, there is a fresh pile of logs on the braai. I am sure that there are tons of Seffies that can say the same. Had the pleasure of watching Barry live ... if you can, do it .. it is a total lag fest.
Never knew this about us Afrikaaners until I moved to China 17 years ago. Then I started noticing people's "wandering and wondering" eyes at about 7. It is absolutely true...
I love the Boere.....and boy can they drink !!!! But as much as they love to drink...... they love their food and have never gone hungry at one of their homes !!!!! But left many a time a helluva frot !!!!!
jissis my cousin you need to come sort us out in London again!! We braai groot hier!!! These real properse rooinekke tune us we're crazy all the time. Next one I'm making him watch your video! LEkker
No man, Barry! Rookie mistake. Always treat a braai as supper. Or the next day's breakfast. You gotta eat first, boet. And take some Simba along to nibble on while you "braai". ;)
this happened to me, with my last boss, 15 years ago (own business now), braai'ed at his house, lit the first at 9, let it die almost completely at 11, and the meat finished at like 11:40 it went so slowly... nou gaan ons braai
I am a Boertjie, and Barry talks the truth. :-) Culturally really interesting -- the idea is to kuier (visit) as you braai -- it is about the journey, not just the food. But in my case, I do not dop (booze) and that part of the culture I do not smaak (like) at all.
