I've worked as a concert stagehand, sound engineer and lighting tech for over 25 years. I've worked for just about everyone from Metallica to Celine Dion. No one was more professional and understood his role in all of it more than Manilow. He showed up on time, started the show on time, gave the audience everything they wanted, ended on time and was out the door so we could do our work for the next show. Not a fan of the music itself, but I have the utmost respect for him as a performer.
Thank you so much for expression your respect for Barry Manilow as a great professional as he is. He deserves our empathy, respect and love. I feel very grateful to you. ❤
If you knew me in High School 1976-77 Barry Manilow was my crush. I even sent him an invitation to my High School graduation 1977...Way to go Barry Manilow...You've made so many people happy...
I realize now I've been listening to his music for 50 years; from the simple message of "One of These Days" in 1973, to the devastatingly direct, but simple "Where You Go", which he rearranged and performed himself on an album of songs from "Harmony", which is finally on Broadway (never mind the earlier jingles, or VSM). The songs have helped me through the most difficult times, and helped celebrate the few good ones. Good thing he found his way out from behind the piano.
My mother was a 'Fanilow'. She loved him. I took her to see him at Radio City one year for a 'Greatest Hits' show. I knew his music but wasn't much of a "fan" - until I took her. It was hit after hit. He was charming, self-effacing and his band was top notch. Now at 53, there's a sprinkling of his hits on my ApplePlay and while my Mom has since left us, part of what keeps me connected to her are the 6-7 songs sprinkled on my own personal jukebox. And the reality is this: he's a genius for what he did. These songs will last forever.
He’s long over for a Kennedy center honors next year. He wrote sophisticated songs that made people cry, think and feel. Plus he produced for classic artists like Bette Midler, Dionne Warwick, Sarah Vaughn, etc.
Despite the disdain of so many people, I always liked him. Extraordinary musician. In the mid-1970s, I caught a ride home with a college buddy - the AM radio station played Mandy so many times, by the time I got home, I knew the melody, lyrics, and all the harmonies and key changes! Unlike so many others from that era, he survived and he’s still here. Bravo.
I was a little punk when my Mom would play his album over and over. Now I will have Copacabana playing in my head the next few days. 😂 Seriously, what a legend.
As a dorky Jewish teenager, I had the biggest crush on Barry Manilow. His posters were on my wall, I had his albums (including his greatest hits that I won for free from a radio station). He just made me feel good.
In the early 80’s, I had just arrived to the United States. I got my driver’s license on Friday and had to drive 25 miles away in the highway for the first time. His music calmed my nerves for the 2 years of driving in terrifying traffics in Dallas. I’m in my 60’s now and every time I hear his songs, I’d always have a big smile. What a joy to see he is still being creative.
As always, CBS Sunday Morning does it right. Wonderful career retrospective. Manilow is a legend as stated. It’s a crime that someone who has played such an outstanding role in American music has not been recognized by the Kennedy Center. Here’s to hoping that honor comes soon.
My word. He's been apart of my whole life. Mandy would be my favorite. Used to make me cry as a child. So much emotion in that song. Love you Barry Manilow ❤️
My parents took our family to my first concert in Boston as a teen in the 1970s - Barry Manilow. I heard Mandy and I was hooked for 40+ years. Saw him in MD a few years back and he still put on an amazing show in his 70s.
This 70 y/o born in NYKr, is a "fanilow" for life! He is an American Music Icon - He deserves a Kennedy award and throw in an Oscar for good measure! He still has the best hair!
Over 30 years ago my KISS, Metallica, AC/DC loving fiancé (now husband) stood in line to buy tickets to one of Manilow's shows as my birthday present since I had been a fan for years. He came with me, but had no real desire or interest in seeing Manilow, based on all that he heard from critics and such (besides not being "his" type of music). When the show ended he turned to me and said "Wow! I actually enjoyed that. Now I know why so many like him. He is a natural born showman." That's his appeal- so glad Manilow didn't stay just behind the scenes.
I saw him three times back in the late 70s. What a phenomenal performer. He delivered a fun, energetic show that people stood up dancing and singing along. Great memories!!!
There are a few rare performers whose professionalism and good taste and good sense match their huge artistic talents. Barry Manilow is one of these very few. I've always enjoyed his songs, marveled at his broad and rich contributions to pop culture and entertainment, and hope i get to see his new show. Congratulations, Mr Manilow. My hat is off to you 👏🎩🎶🎹🏆
Mr. Manilow… YOU SIR have amazed us with your talent, your incredible musical skills, your ongoing ability to capture emotional and musical excellence that gave us such purity, such talent, and such happiness and solace. 🙏 THANK YOU
I have been HUGE fan since 1974 and this may be the BEST interview with, and about him EVER. Perfect blending of vintage and current clips. Well done! Luv ya, Barry!!!
70s/80s kid here...I had every Barry Manilow record, and played them on my little, blue record player, while wearing my Barry Manilow t-shirt 😂 To this day, many years later, I still love him, and his music, just as much as I loved Duran Duran and all the rest from that time period. Thank you for sharing more of his story!
A friend of mine Jon Emmanuel was in COPACOBANA and Barry came to see the tour in Manchester and was unhappy with the orchestration so he personally paid massive overtime to the orchestra and spent several hours fixing it by ear! He said it was a masterclass in musicianship.
Me too! The Robin Hood Dell West, now the Mann Music Center in West Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. Summer of ‘77. I was just a little girl, and fell madly in love with Barry♥️ I’ll never forget it. It was the start of a lifelong love of his music…Weekend in New England is my absolute favorite song😊
Barry....I just found this one. It is good and I love it. You do such great interviews. He seems to be very grateful for all his awards. Love you Barry.................Betsy Basile
Love David Pogue segments! Was so thrilled to hear Harmony finally made it to Broadway. I saw one of the first incarnations at La Jolla Playhouse over 25 years ago, starring a younger Danny Burstein, the late, great Rebecca Luker, and Patrick Wilson. I saw the off-off-Broadway production at the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene more recently, and it brought back so many memories (with many changes over the decades). Where You Go, Stars in the Night, and Every Single Day are standout songs from the show.
Barry Manilow.... Thank you, Thank You, Thank You for writing songs that are pleasing to the ear, my heart feels so much joy when I hear or even think of Barry Manilow 💯💯💯👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💖💖💖👍👍👍💥💥💥💝💝💝🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽❣️❣️❣️
Sing Many his songs? Try All!! I saw him in concert in his heyday in Providence RI. My husband knew how much of a big fan I was (and still am) and took me there for my birthday. Every Christmas when he had a new album out my kids knew what to get me for Christmas. Manilow is so versatile he can do any genre. I would love to see this show but I no longer live close to NY.
Separate bathrooms! I appreciate Barry's professionalism and craftsmanship more each year, as those two words disappear from pop music. I will purchase Harmony tickets soon.
I liked him & his music, back in the day(70's)👍, was told one time'"" if you ever go to VEGAS,, don't miss a chance to see a Barry Manilow preformance,"",, , I've never been, but would ❤ to be able too!!!👏-- Thanks for sharing this🤗
I grew up on Manilow's GREAT songs. From this episode, I JUST realized WHAT IS BEHIND the criticisms of this man and his talents. I am SO GRATEFUL Americans have mostly "gotten over it!" (so petty and pathetic!) Looking forward to his musical! His life has been...... WELL DONE! (applause!)
I’m still in Love with Barry Manilow! He and his music got me through so many emotions in the 70’s and 80’s ! I can’t even tell you how many concerts I went to then butI remember being 8 months pregnant standing in line for Hours in Philadelphia and got 2nd row seats! my husband and I Still listen and sing along to them today especially on long car rides. Would Love to see his play on Broadway! ❤❤❤
My favorite Barry Manilow song is You Oughta Be Home With Me from his This One's for You album. It's a song that never got alot of publicity or fame and didn't even become a number one hit, but I love it.
I'm happy to know about the history of "Harmony," and good to see this interview with Barry, whose music was such a presence in my younger days!...Most artists dream and envision themselves having a career this big, so to hear that Barry never thought of it, is really unusual!!
He is amazing and i dont about the haters because believe me they all sing to his songs. Whether they realize it or not. Its barry Manilow the sing to🎉
I seen him when l was very young, what a great performer, voice, wonderful song writer, l was in Acapulco with 5 girlfriends and at the pool came that COPACABANA, well the pool went wild and boy did we party, good old days, but what a hangover, well, worth it.😂
