This game is a microcosm of Barry's career. I truly forgot how poor the offensive line was. He squeezed out every yard possible [and impossible]. Greatest RB ever.
@@josephdavis1704 I am a cowboys fan, but I can admit emmitt Smith count hold a candle to Barry on a track. And Barry was a great running back. But to say his offensive line and supporting cast was bad is a complete lie. You dont make the NFC championship simply because of your running back. As far as not using your blockers, it's well known he would ignore the design of the play to try to break long runs. When he did it, everyone loved it. But when it went bad like it did in green bay in 94, you get bad performances.
This is the game I remember watching live! Man! Barry Sanders, a 73 yard TD run and the very next carry he has is an 80 yard TD run called back for holding! Barry Sanders......The true GOAT...
That was one of the most exciting games I've ever watched! If Barry only would've been on a more well rounded team he'd have gotten the many super bowl rings he deserved. Best running back in NFL history if you ask me.
@@PlanetEarth3141 I made that comment before I saw Barry Sanders highlights, now after seeing them I can say without hesitation that Sanders is the GOAT at running back
@@LuOover mos def agree. During his time, there wasn't many dual threat backs. Thurman Thomas, Ricky Watters, and Marshall Faulk were the dual threats of his era because their coordinators were more innovative. Emmitt caught a ton of passes but lacked in run after catch.
@@qsplak You may want to check his numbers again. Emmitt was no Roger Craig, Marshall Faulk, LeVeon Bell, LT, Tiki Barber, Brian Westbrook, Ray Rice, etc. etc.
This was Barry's last year not a sign of slowing down. Could have ran for 20000 yds. According to his performance he had at least 3 to 5 more years as an elite running back.
@@KISS_MY_CONVERSE yeah, Barry was truly a class act on the field, not so much off... His main reason for quitting, when pushed beyond "l just didn't have it in me anymore", was that he was tired of watching the Lions let great talent go in free agency. That's what he wrote in his book. This is nonsense. Unlike any team then or since that I know of, the Lions held together the key components of that team for a long time. Ball, Spielman, Blades, Brown, Glover, White, Cofer, Gibson, Jamison, Crocket... All started with them in the 80s, and played at least 6 years in Detroit. Morton, Hanson, Moore, Jenkins, Owens, Pritchet, and several others who signed on in the early nineties stayed with them many years also. All quality players, several of them pro bowlers. Most did little or nothing after leaving the Lions also. They actually held onto their talent exemplarily. Such a shame, because I totally agree with you, he had another five to six thousand yards in him easily. To not honor his contract with pure bunk.
That would've been Barry's 100th rushing TD, he finished his career with 99. He finished his career averaging 99.8 yards per game, I read somewhere that this run would've put him over 100.
@@nicholasv7381 awesome hidden factual man. I've thought of the implications of that run. It also cost him 1500 yards that season. That would have gave him 6 season over 1500 yards out of 10. GOAT.
@@tiddiesovertitles4826 However, the rules favor modern QBs. More protection of the QB and less physicality in the secondary now. Back in the day, the QB would feel pressured to get the ball out as soon as they could due to the type of hits they would take. The defenses' main objective in those days was to somehow take the starting QB out of the game... mentally and physically.
Simply the best runner the NFL had ever seen. I use to use his highlights for motivation before my games in HS and college. The games that stuck out to me greatly were 97 against the bucs where Barry had 2 runs of over 80 yards, juked the shit outa John lynch, also the Thanksgiving game in 97 against the bears. Barry has the best vision in America, his ability to run by what he saw was incredible. He played with only two probowlers/all pros in his time there, really, which were Lomas Brown and Kevin Glover. Most of his career he ran for his life and got use to doing so, and would lose yards from time to time, but it was all worth it, cus with that style, it was only a matter of time before he broke a big one. Barry has the best yards to years ratio of ANY back in NFL history, that should tell ppl the whole story. Meaning Barry did the best with what he got compared to ALL runningbacks in NFL history. He's in a short, short class of back that we never saw a decline in, think about it, then on top of that no other back had a stronger career, start to finish like Barry
Absolutely... Green, Clark, Perriman, Moore, Morton, Crowell... Detroit was loaded at receiver through the 90s... And then couldn't draft a decent one 8 straight years, even in the first round!
I watched an interview where Barry said that he avoided Reggie at all costs. He said Reggie was the greatest defensive player ever, even better than Lawrence Taylor.
You know it's "funny" how many people blame Detroit for Barry's early departure. He had never said he had issues with Team or the Organization. I am sure losing takes a toll on you, but you can get that with 30 other teams every year. The reason he left when he did was because of Bobby Ross. I promise he would have kept playing if Wayne Fontes never would have been fired. If Barry was so bitter with Detroit why would he still go to most games and work for the team?!
@@craigpaulson3503 when Detroit Lions ownership starts building championship teams let me know. They have totally wasted careers of a top 5 running back and wide receiver in Calvin Johnson. Barry Sanders is a real man of integrity and loyalty, one in a million that's why he's still there. Wayne Fontes wasn't going to win any titles either way. Loyal to Fontes? loyal to The franchise never got him any rings
That 80 trader should have stood! He woulda hid last 2 carriers went for 67yrds. Then an 80yrder. He woulda had another 200yrd performance. G.O.A.T.#20
The late great Reggie White once said that Barry was the only man he feard on the field. He said one second hes in front of you than you blink and hes gone.
You wanna get your mind blown. Green Bay picked an offensive lineman at number two. Barry was number three. Derrick Thomas was four and Deion was five.
boy did lions fans love their football much better back then. the silverdome was nuts in that game. all the lions fans care about now is their beer because we suck so bad there's nothing to cheer about
Man do I miss these days of the Detroit Lions. Especially Barry Sanders. Even today, it just doesn't seem the same. Something is missing. 2019 Detroit Lions!🏈🏈
I was born and raised in Detroit. And I wish Barry was drafted by ANY other team but the Lions ! His true greatness was damaged because of the Ford family ( Lions owners)
Similar to the Giants horrid OLine today with a rb like Barkley, it'd be crazy if he ended his career without a ring because he'd be compared to Sanders the same way
The Packers had the chance to draft Sanders before Detroit in1989. They instead took an offensive lineman. Brett Favre could of been handing Barry the ball lmao.
Yep, Tony Mandarich who's the only top 5 pick in that draft to not make the Hall of Fame, if Sanders was drafted by Green Bay he'd easily be their best rb of all time because at the moment the best Green Bay rb is hard to pick
As 90's Packer fans whenever they would show "info-graphics" on the plan to stop Barry Sanders? ....we would look at each other and laugh or make some snarky comments like "yeah, right, that will work great, let's try that"
i was at this game when i was 16... LIFE ALTERING! BEST SPORT PERFORMANCE I EVER SAW [Barry OC] i SAW THIS LIVE!!! The Silverdome POPPED so hard i thought the dome was gonna collapse... INSANITY!! Farve was HANDLED! Reggie was CRAZY good but couldn't do it all! REF's SCREWED US as per usual... BARRY = GOAT... No way u could be at that game and say anyone could do what he did in that game... Refs STOLE that 80 yarder... 🤬🤬🤬 #DETROITvsEVERYBODY
Bad call! I’ll add 80 more yards to Barry’s total. Truly the greatest! If you watch today’s running backs, there’s no comparison. He was a transcending athlete. There won’t be another Barry Sanders!!
7:04 His last touchdown certainly is a memorable one, if only he was on a great team he probably would've gotten a ring and probably would've played long enough to be the all time leading rusher instead of Emmitt who unlike Barry had a great OLine Also if only Sanders was with Stafford and Calvin Johnson they'd most likely have a ring today
Emmitt Smith claims to have accomplished more than any other running back just before he notes that he may not be the greatest running back. Smith KNOWS that he did not affect defensives like Barry affected defensives. Smith KNOWS Sanders it's the greatest.
The clock doesn't start until the ball is touched by a player other than the kicker. I ran a stopwatch from the time the ball is first touched until the GB player recovered and it was 2.25 seconds. Since he is not allowed to advance it, the clock stops as soon as he has possession of the ball. They got it right and it didn't change the outcome of the game anyway. Plus, it went down as another incompletion for Favre on one of the worst days of his career in GB.😆
7:04 This is Barrys most unappreciated run. It doesn't generally make his top ten but it should. He literally slips thru a narrow corridor of 4 or 5 unblocked defenders about 5 yards downfield ... It also highlights his least appreciated talent. He had incredible acceleration and speed for the first 40 or 50 yds, as fast as any player I ever saw
The Packers and Brett Favre were the media darlings at that time. Refs tried to give Favre another chance at the end after an otherwise abysmal performance.
Lol at refs for putting :01 on the clock at the end. 😆😆😆 Also, Brett Favre with a cannon arm throwing well over 60 yards... from own GB 40 across the field into the DET end zone. 😳😳😳

Yeah, with that good a runner Reggie is neutered. If Green Bay hasn't tackled Barry in the first five yards , then it's probably because their chasing him. Barry in my mind is history's second best running back. I'll stick with Emmett Smith. Frankly the difference is small, puns aside because they were both small.
