Mr. Sandler's film spoke to so many people of so many ages - ie: myself, struggling with what was obvious at age 18. I saw this in a suburban multiplex 3 times, (including the night it opened, a week later than the city?). It was nearly empty! Middle America? What if your neighbor saw you leaving a showing! But in mid- town Manhattan, thank goodness, it was packed, both times. This film still resonates. It's an intimate portrait, focussed on the three leads. It superbly represents two very different types of gay men, (one who longs for intimacy), he believes that there can be intimacy & lasting monogomy b/t two men. The other, like so many men I know, who believe men are "wired" & "just know" that love & sex are two different things& act accordingly. I see that holding water when you are younger & I do feel all people should wait until @ age 30 to marry. Open relationships are a big theme among gay couples. Is it because society, (back then), had taught us that's the most we cld hope for? Thirty years later & post AIDS, it is so much easier to come out younger. It is now even "OK again?" to be more cavalier about health. I was grateful for this film when it came out, primarily because it portrayed people you might know. No stereotypes. I wanted to be "Zac" & was lucky to have that for 25 yrs., until I found out that my partner, who "married" me far too young, had been cheating & I didn't find out until his cheating escalated to "rampant". No matter. This film still holds its own! Bravo to Mr. Sandler & his fine trio of actors.
Provides more insight. Good interview. And what a great film. Kate Jackson was wonderful in it. She's such a good actress. Wish this film had led to more dramatic roles. Although I love Kate's humorous side in other roles, too! The complete actress!
