Sheene having finally sorted his suzuki with new Harris yokes gives Haslam a hard time on the factory Honda.
Pity Barrys bike didnt behave like this for the earlier match races ! I was down at the B'OL Dor at the time on my trusty gs 1000.

Sheene was such a smooth rider, closing up on the cornering but lacking that bit of power on the straight, he’s a much missed personality, like James Hunt, both were top quality.

people say Roberts was better... but considering Sheenes accidents..especially the 2nd when he obliterated his legs... its incredible he came back from them.. and still raced at the top.. great memories regardless who was your fave rider.. .. .. remember waiting outside his caravan at mallory in 76 aged 10 for an autograph.. but he was busy so i got Katayama's and dave potter instead..... great times

@team3383 2 года назад
I think you will find it was called Marketing. The more pictures you got taken the more you showed off your sponsors and the bigger the chance of being published (even in yr private home). Whereas nowadays pilots have organised sponsor and advertising days (they hate) but are obliged through contract to attend. Their days at the tracks are finely tuned and 'minuted' so they no longer have the time to smoke casual cigarettes (they don't smoke ... because they are athletes now) and hang around with spectators or the public in general. They have personal coaches for everything and PR teams. No wonder they have no time for casual "selfies". We are living the 21st century my friend.

@@tosgem Not sure he would have lasted an hour with a modern team. He was a great bloke, but he wouldn't have had the patience to put up with the way modern teams work. I remember in the 90's when pilots used to cross EU at full chat on big BMW's to get to the race tracks. Race on the wednesday, thursday, friday saturday & sunday and then ride home .... Thats now impossible and the teams wouldn't allow it either.
@tosgem

Well he never stopped riding did he, thanks to his school at Donington and nobody knows every inch of that track like Ron. Had the pleasure of spending a day with him at his home a few years back when I was a journalist. A lovely fella, and a nice family. Despite the fact he forgot we were coming, he treated myself and my colleague to lunch, offered us a spin at Donington on the back of his bike and even invited us to his family fireworks party that evening. A true gentleman and rightly called a legend of the track.

When Barry sheene lived in Charlwood, I was his milkman!! ! Every Saturday, cause his "manor house " was the last I'd deliver to go the village, I'd pop in and have a cuppa with his wife, Steph, whilst I cashed up... The leathers he was wearing when he came off at Daytona (doing 180 MPH) were hung in his pantry... it always reminded me of the scene from "silence of the lambs " where Hanibal Lector flayed the policeman whilst escaping... Ah grim... But...
