i think bob seger said something like this way back, but a big trait of michigan is you are who you are and that is good enough so long as you aren't faking it. if you pretend you are bigger then you really are everyone will shoot you down, but if you understand the reality of it, in this case 7.8 being really high, don't boast and don't blame anyone for anything but what it is, then you are a real. Desire to be the best but reality check of what you actually are is constantly in play. Basically you get bonus points culturally for being slightly humble, in simple terms.
