So glad you made this, I always see this clip popping up in suggestions, and I'm always like "Because of this one damn clip, people are going to put tons of soda in their old fashioneds!!!" I laughed heartily when it got to that part, and your reaction, "woahhh woah what was that?". Thats how I felt the first time I saw this clip, just "the hell is he doing!?". Good stuff, man!

I was in the bar at a classy restaurant in Napa and, having had bad experienced with watered-down Old Fashioneds of late, I asked the bartender how much water she added to Old Fashioneds. She reflexively answered "There's no fucking water in an Old Fashioned!" She was instantly aghast and embarrassed. She apologized profusely. I refused to accept her apology, saying that she had nothing to apologize for and that she spoke truth. I ended up having three (or maybe even four) of her Old Fashioneds. They were really good.

Geez, imagine the Old Fashioned entering your life thru an episode or scene of a T.V. show. It is Mad Men, so it could be worse, but still ...

To be fair in those days scotch and soda or whiskey and soda were ultimate and drank almost all day (aka more than one). So it's definitely era appropriate to have the seltzer. I agree not up to today's standards but not terrible

I never watched Mad Men but you are great.

Don jumping the bar is kind of the point of his character. It's not in there to make him look cool. He's showing off, like an ass. The people who idolize him as a role model miss the whole point of the show. I think it's the same thing with how he makes the Old Fashioned - he knows what's in it, seen bartenders do it, but doesn't actually KNOW how to make one. He improvises and gets close enough to the mark for him to get a buzz. Mad Men is a fantastic show because it doesn't hit you over the head with "messaging" or "signalling". The things that happen just inhabit the time and space and it's up to the audience to catch and interpret it. One of the scenes from the show that always sticks with me is Don's having a picnic on a blanket with his family somewhere off the side of the road. Maybe the edge of a park. Don throws away his empty beer can. They pick up their cooler and basket. Sally, his wife grabs the blanket, flinging off the paper plates, left over food, wrappings, and other trash, and they drive off.

That's not ablest, a blind man would do a terrible job of setting up a bar.
