Last month my favorite bartender told me she was under pressure to get five-star reviews on the bar that mentioned her by name. I'd never written a review on Yelp before, but of course I was happy to help. Still, what a world where they're dependent on customers to go out and wave the flag for them like that.

I love reviews because unlike our parents we can see what places to go or avoid. I prefer Foursquare because it makes you aware of policies some places have but don't disclose upfront. Also when traveling reviews are extremely useful when trying to pick out something to eat or a place to go.

"I don't even like positive reviews because the people reviewing aren't qualified to critique the food" That is the most pretentious thing I've ever heard. So regular customers can't comment on how good they thought the food was? Who the hell is your target market if it isn't the every day person that walks through your door. Only the highly trained super sensitive palette of a Michelin-star critic may grace your food with a favorable opinion? Give me a freaking break. lol.

I agreed with most things they said, but that really stuck out as obnoxious. Customers can judge whether they enjoy a place.

+mauricio krebs: What a "pro" knows or doesn't know about the restaurant business is irrelevant. If you are a customer, you have a right to post about your experience, good or bad. There may be objectively-misinformed or factually-incorrect reviews, but by and large, a customer always has a right to give their opinion. Saying "you don't have the right to criticize the food because you don't know enough" is one of the worst arguments you can give. If I buy a $150 meal and the steak I ordered is cold, the vegetables are practically frozen and the drinks are watery, then you're damn right I'm going to complain. Businesses/restaurant owners either need to step their game up or get left behind. Complaining about reviews belies the problem that half the time, they're trying to cover up their own issues and insecurities.

What a pretentious, complete douchebag. Does he hear himself? Does this person have friends? How often does he get punched in the face?

I prefer to see a bar for myself, and ask the locals about their favourite bar and check it out.

Fact of the matter is, most restaurants (at least in Canada) sell food that is bad quality. You pretty much have to go to pricey/fancy restaurants to get good quality food. If you go to chain restaurants, 90% of the time, the food is crap. The quality at bars is even worse, even if it's not part of a chain.

There needs to be codes on the receipts that you must have in order to review that particular establishment

Melissa how many people leave reviews on places they’ve never been to?
@withelisa
@withelisa 4 года назад
@@alexb5275 a lot. Google in particular asks folks who were in the vague vicinity to review, so a lot of confused older people will write, "0 stars, I didn't eat here"

Ok so I agree I am not a professional critic but I am a customer and I am qualified to speak to my own experience and if I have a valid criticism that when taken to the management is brushed off or ignored then that speaks to the culture of the establishment and that is sometimes something that needs to be broadcasted publicly to have addressed.

I love Yelp. I have found so many awesome places through it. I think it helps little mom and pop businesses for sure. If you have a brain you take the reviews with a grain of salt. It isn't gospel but I would say you can get a good feel for what to expect.

Hah - "not qualified". They're customers - of course they're qualified. Your job is to make *them* happy, not some fictional "qualified" customer. If someone requests a steak well done, either kick them out and make it known you only serve those with the best taste (some eg: nightclubs take this approach). If you don't do that, cook them the best damned well-done steak you can. Otherwise you have no business being in business.

A lot of customers are dumb. If you order a steak medium rare and complain that it was "pink inside" then you are not qualified to comment on the steak. If you order guacamole and complain that it "tasted like cilantro, which I hate" then you are also not qualified. If you never salt your food at home at any point in the process and complain that the food at a restaurant is "too salty", then you're not qualified.

I’m a Yelp elite and 95% of my review are 5 stars with good reviews. If you are doing your job, you get 5 stars. If it’s less than 5 then I present reasons why and it’s bot opinion but fact.

if that's true then you are a horrible food reviewer and your opinions don't matter much. your approach works for Uber rides as it's mostly a binary function. But food has many levels of quality and giving everyone the same rating doesn't help others decide. you have to know people want the stars to reflect the quality of the food in the restaurant, and then failing to provide adequate service will only lower the rating. service should never raise a food rating (even though it's nice) the food is the main star if you're eating a meal. so many beautiful restaurants with amazing service, but the food is very average and boring. guess what? that restaurant gets 2 or 3 stars. i don't go to a restaurant because I'm looking to have "server/waiter" time, they should be largely transparent and anticipate my needs with minimal effort on my part.

I rate a place by my wallet. If you suck, I'm never coming back and I won't be telling others nice things about ypur place. On the other hand, if you have good service and good product, and I really like the place....I will become a regular and everyone I know will be told about it.
