Absolutely. Bas and Ken both I've seen brag on other fighters talents. To be that caliber of an athlete and retain humility is rare. I doubt I could do it if in the same situation. I'll never have to worry about that though. My best and only fighting technique has kept me safe for over 50 years. Unfortunately it's not as good as it use to be. Mom is getting up there in age and alot of times she doesn't hear me scream for her.

Can we talk about how Bas didn't have to talk to the audience, he didn't have to learn Japanese and could've hired an interpreter, but he did it anyways to show his respect for his audience and the country as a whole. You just don't see that anymore.

@@VelhaGuardaTricolor zero ground game? Bas has more submission wins than he has KO wins lmao. And imagine Bas with the training and recovery methods we have now? He started MMA at 28 after his knees were already shot, fighting guys who were much bigger than him. In this day and age, Bas starts his career at 22 and trains at AKA where he can improve his wrestling (his biggest weakness in his career). He would also cut down to middleweight as his fighting weight of 210-215 pounds are similar to what guys like Paulo Costa and Marvin Vettori weigh during fight night. I imagine he would be like a shorter, less technical, but more powerful version of Adesanya but with a better ground and submission game.

Bas and Ken are arguably two of the best Pancrase fighters that both were successful in the early UFC. This fight at the time was incredibly important. Bas Rutten took shootfighting under Masakatsu Funaki but also was one of the early successful strikers in MMA. He used his Shotokan Karate background to prove the effectiveness of open hand strikes as well as a strong Muay Thai kickboxing background that gave him powerful low kicks and brutal knee strikes. He used this effectively for KO's or to beat up and pound fighters then finish with submissions. Ken was striking COMPETENT but grappling was his forte. At this point, Ken and Funaki had sparred with the Machado brothers against BJj and learned more Sambo submissions (particularly leglockd) from Gokor Chivichyan and learned from Kosen Judo students at the Kosen Judo academy to improve their submissions and ground game. Ken was also a very explosive wrestler from his freestyle wrestling days and learning some basic catch wrestling from Yoshiaki Fujiwara. This was considered a serious fight in Pancrase style shootfighting at the time. Arguably one of the best striker style kickboxers against arguably one of the best grapplers. Admittingly, even Ken Shamrock stated in a backstage Pride FC interview, that in this fight "Bas was still learning shootfighting" but it was a tense and exciting fight to watch when it first came out. Everyone wondering would Bas sprawl-and-brawl Ken and liver-shot him to a KO? Or would Ken wrestle Bas down to the ground and submit him? Still a great fight to watch.

Funacki means hands inside and on your own neck with your elbows vertically down your chest towards your feet. like the face Kevin makes in the movie home alone when he puts the aftershave on his face. It protects you from most submissions and back in these days when there weren't many TKOs by punching it was a safer tactic.
