On opening day of the 2019 European Championship it took a while for both Italy and France to shake off the cobwebs and begin working as a team. That delayed reaction gave us a highly unusual complete game where the run margin exceeded 10 runs. A rare, and outstanding, treat to be sure!
In the 4th inning three homeruns rang out in as many at bats, two to the same spot left, the other, off the bat of a lefty, to right. By inning's end the game was tight with Italy ahead by just a run.
After an hour-long rainstorm delayed the start of the 6th, slowly consistently, Italy extended their lead throughout the remainder of the game, often with the help of France's defensive line.
Still, Italy put up 14 earned runs on the day. Spreading the love across the lineup only LF Sebastiano Poma had more than one extra base hit on the day. With a homerun and a double, Poma finished the game with 4 runs off 6 hits and 5 RBIs.
