In this video I attempt to explain how to predict the outcome of breeding two Leopard Geckos together, what the terms heterozygous and homozygous mean, what a morph actually is, and much much more.

Hi Rebecca. I´m Mikel, a gecko lover from spain. When I saw this video for the first time, i really loved it. I would be interested in picking it up and translating it into Spanish. A lot of reptile lovers from Spain cannot understand english and it will be a nice document for the gecko world in spain. Waiting your answer, Mikel

Great video! Would love to see more on genetics. I will be looking through your videos. For as long as I have been in this hobby, I cannot believe I had not tried breeding Leopard geckos. I have had many as pets but never any desire to breed them since they were "too common". That changed recently. I have my first pair going right now. Female is ovulating. Hopefully the male gets the job done and she actually builds some eggs for me.

wonderful job I was really excited to see it come out. just going to comment and thank you for mentioning the ethics at the end! with the snows it is very widely discussed as tug x tug although incomplete dominant only produces tugs with no super form but mack x tug has a super form as does gem x tug so breeders pair them and if the offspring are from a tug x gem or mack x gem (using gem and tug snows interchangeably) the offspring can produce the super snow so many breeders then label them as mack offspring and it gets way to confusing!
@AmazingPlanet_Channel
@AmazingPlanet_Channel 8 лет назад
+HandsomeHerps You know your stuff. When you consider all this about the tugs and macks, its make you wonder just exactly how these are genetically similar, and how they are linked. I can't wait until we final have the leopard gecko genetics sequenced and we can really have a better understanding. _Mic(FunWithLife)
@PAPermacultureExotics
@PAPermacultureExotics 8 лет назад
+Fun with Life Oh it really does I assume the difference in the snows goes back to where the origins of the morph was from like if tug snows came from Pakistan and mack Iraq (I know these were both discovered through breeders and not wild ) I say this a lot but I question the fact that leopard geckos even have subspecies like the facsiolotus because they just come from different regions and have a slightly diffrent build and coloration yet we can breed them and create fertile offspring? This may all sound a little unfounded as it is more my speculation. yet in captivity we produce so many different homozygotes i just wonder if these are more like another version of the dominant wild type trait or better yet a insanely inbred polygenic trait making these subspecies have slightly different appearances. I mean considering that Afghans come from Afghanistan and have a inbred heritage due to the reason of their locality.
@AmazingPlanet_Channel
@AmazingPlanet_Channel 8 лет назад
+HandsomeHerps You're right, there is a lot of 'cloudy' veiled over the leopard gecko genetics for a number of reasons. Many breeders did not document their work appropriately for one. Another thing is that animal classification is not perfect. Through the process of classification, subspecies, etc.. are established by the scientific community. Often, as time goes on, some of these classifications are challenged and sometimes changed. This is the nature of science in general. We are always getting a better understanding of the things we already know exist. In regards to locality, there is definitely a time in history where the interactions between these members of a species would cease to exist, or only happen on very rare occasions. Basically what has happened is polygenic breeding groups are formed in the wild. Due to things such as human activity, changing environments, etc.. over the years leopard geckos have become spread out and isolated in these localities. We may find that some localities are more related than others, making them more compatible. We will have to wait for genetics sequencing to know for sure. Through breeding we can only use outcomes to hypothesize.

I've been trying to do so much research about morphs and breeding. This video definitely helps but as you said it only scratches the surface. My main concern with breeding is not breeding the correct morphs/genes together and one or some of the babies develop the Enigma Syndrome. When I try to do research on how to avoid that possibility, literally nothing comes up! I had seen your other video that covered the topic of Enigma Syndrome and how it happens and I guess I'm still confused. I suppose what I'm wondering is, is it mostly the Geckos that are HET that carry the syndrome Gene? If I breed Geckos that are AA and aa making the babies be Aa is that going to chance the babies developing this syndrome. I don't plan to try breeding for another 2 or 3 years, but this idea is still a consideration and I want to be as informed as I can
