I've played RPG's for decades but I find Roll20 about as user friendly a astrophysics, this was the first video I've seen that actually made sense to my peanut sized brain. Baby steps for me... cheers fella!
A solid piece of work. Most online tutorials focus on map-combat that is vital to D&D, but not helpful in CoC. I will use this video as part of my pre-class homework for new Keepers.

Absolute gem of a find this as it's the first reference anyone's made in the uploads I've watched to music and how to use and select etc. Also the holding and dragging of files (I know that's simple but only when you know how) as I've seen it happen in tutorials but they never explained how they were grabbing files to move them to various folders. Really helpful, well paced introduction to playing online. You've created some amazing Roll20 backgrounds and other assets in your videos. I'd love to see how you build some of these things.
@@RPGNook I'm playing with GIMP and Krita and running through tutorials. I can make older paper and vintage photos. The thing I'm struggling with is location maps.
@@SimonSedgwick For building blueprints i use Illustrator most of the time, but it depends on the style you want to replicate. There are some building/house design programs out there to keep things simple, afterwards the jpeg can be manipulated. For city maps, i use alot of older maps found online. www.oldmapsonline.org If there is a specific location you are interested in let me know and i'll see if i can do a tutorial on how to create it.
@@RPGNook I'll have a look at Inkscape then, so how you tackle a layout in Illustrator would be helpful. For what I want to build is something akin to Blackwater Creeks pg64 Temple of Hope. Street with some vehicles and a warehouse with a few rooms. It's for a scenario I'm writing and not replicating published material. So long and short of it, any pointers to techniques you've found useful for asset/map building.
Sure thats something i can do, the biggest benefits of r20 over Fantasy Grounds i would say are its flexibility and browser based client, larger pool of players etc. Where FGs is more polished and structured. If you are using preexisting scenarios FG might be better, but R20 is releasing more and more each day and Its price points are far lower.
Backward... Hmm... not on roll20, you'd need to use a program to do it. I think DaVinici Resolve will do it. its free to download. Should be simple enough. Might be an easier progarm i'm unaware of that could do it tho.
Very good video, thank you very much! Two things are not clear to me: how do you throw an ability with a bonus or penalty automatically and how do you add the bonus to the damage of melee attacks? Does it add up automatically?
Hey there, you click the left hand button next to the ability you wish to roll, the purple button, and it shows you the results. i go what that result means at 14:30ish The bonus damage for an impaling hit has to be manually done, unfortunately the sheet doesn't do that math for you. If you mouse over any result you will see that maths from the roll and you can quickly work out the max damage from there.
Great guide mate and some ideas thrown in too. I'm trying to understand the best way to do player character sheets fro CoC in R20 - is it possible to upload your own player character sheets into a scenario? Like the ones from Chaosium or the dhole's house for example? If yes, would they 'interact' with the software e.g. dice rolls?
unfortunately not, it would be a great idea but they have never implemented it despite constant requests. So its good old fashion manual transfer, the ingame sheets can be move between games tho. So once its on there you can move it about easy enough and copy and pasting the bios/text it doesn't take too long to copy it over.
@@RPGNook Thanks for the quick response, that’s a shame it’s not possible, I do like the more aesthetically pleasing look of some of the others. I guess we could use our own 3rd party character sheets in addition to the in-game ones, with the in-games ones being used to control token and line of sight etc and the 3rd party ones effectively used as a reference outside roll 20. Of course, we would be adding extra work updating 2 sheets but if players really prefer it, it wouldn’t be too onerous. I’ll discuss it with my players.
