hi Corporal Kelly well I was the one that suggested you to do a video on how to use a compass you said you stayed clear of this yes I know there are other channel's doing this but here's why I asked you to do this one people may not see the other channel's and this is a inportant matter and I like how you teach you don't make thing complicate no big o shits you keep it simple and strate forward easy to under stand please don't stear clear of thing because you and you'r channel do make a different in people life after all what is you'r channel about in the first place helping so one injoy the out doors and most of all helping people that got in a fix survive an out doors situation so no don't stsy clear of thing's you're teaching just might save some one's life out in the Forrest etc. isn't a joke when something go's from bad to worst all this is why I asked you to do this forget the other channel because you've heared time again from us you do make a different ok I SALUTE you Corporal Shawn Kelly C😎😎L

I was a Sea Cadet growing up in Central Ontario Canada. I took an orienteering course as part of the cadet training program but I never had the information really click. I watched this video and all the pieces of that knowledge came back to me and clicked together in my brain with satisfying clarity. Thank you for creating it, sometimes it's not the material but the right instructor that achieves success for different people. Your class was excellent for me.

Corporal...just a bit of feedback for you: Your teaching is precise, very clear, and very informative...and in a manner that can make a very novice beginner or even a hardened pro understand and pick up on easily and quickly. Your manner of teaching also makes it VERY easy to retain and apply. Keep up the GREAT work....And yes, by all means, keep these tutorial videos coming...they are second to none. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with others, especially those who have a difficult time grasping from other attempted teachings. YOU definitely have a professional way and skill to clearing up sometimes otherwise confusing instructions. SEMPER FI !!!

I heartily agree. I was in the Marines; and I love the very straight, simple and to the point way that you lay things out... with just enough back story and insider insights to make it really interesting, and fun to watch! I watch other channels; but often the camerawork isn't that good, or they haven't really researched what they are talking about. The fact that you were in the Marines and have them as a resource is MAJOR, in my opinion.

Agreed. In that aspect it reminds me of when I took my course to become an EMT-B. Our instructor was very clear on what we needed to know vs. what they "had" to teach by NYS law and so that we could give the answers that were looked for on the State tests. That distinction allowed us to know what we needed for the field and for practical use as opposed to what was fluff and extraneous info that someone else said we "had" to know. When I have passed on my knowledge to others (part of the now, sadly, defunct EMT Oath) I have tried to use the same 'This is what you do and this is why' format. PLEASE keep up the great work!

I appreciate your efforts in breaking things down so guys like me can understand what you're teaching. Teaching is not for everyone. Most of the time people skip important steps or forget a series of steps altogether. Then the student gets lost-- if you'll excuse the pun-- and finally gets frustrated. When there's no frustration it's a good learning experience, especially when you take what you learned and apply them in the field. What I'm trying to say is-- you're a good teacher.

I am a Master Maine Guide and have been tromping in the woods and mountains all my life, utilizing a map and compass to 'stay found', so to speak. I have read numerous books, seen seminars and youtube videos on the subject and many of those resources make things too complex for novice navigators. You either learn it fully or you may find yourself in a lost type of situation, confused and not knowing what to do next. I have seen it firsthand. There was nothing confusing about this video. I feel that even novice navigators would find this information clear, concise, and would be able to freely roam the woods with confidence. I love the idea of keeping the map out of this video, to allow people to learn the compass skills first, build confidence, and gain experience before introducing the map. The map is what usually stumps people, mostly in dealing with declination. Keep up the good work, and I am looking forward to your map video. Cheers from Maine.

I love your videos. They're clear, and concise. I only wish I'd heard your explanations when at school (in UK), instead of the useless waffle we were taught. It even confused my mother when she heard what the teacher had taught us, and she was a qualified geography teacher herself! My best memory was (many years ago) us finding a group of lost army cadets on our land very late one rainy night, and our mother holding an easy learn lesson on map reading in the dark that got them back on their correct, albeit soggy way. 😆 Sometimes it's not what you teach, it's how you teach it, and you teach it really well.

Corporal, you have a way of explaining things that just sinks in for some of us better than the ways of others. There's no one teaching method that's right for every person, which is why I'm glad there are different videos with different ways of handling this information. Yours works for me, Coalcracker Bushcraft's might work for someone else, Canterbury a third, and so on. Some of it will overlap, too, but that's not a completely bad thing imho. Sometimes it sticks better if a lesson is presented in more than one way, by more than one person.

Thanks a lot. I would appreciate seeing more and detailed use of combined tools (here: compass, waypoint marking, ranger beads) in praxis. There's a lot of theoretical knowledge available in books and videos, but the practical use is underrepresented. For me the use of waypoint markings during foraging or searching for water was a really good advice. Please more. Best greetings from Hamburg, Germany.

You did a great job of explaining land nav. I had to do a ton of it while I was in the corp it is a lot of fun.

whatever happened to kids going into Boy Scouts and learning a lot of this stuff like I did when I became an eagle scout and was a cub leader.👍

It was the Boy Scouts that changed, not boys.

Unfortunately too many parents think their precious little snowflake is too fragile for anything remotely 'military' these days. They'd rather brainwash them about 'inclusivity' or 'how to find a safe space when encountering a microaggresive trigger'.

My BSA troop had some sorry leaders that didn’t teach much. I’ve learned more in 3-4 episodes here in a couple of hours than they taught us in 2 years...

This is the best video I’ve seen on this subject for beginners. Others I’ve seen and read may start simple but then make a leap and start talking talking about things that they haven’t defined yet and it gets confusing. Thanks for the video; definitely wasn’t a waste of time!

Great video on basics of land nav. I have not used this info since 1977 end of Army tour of 10 yrs . Brings back lots of memories. Nostalgic trip down memory lane. Thanks for sharing.
