I'm 63 years old and healthy, cashing out in California and headed to Arkansas, wanting my Sport license and build a Zenith 701 CH STOL. This video was great with all the bases covered that I have been researching. You simplified it great, Thanks.

Hola Hermano ,Explanations was very helpful in the beginning I didn’t understand the difference between light sports and recreational 103 but now I know the difference, light-sports license have more Benefits that recreational 103 , I do appreciate your content, thank you brother

Love flying my schools light sport and for me i have no interest in flying at night etc just pottering around and going to the odd restaurant for lunch with the missus it's perfect.

I enjoyed your explanation of light sport, and I read the comments. I am 76 years old learning to fly for the first time (zero previous experience) First when people believe that it takes ____ hours to learn to fly sport pilot or private pilot, that is not a good way to access being an accomplished pilot. While flying is enjoyable (fun) it is not to be taken lightly. Flying is a hobby that takes real concentration and focus, this is serious stuff. You cannot tell someone that in 20 hours of flight training they will be proficient enough to be pilot in command of an airplane any airplane. Having had some time behind the wheel of a 1946 Ercoupe (my newly purchased airplane) I soon realized it's not about hours it's about being an accomplished pilot. You as a pilot don't want to be flying around with your grandchildren in the plane and not be a accomplished pilot. I think only the student pilot and his instructor or instructors will be able to determine that. Don't rush the time to license, let it come to you. Work hard, study hard, and fly often, be a safe pilot regardless of the hours it takes... End of speech.... 🛸

This is very helpful. I had a friend, who was also my dentist, that had a homebuilt Longeasy. He had heart issues, and I remember him talking about flying on a light sport license instead of a private pilot license bc of his heart problems. Interesting that perhaps he shouldn't have been flying regardless. He has since passed away from a heart attack, though in practice I don't believe he flew at all as he got older. I only hope his young son too up the cause. That Longeasy is a pretty amazing plane.

Your video is perfect timing for me. In anticipation of finally getting a pilots license I went ahead to obtain my 3rd class medical. The sleep apnea issue was a huge hurdle to find out that my 2 years mouth appliance wasn't doing its job properly so now I'm a new CPAP patient. The medical forms and the FAA medical dept. stumbled with me to get reporting in to reflect CPAP and apnea compliance. In exasperation I'd much rather just be a sport pilot and will let my 3rd class medical expire. Here is something I'd like to hear you address: CFI push the private pilot and are unaware of the MOSAIC rules that are about to come to light. When I am inquiring or shopping for a CFI to help me obtain a sport pilot certificate I get a lot of push back, seems that the majority of CFI's are only wanting to teach for private pilot. It isn't just push back, its an attitude. (So I'm about to travel to FL to take an accelerated program that focuses on sport pilot). Have you seen the MOSAIC proposals? It is pretty exciting and you would think that CFI's would be on the edge of their seats preparing to amp up the sport pilot programs and prepare for the multitude of "endorsements" that they could provide for sport pilots. It seems to me to be a business opportunity on the verge of blossoming.

There are CFI’s around central Florida that focus on sport pilot, but it can be a challenge, keep at it!

If I were you, I'd still go for private pilot and then operate under Basic Med. I wish I could do that, but I don't have a 3rd class medical yet and am not sure I would be successful at getting one at this time. The catch with Basic Med is you have to have gotten a 3rd class medical atleast once... The reason I'd still go for private is I've run into issues already with some airports near me having LSA's that they rent, but they don't rent to Sport Pilots, only Private :/. So for now I am stuck driving over an hour to the one airport that has a flight school for Sport Pilots, and have aircraft I can continue to rent post certification. I'm doing Sport training right now, but I would rather be Private and be able to fly Sport, than be Sport and be able to ONLY fly Sport.

@@ericthemantis I know nothing of the rental market for LSA's and you may be right. The risk with going to get a third class is if it is denied you are no longer eligible to fly a LSA under the driver license portion. Good luck.

I take it max weight for light sport is maximum TAKEOFF weight, fully loaded . . . I was part owner of a Citabria a long time ago, and i am guessing that would not qualify as Light Sport. Too bad that plane or Cessna 152, etc would not qualify, coz I think they are safer and easier to fly than some of the newer "light sport" planes, which I understand can be a little squirrelly, lousy ground handling, poor crosswind capabilities, etc.

Most Citabrias I know of are not LSA, I agree a 152 would make a great LSA if you could shave off about 300 pounds, with a lighter engine, wood prop, less fuel, no steam gauges, etc...

Being the cheap B&#$% that I am decided to go for fly training for LSA on my local school that had a cub, after all was cheaper to rent than the Cherokees available for the private ticket. I had read about ground loop risks and the sort but thought "how hard can it be" 60 hours in, after soloing at 25 hours and I failed the check ride doing S turns, I was already past my budgeted 50 hours and decided it had gotten too stressful, not to mention that it became obvious that I couldn't afford the hobby long term so I quit. I do cherish the memory of soloing and has been one of the coolest things I have done, but would advise anyone to not to take the "cheaper route" because it hardly ever ends up costing less. Last thing I heard some young instructor trashed the old cub high speed taxing when the student slammed on the breaks 😞

Just recently new (2023-24) Canadian regulations have been proposed that invalidate any previously certified light aircraft (such as these models) that were previously allowed for use for people with less than a Private Pilot licence and aviation medical.
