Basic Nikon SB-800 Speedlight Flash Overview

I haven't used this flash in may years. at full 1:1 power almost any flash will make a "pop" sound.

Do you have the diffuser attached to the flash unit?

I don't use this equipment anymore and haven't looked at this video in years. I'm going to assume I was talking about some type of auto power mode in the flash. In that case, the flash probably needs to know the camera settings so that it can estimate a "correct" exposure when adding fill light to the scene. So yeah, if for some reason the flash isn't seeing the camera change aperture then you's want to adjust that manually if possible (I don't recall). The flash should automatically change and show what the camera setting are. I'm not sure why you'd need to do it manually. If you are using the flash in some type of manual power mode it doesn't matter. Use the flash at whatever power level you want in that case.

I haven't used this flash in a very long time. I don't recall the flash doing multiple pre-flashes. Usually flash like this do a single burst so that they can properly measure the scene. The flash could be set manually if you don't want a preflash. It also looks like there are two auto modes, one might work better for you. The manual starts talking about them on page 36. Nikon has the manual available online in case you don't have a copy of it: cdn-10.nikon-cdn.com/pdf/manuals/Speedlights/SB-800.pdf If the camera and/or flash are not going off that could be related to the camera not achieving focus in an autofocus situation. Or if the flash itself isn't firing it's been used to quickly after the last burst, the batteries need replaced, or it's got some type of mechanical problem. Best of luck!

@@ScottJWaldron now in 2023, what do you recommend sb-800 or maybe sb-700?

@@mr_pao6711 It's been years since I've used any of this stuff. Buy whatever is within your budget. It looks like the sb-700 is still sold new. The sb-800 has long been discontinued, but maybe a good deal would be worth checking out.

I don't recall, but likely a Nikon D7000 or D3200. I might have had a D7100 instead at the time as well.

Because it looks like D7100, but i don't know how you put that plastic into the LCD? there is no place for that. Thank you, nice review btw!

Oh, I thought you meant the camera filming the video. The one in the video is a D600.

Nothing I can do about a nearly 10 year old video. There is a playback speed feature on RU-vid that you can use.
