I laughed out load when you said that you can "fire this flash until it literally bows up". I'm dying!! Thomas, that has to be the best sound bite for any camera equipment I've ever heard. Well done sir!

Excellent overview of the SB800. I am a crime scene photographer and aviation photography enthusiast. Although I have some formal training, I have yet to fully explore the potential of the SB-800s that I own. This video will help me buckle down and improve my weak areas with flash photography.

Thank you for your kind comment! I am very happy that I inspired you to use more flash / make the most out of it. I myself love the creative and technical aspects that flash photography offer. Just get in touch if I can help you out. Thanks again!

I use the SB800's (3) and the SB900's (3) with my Z8. And, I'm really pleased with the outcome of these two older flashes. Saves me a lot of money. What else is great most of all my older Accessories works with the Z8 so far, all the way back to my 10 pin Infrared remote which is about 40 yrs old are more and wired ones too. Haven't had a chance to try my SU and Radio Poppers remote control yet but i feel like they work also with the Z8.

Really excellent review - thanks for posting this. And, as someone who speaks English natively, I have to say that your spoken English is really excellent 🙂. Following your review, I've just bought an SB-800 to go with my Nikon F5 so I'm looking forward to seeing how the results come out when I get the film developed.

Great appraisal of this old workhorse that I bought with my D750. I like to understand better regarding all the functionalities it offers. Your review showed me that you know and care about the details. I did look for it because I consider to add another one for certain scenarios (added a used D850 2 years ago) and for convenience reason I tend to prefer the same model but I was looking for confirmation that the SB800 is still "very good" and I'm glad that I got it!
@ThomasEisl.Photography

Many thanks for the kind feedback! I would definitely recommend this unit, especially if you already got one - as you've said, better stick with one type of equipment! Best wishes!

Thanks for the kind words! I'm also chasing SB-800s. Better have some in reserve in case one fails (which never happened with SB800s I own so far).

I have one but never used it because of the high variable ASO that most digital cameras have . I agree it is a good flash. 🇨🇦

Hi Thomas, I am not entirely sure SB-800 is the one for most users. I have been doing some comparison with SB-600 and from I found out SB-600 can do must of the same things the SB-800 can. Of course if you need the commander mode, beefier flash, and the extended zoom range then SB-800 is for you but for most users SB-600 does the job. Another thing is that since both are not produced anymore you have to find a used one and since the SB-800 is the pro version of SB-600 you are not likely to find one in excellent or mint condition but since the SB-600 is the consumer grade version of the SB-600 there are many used ones around in mint condition for half the price of a banged up SB-800. An alternative which can be found in mint condition is the SB-700 but if you want to use it on SLR's besides the D6 then SB-700 is not your choice.
@ThomasEisl.Photography
@ThomasEisl.Photography Год назад
Hey Michael! Thank you for your comment and elaborating on the viability of the SB-600 and the SB-700. You are right that many SB-800s are pretty banged up and considerably pricier. The SB-600 is a very good "budget option", you are right!

I have just got an F5 from a Camera Club Friend and the SB-800 -- but HOW can you mount it on a HASSELBLAD 500CM - NO Hot-Shoe or electronics ? - Do you have to use the extension cord not included in the set ? I have a Hasselblad 500CM
@ThomasEisl.Photography
@ThomasEisl.Photography 8 месяцев назад
Hello Pete! I use the SB800 on a hot shoe adapter which takes a sync chord (connected to the Hasselbad). Then I can either set the output manually or use the built-in light meter of the flash. Works really well!

can't find any detailed info how it will works in other cameras, like Fuji X-T3 and whether it supports high-speed sync there or not
@ThomasEisl.Photography
@ThomasEisl.Photography Год назад
Hey John! High speed sync is not possible. Also, the flash cannot communicate with third party bodies regarding exposure data - but it does not have to. The flash has a separate exposure metering cell so you only have to set the parameters in the flash and it will work with every camera ever built. Hope this helps!

Not sure where you are getting your information, but the NIKON Z camera system DOES NOT HAVE CLS.
@ThomasEisl.Photography
@ThomasEisl.Photography 2 года назад
Nikon Z cameras support CLS system compatible flashss and I got this information from one of the many Nikon School Germany courses. Also take a look at this: www.zsystemuser.com/accessories/z-accessories/nikon-flash-for-z-cameras.html

@@ThomasEisl.Photography Please read page 293 of you manual: Wireless Flash Options Adjust settings for simultaneous wireless control of multiple remote flash units. This option is available only when an SB-5000 or SB-500 flash unit or a WR-R10 wireless remote controller is mounted on the camera. There is no CLS compatibility with this system. I decided to stay with my existing equipment ...10 flash and strobe units, most controllable via CLS AND YN622. My 3 600ws studio strobes are manual and 6 years old, but via the YN622 they work in HSS as well, right up to 1/8000th. As far as the higher and cleaner quality of the Z cameras, I invested instead, in the Topaz system and am satisfied with that. To me, Nikon can go suck a sewer pipe for abandoning the millions of formerly loyal supporters whose equipment is no longer compatible with their new cameras. If and when ai upgrade it will not be with Nikon.
@ThomasEisl.Photography
@ThomasEisl.Photography 2 года назад
@@jjaylad Oh I think we are on the same page completely. I was talking about on-camera flash compatibility, not the Wireless CLS functionality on Z cameras. Regarding DSLR vs. Mirrorless, I would never state that Mirrorless is superior, for quite the same reasons you've stated. Having tried the Z7II for some time, I could not really see a benefit in terms of better image quality, but found it to be worse in terms of user experience. And yes, although I did not state that in this short video, the flash metering seems to be no better, maybe even a bit worse than on the DSLRs. I'm in camp DSLR TBH
@jjaylad
@jjaylad 2 года назад
@@ThomasEisl.PhotographyI had interpreted your vid as implying the Z system supported CLS. Thanks for clarifying that wasn't what you meant. Happy photography!
