When walking on or near the line we must, where possible, be in a position of safety. Ideally walk along a safe walking route. If none are available, walk in the direction of oncoming trains in the cess, 4 foot or 10 foot. Not the 6 foot.
We must also look up every 3 - 5 seconds to check for approaching trains.
When a train approaches take the correct action:
- Be in or move to a position of safety
- Raise one arm to acknowledge train warning.
Additionally, check the train as it passes for any unsafe conditions that could mean we must make an emergency call to the signaller. These could include:
- Red lights/flashing lights on the front of the train
- Long continual blasts on the high tone
- Driver/conductor displaying arm horizontally or red flag
- Doors open
- Hot axles
- Fires
- Insecure loads
- No lights illuminated on rear of train
Note - Only those who have appropriate competencies and qualifications are to enter railway infrastructure in line with their duties. This video and instructions does not give you that competency or qualification.
