A few people have asked what gets connected to the different connectors on a relay.
Well, since I had an idea, but wasnt 100% sure, I did some reading and decided to do a quick vid.
I hope it helps.
AH
p.s. double check to make sure
;)
P.S. for those that are wondering where I got the support info for this, check out these links...

The 5-pin relay that you are referring to has both a Normally Open (N.O.) and Normally Closed (N.C.) contacts. These are know as N.O. (87) and N.C. (87a).

@404-e5b
@404-e5b 9 лет назад
***** HHO is oxyhydrogen. You can generate oxyhydrogen via electrolysis and use it as an alternate fuel source in some situations. Anyway, to simplify it, replace where he says HHO and put a light bulb or fan.

Good video well explained. I don't know what HHO is but its the same as device/accessory. FYI: Lots of videos about wiring relay connections vary in two ways. Keep in mind that 80 & 37 could be reversed hook-up and 85 & 87 could be reversed hook-up too. IE: 87 could go to positive battery and 30 could go to the HHO cell/device....86 could go to ground and 85 to the switch.

If you don’t understand how something works yourself you probably shouldn’t do a tutorial video on it.its a good try but you might end up making somebody more confused and may cause more harm than good.especially if you don’t understand basic electrical.electricity is harmful to the human body and can burn up/blow up things.if you don’t get shocked you might just have that battery or cell blow up in your face.if anyone is watching this and trying to hook up something based on this tutorial,please please please for your safety do not rely on this one.their are plenty of other resources you can use to get your job done.experienced answers are much more productive than the” im learning with you” answers

there are Relays which have pin 87a and 87. 87a is the exit line when 85 & 86 is not active. means 30 runs through 87a. if 85 & 86 activate the Relay then 30 runs through 87. 87a is the exit line 1 87 is the exit line 2 exit line 1 is active when relay switch is powerless (85 & 86) have no flow. exit line 2 active when relay switch have power (85 & 86) have flow.

YES! Exactly what I was talking about on the last vid. For some reason in your last install vid I thought you had hooked the switch up between the positve terminal on the battery and the #30 on the relay, which could kill the switch. Hey, I have found the "Add-a-Circuit" at my local Auto Parts to be GREAT! They plug right into your fuse box, and have a wire lead that you can wire to the switch then the #86. Simply plug the existing 10A fuse back into it, and WALLAH! Use ACCESSORY line & fuse

The fifth connector or terminal on a relay buddy (track 2:29), is the "Normally-Close" terminal of terminal-87, means while the switch on your diagram is OFF, then its connected or closed-in at that fifth terminal or the center terminal which is also called the 87-A, or simply "Normally-Close".

It's such a hodge-podge, this old numbering system: pretty much makes no sense. I am not usually a EuroNorm fan, but EN 50005 applies numbering that makes more sense PLUS... coil gets designated A1 and A2 - can't miss it.
@johnnybraun77
@johnnybraun77 15 лет назад
The fourth post (87) is "normally open" and the fifth post (87A) is "normally closed". Meaning that 87 will be "off" until you energize the coil (85 and 86 posts) and 87A will always be "on" until you energize the coil.

I have a comment in that I too run fused power to post 30 and post 87 goes to my device. What I do differently, is I run a jump wire from 30 to 86. So instead of having a hot wire at my dash and running to post 87 I run a ground wire from post 86 to a toggle switch at my dash where it's grounded on the other side of the toggle switch. This way if there's a short in the wire running from the relay to the dash the only thing that will happen is that the device will turn on through the relay. It also saves half the distance of wire needed to run from the relay and back to the relay.

The relays with the 5th connector is like a single pole double pole switch. The other terminal is a normally closed position and when activated will shut off when the other one turns on. They are very handy if you want power sources to a load from two different power sources or if you want power applied to one load and switched to a second load when activated. OR if you want something on all the time and shut off when activated (usually safety circuits)the relay is just a mechanical switch
@zmaness79
@zmaness79 5 лет назад
The 5th contact is 87A. When there is no power on the switch circuit, the voltage from the battery is output through that pin. When you apply voltage across the switch circuit, the voltage from the battery is output through pin 87

Have left dozens of comments on these wiring videos, NOBODY has responded to my dilemma which is: The schematic embossed onto the relay cover shows 85, 86, 87, & 30. Simple, right? Nope. On my relay the embossed schematic is the same as you and everybody else shows in their diagrams. However, the 1/4" spade terminals are numbered 85, 86, 87, & 87a. What??? Why can't these engineers be consistent? Is the 87a spade terminal the same as the 30 shown on the embossed schematic? Does anybody out there actually know the answer to this question?

I am a semi retired electronic tech.. I have a few cars that I have to keep going. This is one of the few sites that give common sense explanation of the workings of this standard spdt relay.. if I understand this power 12 volts is on 30 which is useless until the relay is grounded by the computer.. I think that initially the fuel pump on Ford 150 circa 1999 is primed and controlled by this pin. is that true.. also would it be ok to post a in-depth troubleshooting I am working out on my 99 expy. I don't want to and refuse to just throw parts at a truck just because I was too lazy to understand a circuit.

maybe is off topic but I have a truck that uses 24v battery and a circuit to cut power that we send via a avl (automotive vehicle locator) , we succeded to make a circuit for a 12v battery car, what we wonder if we use a 24v relay 1.-does the circuit and wiring of cables has to be the same? 2.-the battery are 60 amps, and the relay that we want to use is 30 amps is this ok, sorry for my english

87a is a constant on till 87 is made. Then it is off. I use it to run a switchback LED. 87a is for the white LED and then 87 is for the Amber/Red LED. In turn it alternates from white to color as needed.

Also I have run across some 5 Pin relays that had 2x "87" pins, that are not 87 and 87a. When I metered them they were both 87 terminals. I guess like for running headlights from the same electrical connection but different terminals. This is another case why its important to know how to use your VOM/DVM.

5th connector: - 87a live by default ... a grounded LED on it would stay on all the time, unless the Relay is activated, then it would go off as 87 becomes the new current path in the high circuit. - or a second 87 that you can use to power up 2 items like 2 headlights High Beams

The 5th in the center /for a relay with 5 connectors is for will say 3 way switch / you could hook that up to your reverse light wire when you put vehicle in reverse will activate relay from that point. Without flipping other switch to activate whatever you have on that relay.

The 87a pin on these relays can, in simple terms, be connected to a load (lamp etc) that should be operational normally but is turned off when the switch is thrown to the ON position... as opposed to pin 87 which becomes energised when the switch is thrown on ! Like a 2-way switch in effect. My hydrogen cell is powered from my car ignition circuit for safety, which powers the engines oil pressure lamp...but the system only operates when my oil-pressure light goes OFF. (engine running and pressure ok) Now do you guys get it ?

Ran out of characters. the terminals are usually called 87 and 87a a being the normally closed. Polarity is not a problem on 87, 87a to 30. SOMETIMES a relay has a built in anti surge diode on the activating coil to protect computers and solid state devices so polarity IS essential on them. So 87(a) or 30 can be the hot lead, its a mechanical switch and it makes no difference. I see computer input circuits that are "backward" from normal because the computer is looking for a ground input.

To answer the question in the video, the fifth connector on a relay is just another output in parallel to 87 that would go to the HHO system. it is located in the center of all the other connectors. I am talking about aftermarket relays as each auto manufacture has there own design and pinout.
@razuuk004
@razuuk004 12 лет назад
the 5th connector is 87A and here is how it works. when the relay in not magnetically energized, the 30 and 87A are connected. when the relay is energized, the 30 and 87 are connected. you can use it in multiple functions like powering up 2 different loads or sending positive to a wire when energized and ground when not,etc etc etc.
