yay!! I just made my first pair of socks thanks to your great tutorials. So clear and i have been knitting for 60 years (my Nana showed me when i was six but it took a couple of years to get the hang of it) Thank you so much
I know it’s been awhile since you put this out but YOU made it possible for me to knit socks. I worked 11 different tutorials that ended up in frustration and wasted yarn. This is the BEST ever, thank you 💕
So far, this is my FAVORITE version of heel turn!!! Many thanks, Enjoying your personality and the clarity of teaching. I also enjoy the Padding factor of heel..That is alternating a knit stitch and slip stitch for a thicker heel. Very attractive looking and professional. Thank you also for the sock reference book that you refer to for guidance! 🙏🏻🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🧶🧶👍🏻
You are magic , I have made three pairs of socks guided by your video , thought that I had written it all down but can’t read my own writing. You are the best thank goodness I found you again.🎉🎉
Thank you very much for this series. I am self taught and struggled to get the heel knitted correctly. Your videos have explained the mysteries, I can now make a pretty sock. I was stuck on picking up the stitches and making the gusset, but now thanks to you I get it. Wonderful, knitting is fun again.
Enjoyed watching this video. You are a good teacher. I’m on a sock knitting kick presently after not knitting socks for quite a few years. I am a very old lady who loves to knit. Knitted my first pair of socks (Argyle) when I was a Freshman in High School. Everything I was a little insecure about after such a long time, is just fine now. Thank you for your good directions. It was a pleasure to watch and listen. Good wishes to you. Pat Dunning from near Cincinnati, Ohio.
Best tutorial ever on knitting socks! A lot of people assume we know what the heck they're talking about... you have explained to understand! Thanks so much,, and you're super chill😎
I have watched many videos and this is my first sock that I am making so I have needed to watch videos to show how to do this. I just want to say your videos are very good! Very helpful. I can see well how to do it. Thank you!!!
This five years ago posted video came to my recommendations last week and I watched all the three part of this tutorial. And thankyou for making my knitting journey so easy. I made a pair of socks for myself without any mistake after following your method. Feeling so confident. Thanks again. Sending love from Mumbai
Thank you so, so much for this tutorial! I've only ever been able to do toe up vanilla socks with fleegle heels and have always wanted to be able to do contrasting heels and this way has made it perfect! One very grateful new subscriber here🙌💕
I would have to agree with the handful of comments I just read. When it comes to heels your tutorials are the best. I knit Christmas stockings and I have not done one for four years. I really had to challenge my aging brain, lol, so thank you very very much. Wish I had found yours first.
Jana, perfect video for me. I am at shaping gusset and had reviewed my pattern and just wanted to confirm my understanding so I searched utube. I can now proceed confidently. Thank you!!
Thank you for your video. I have been trying to read a sock pattern for two years now. I am so glad I fell across your video- now I can link the pattern terminology that I didn’t know and finish my sock. Thank you!
A wonderful tutorial! Great instructions, especially when closing the holes while picking up stitches. So many tutorials don't address the holes and are out of focus. Thank you very much!
This is the BEST tutorial on socks I have ever seen! I don't know how I missed it weeks ago when I was searching. I made my first pair with an ok free pattern and some you tube videos to get me through the heel flap and gusset. When I watched yours today I did a swatch with some worsted wt yarn - I know that's a little heavy but slipper socks will be fine. Then I went to the calculator & pure magic! I was ready to try and figure it all out , trying to find info on negative ease etc. And here YOU DID IT ALL FOR ME thank you so much. I'll certainly subscribe and will be binging your videos
You video is making me brave enough to try socks for the first time. Not bad for 68 years old. You tutorial makes it seem so simple. Thank you very much. 🤗🤗🤗
I too am amazed at the different little steps that make a sock!😀 Also my friend I knitted a pair of socks for tells me they fit like a glove!🥰 Determined Delma😀🧶
OMG! I got it! I understand everything and I thank you so very much for that! Aha moment! Knitting my first pair of socks and I was about to cry! I watched several videos but could NOT wrap my brain around it till I saw yours! I’m so excited 😆
I loved your tutorial. I was stuck on the gusset shaping as I didn’t really understand the concept and which side to do left or right leaning decreases or exactly where the decreasing should be.. You have a very clear way of explaining it. Thank you so much.
Seriously!!! Great video!! So helpful. I was trying this type of heel because I have a large arch and the other sock heels I have used don't give me enough room in that area. I was getting so frustrated just reading the instructions over and over again and not being able to visualize what the pattern was trying to say. To be able to see what I am supposed to do was so helpful!! You are very precise and to the point, not a lot of rambling. I will definitely have to check out your other videos. Thanks again!!
This is an amazing tutorial, a PhD an socks knitting ! I purchased templated, paid someone to talk me though, watched i assume most tutorials on any media platform. That “start decreasing 2 stitches after the middle of the row” did the thing, all pieces fallen into the place. Thank you very much!
Thank you so much Jana, i was having so much trouble repositioning my needles after picking up the gusset stitches. I'm good with Magic Loop except for that & Magic Loop is easier on my hands, i learned on 9" circs, but this is so much easier on my arthritis hands. Thanks again.
I have never even tried to knit socks before I found this tutorial. This is by far the best and most helpful sock tutorial ever! You explain even the parts I didn't know existed in the making of a sock. This is perfect! Thank you so much for making these videos🥰
I really enjoyed how easy you made this to understand. I’ve been starting Christmas stockings and have been quite nervous about doing the heels. I’ve never done this before. Thank you. I can do this!!! :)
Super helpful tutorial, Jana! It is so easy to knit right along with you.. and your explanations are very clear and beneficial. Thanks for putting this video series together!
FINALLY, I have it straight! I have knitted 12 pairs cuff down, and. I always go through this kind of gerrymandering thing with the flap,, not knowing how to do the circular in a way that makes sense. SOMEHOW I get through it, and proceed down the foot. Now I won't worry all the way down to that part. Whew! Thank you!
Thank you ! I have not made socks for over 20 yrs. and at my age, I have been stymied ( forgotten how ) to make the the heel ' turn ' and heel ' gusset '. Finally, I can complete some socks for Christmas. Thanks again : )
You are such an amazing instructor. I would be interested to know if you have ever knitted a sock on flexiflips, I can’t seem to get the gusset right:(. I’m joining your other groups to see if you address it there.... thanks for all the great instruction!
Thanks Brenda. I have a set of Flexi Flips and don't really care for them. It's all personal preference. I like a longer, 5" needle before the cable begins.
Your farm fingernails are fabulous, and in need of no pardon :) And thank you for this amazing tutorial, I’m knitting my first socks ever, and it feels really confusing at first, but I’m doing all right thanks to you!
just realised Im following this video and you are doing cuff down ...I am doing my first toe up ...bugger ...that will teach me ...a little too keen listening to your great instructions ....anywho good practice Thankyou... I feel like Im listening to a friend ...
I didn’t start off with you but have downloaded these to do on my own. I hope that’s alright. I’ve watched other podcasts and could never follow them. Thanks for your help.
Since I sort of suck at picking up the stitches along the edge with one needle, and I'm not real good at poking my left needle in and lifting it for my right needle to work off of either (newbie here), AND since I'm a crocheter for many decades, I just use a crochet the same size as my knitting needle, pick up all the stitches (like in Tunisian crochet) and then transfer them all to my needle before knitting the next section. Whew~!! I'm sure I'll get the hang of it eventually, but for now ... it is what it is.
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. I'm a very slow learner so I've watched several times which is helpful for me. I have one question, I have one extra Stitch when picking up the gusset and you mention it wouldn't be a problem but I missed on how to fix that.
Hi Jana - I love your podcast and videos. You are so down to earth and friendly. I have a question about socks - when decreasing back to the original stitch count, is "knit two through the back loop" the same as slip slip knit?
They are slightly different. When you slip, slip, knit, you are slipping the stitches as if to knit, so you're turning them one at a time 180 degrees and changing the orientation of the stitch on the needle. When you SSK, the stitches tend to lay flatter then then you K2tbl. I hope that helps!
It is kind of hard to see what part of the sock you are working on can you point it out on the sock where we are? I am having difficulty with the gusset part where to decrease using DPNs. Great teaching videos thank you.
Excellent videos. I’m knitting my first pair of socks and don’t use double point needles so used magic loop as far as the heel flap, then I found your videos so was able to carry on with magic loop 😃 Now I need to find your size chart and Facebook page. As I’m in the UK, I usually decrease with slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over rather than ssk. As ssk is basically knit two together (but leaning the opposite way) does it make for a stronger stitch than k1, p1, psso?
I love your clear way of explaining it. However I am having a proble with getting my head round left leaning and right leaning on the gusset shaping as to me it is the wrong way round. On the second of the decreases it seems to me to lean left whereas the toe on that side would slope right? My brain is not working this out right. What is wrong?
Wonderfully clear instructions. But as a beginner with the magic loop I was doing fine till I hit the gusset, when it all went haywire, and after ripping all I'd done of the gusset back to its foundations TWICE! I reverted to the trusty DPNs. I found with the magic loop I kept losing track of where the gusset edges began and ended, and those awful wriggling loops getting in the way all the time were driving me mad!
@@PurlTogether Ah, I see. Thanks for that - I'll try it on the other sock, which is ready for gusseting. I'm determined to give the magic loop a fair trial, but I think for a while I'll miss the clarity you get with the DPNs, with your 4 sections neatly arranged on 4 different needles... Just a matter of practice, of course!
I love you tutorials - so easy to understand - I'm a fan! I noticed when you change colour you knot the 2 ends - do you then double knot or do you weave in yarns at the end - Thank you! 😇
@@PurlTogether Thank you - I thought so! How do I get your past tutorials You are really a sweetheart and soooo good - for socks I appreciate the way you explain and I can use any amount of stitches - thanks again!
In this video, I'm using the Knit Picks Interchangeable set: amzn.to/2GLsD02 However, I've since found this ChaioGoo set and love them even more! amzn.to/2GNMonN
You pick up one stitch on the edge of the heel flap for each "chain stitch" on the edge. So if you're heel flap is 32 rows, for example, you should have 16 stitches on the edge to pick up. Then you'll probably want to pick up an extra one in the corner to prevent a hole. Hope that helps!
2 questions: 1. Where can you buy a 2.25mm needle with a 40”(?) length of cord and recommended brand. I think I would prefer magic loop. I’m using a combo of DPNs and a small circular. 2. Is there a tip/ trick for pulling the yarn through when picking up stitches up the side of the heel flap? I really struggled to have it stay on the needle. I ended up using a crochet needle to pull them through. It looks so easy when you do it. Maybe I am knitting too tight? Thank you so very much for your help.
Here are the ones I prefer. amzn.to/3dAAXOq Using a crochet hook is just fine if you need to. Yes, you might be knitting too tightly. Thanks for watching!
Hi Janna, so, I was wondering where would be the best place to increase the size of the gusset? My mom has arthritis in her ankles, so knitting socks the regular way, she has a bit of an issue getting them up over her ankle. The rest of the sock fits wonderfully, but is there any way I can make it so it’s easier for her to get on over her ankle/heel? Thanks! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Yes, check out the newer version of this tutorial and consider making the heel flap longer, so that you are picking up more stitches for the gusset. Doing so will make the instep larger around and make the decreasing more gradual since there are more stitches. Does that make sense? ru-vid.com/group/PLNWbWGGFfxXnClP7lljZNuMDlqXIDttie
Great. I’m using four needles...so having trouble knowing which row to do decrease. Do I decrease on my knit row then purl a row then knit a row with no decrease.???? Then purl a row and on my next knit row decrease? Does that make any sense?..
There is no purling since you're knitting in the round. The only time you purl is when you're knitting the heel turn and the flap back and forth. When knitting the gusset, you're alternating the decrease row with the plain knitting row. You might also find it helpful to watch this updated version of the gusset decreases. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_R7cJZec-84.html
Thank you so much! Watching your videos I made my first ever knitted heel! Wow! You’re the best teacher! I’m halfway to my first sock and will still need to watch part 4 to learn to close the toes. I will post my first socks on instagram @lillapuppi
my sock has ladders all the way up my gusset the v that goes down the foot . yikes what did i do wrong and its only on 1 side of foot ? Ty in advance for any help / maybe im ssk ing wrong ?
A couple of thing could be happening. Have you tried on the sock? Was it tight? If so you may be getting ladders because you're stretching out the stitches and maybe didn't cast on enough to begin with? I'm also linking a video here about preventing ladders ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f5o9CkKBfqA.html
They are the Knit Picks interchangeables here: amzn.to/2SS7KG8 (affiliate link) Since then though, I've gotten the ChaioGoo set and I much prefer them.
Are the instructions for this basic sock written out anywhere? I’m trying to take notes, but if they’re already written up, I’d love to print them out. (My notes are a bit of a mess). Thank you.
This is a terrible video. You're talking too much, too fast and you aren't showing your work AT ALL. No one could possibly see what you are doing here. Terrible. I note that one woman says "best tutorial ever on knitting socks!" I am assuming that she doesn't need the video portion and listening to you is enough for her. Some people DO learn that way - but this isn't a podcast, right? Everyone has their own way of learning, and I really need to see a video, so I am giving up on your tutorials. Maybe when I am an expert I will understand you. For now,I thank you for your effort and I am moving on.
