You know bostitch nailer has a shingle gauge on them right? Set it at 6" and you're set to run your staircase. But if you're on a gable to gable, racking them is easier. Makes every row stagger spot on, then you just use the line up slits to keep the reveal the same throughout. People make out 3 tabs being so hard and complicated but in reality they're super easy to install.

Here in Texas we run them on sixes, pop two up and down lines. Either measure off Gable or on a hip run make a sq. Line off of your bottom line then mark a line six " off of it never had any complaints. Oh you pop your lines as close to the middle of run as possible, not just 3 ft off of a gable

eric, why not cut a little less off the ridge cap, that way, when the next cap gets nailed, each shingle will have an extra set of nails holding each ridge cap down.

like the videos i do have shingled all my life an from michigan, union roofer my self an honest that stager look wouldn't pass inspection use a chalk line from facia to peak an off the rake horizontal an verical lines an water marks in 3 tab shingle will be perfect an i like shingled valleys less likely to leak but a cut valley is more eye apeling. and who the hell uses a 3 tab these days arcatectual shingle is the way to go way easy no thinking about it just but an run!!!thanks for shring

eric why not jsut do the 5 and 5/8 that always worked for me and that is what the manufacturer recommends

The section that was installed using the traditional method should have been run up the rake egde, doing this avoids having those small tab lines at the rake. SNAP A LINE AND INSTALL THEM PROPERLY!
