This lesson is years old now, And it's gotten me through a serious plateau. It's also helped me get into the mind of a personal hero of mine. Thank you very much Scott. It's very much appreciated.
Thank you so much for this. Willie has grown to superhuman status the longer I've attempted to play guitar over the lst 51 years. He gets more and more brilliant the more I try and emulate his beautiful jazz type syncopation but perfectly in the structure of the vocals and arrangement. He is certainly a genius in the levels of Django Reinhardt, Bily Strings, Doc Watson, and Vince Gill. Truly a genius and I'm deeply grateful to have learned enough to appreciate his musical prowess. Pure genius
Just wanted to say THANKS ... I'm 61 years old and just started taking guitar lessens about 2 and a half months ago ... Willie's playing has always inspired me ... like so many of the great ones, Joe Walsh, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and so many others ... it's been a lifetime dream of mine just to learn to play at all. I will never be great, or probably even very good, but I sure am enjoying the ride ... and this video made my day ... keep up the good work. Guys like you mean an awful lot to guys like me.
Thanks man! Willie is one of a kind for sure and a TRUE ORIGINAL. Welcome to the guitar player's club! Play what makes you happy. It's not about being good, or great....it's about getting joy out of it. You can't put a price on happiness. Be happy my friend!
Wow, us old farts rule! I started piano lessons at 63 and love every minute of it. Somehow I've ended up with two piano teachers - one who makes me toe the line and learn to read and gives me all of the formal stuff - and another who tries to teach me jazz by scribbling stuff on bits of paper, putting it in front of me and telling me to play it. I can't argue with either approach because they are both right and more importantly, both right for me.
Hi my friend! Yeah, you get it for sure! Willie just makes me smile to hear him play. He tried the corporate look and style in the beginning and then he literally let his hair down and let his soul out and, it's been a rocky tax road for him, but all the rest has been pure gold!
Thank you so much. I’ve always appreciated Willie Nelson’s style. He is truly one of a kind. The walk ups and walk downs are just the cherry on the frosting of what makes him great and unique as an artist. I’ve got a lot of work to do to catch up. Or maybe not. Willie is Willie, thank God. And then there’s each one of us. Thanks again. Peace ☮️
I agree, my friend. I am a metal/shred guy and I've learned to really appreciate Willie. Country style is new to me but I love it. There is something about how the notes move that is very interesting and I enjoy your lessons. Thanks!
Scott, thanks, that was great. I have seen Willie at least 30 times since 1977. He is my HERO. my first time was at the Charlie Daniels volunteer Jam in Nashville. I was hooked. I heard Willie say that his favorite guitar player was Django Reinhardt, you can hear this in most of all his playing. Thanks my friend, Gary
I hear you my friend. The man is one of a kind and it doesn't matter if it's his voice or his guitar you hear first, you 100% know who it is within the very first note. That is just so rare and amazing. I hope we get to enjoy him a lot longer!
scott, I have tried everything , from books video gibsons learn and master, you name it ,I feel like I'm in a rut and cant get out, but you have helped me a lot and I want you to know I appreciate you, you are doing a great thing, god bless you
Thanks , you can transmit the depth of Willy's playing. The more mature willy gets , seems like a fine wine , mellows , fewer notes , tons more feeling ! He goes places that defy music theory . I have watched him perform angels to close in front of ten of his peers , they are all silent , with huge smiles just shaking their heads. The one and only ... Willy . 🖖❤️🇺🇸
Scott you made this a while ago,but I love this song Angeles flying to close to the ground l now really love Willie and the highway men.loved the way you played it and explained it Just want to THANK YOU!!!!!!! You opened my eyes.BE WELL ! A FRIEND
that song & willie= perfect. You break it down very very well. Even for people who don't play an instrument I think this would help them appreciate willies skill & style.
"Angel' is absolutely the song the I am trying to learn. That, 'Til I can Gain Control Again' and 'I'd have to be Crazy' are pretty much essentials for me. Thanks! Just ordered the DVD.
God bless you Scott! So many would take your priceless wealth of knowledge to the grave but your a giver and work your ass off in the process. Hats off to you man!
yea I play just like him and learned how to play sitting in front of my stereo listening to the red headed stranger album. have a 1970 Martin classic signed by him. his biggest fan!
Scott, thanks so much for the work you put into this, and sharing the love for Willie's playing. My Dad, a non-musician himself, came up with a nickname for those chromatic walk ups and walk downs: to this day, affectionately known in our family as "The Willie Double"
I was a rocknroll guy as a teen but as a child I had a stack of 45s that encompassed the entirety of my dad and older siblings records from the 50's up through 1980 or so. As an adult I was given a copy of Stardust on CD. This was just after my brother died. I had heard Willie's radio hits but man that one was like pure jazz and the most gorgeous lines and lyrics. It really helped me open up my musical tastes amd got me through one of the hardest times in my life. It also opened the door for more country based acts like Drive By Truckers and the more alternative styles of country and southern rock. It was nice to learn I could actually sing rocknroll with my natural Western North Carolina Great Smokey Mountains accent and didn't have to wash it up to remove any sign of twang. Excellent video I am happy to be able to play those Angel walk ups now. Thanks.
This freaking video. I have watched it probably 100 times. And it don't get old. Thanks for.the info . I have put this into my memories forever. Thanks again
You have a beautiful spirit to take the time to show us something that would, not only give us playing the "Willie Style", but also the other Willie Nelson fans sitting around the campfire listening to me. Also thank you for saving my neck in Texas by emphasizing the correct technique to play a Willie Nelson song. My favorite song is "She is Gone", it would be a blessing if you could teach us po' folks the song if you would be so kind. May God continue to bless you always....
Thank you, thank you! I've been a Willie fan for 50 years. I even bought a nylon string, so I could capture his sound. Equipment, technique, and soul all have to be there, but as you implied, equipment is the least important (beyond a certain point). Thanks for the technique. I may not have Willie's soul, but now I have something to work on the rest of my life.
Scott you are the Bomb ! I appreciate all of your knowledge and experience !! I have been playing for 35 years, and I've learned a ton from you bro !!!
From one "Scott" to another...THE BEST Willie impersonation/ homage EVER! Willie is a living National Treasure. Thanks for sharing all of your copious knowledge. I once saw one of those, "Behind the Music" - type shows, all about Willie. The interviewer asked him, "Do you ever think about retiring?" Willie said, "HELL man.... All I do, is play MUSIC?... & Play GOLF!... Now....... WHICH one do you want me to quit ?! Thanks again Scott
Willie my personal hero besides Glen Campbell and has been since mid 70s Not a lot learning video I see playing an Ovation guitar. I haven’t had anything but ovation guitars since 78. So I found me a new favorite channel today. Thanks a lot for all the instructions here❤️👍🙏
I am really glad I found your channel, you are very refreshing. I've been playing over 40yrs. what you said about Willie is absolutely true, he scares the crap out of all the studio musicians because of his own timing when it comes to recording. thanks for posting.
thanks for the free lessons im 71 and pick up electric rental and start to just enjoy it again play a bit but did what everybody does and put it back in closet
Thank you so much Scott. I was born in 1971 and raised with race horses and on a race track and in every barn it was always country music and I'll never forget EVER the first time I heard Willie Nelson. Still to this day by far my favorite musician of all time. My mother loved the more conventional songs such as Crystal Gail and Tanya Tucker, Lorretta Lynn, Charlie Pride ect. and my dad was into the "Outlaws" I love all of it but Willie Nelson rules all for me and always hasThank you for putting this together. I will be buying your Willie CD too! You are such an amazing teacher - you CRUSH everyone else on RU-vid! Thanks for being the dude you are! It is very much appreciated. I feel like a kid on Christmas now that I've found your stuff on here! I just subscribed! Thanks again it's all amazing!
Scott, you are so right about Willie. Just because he doesn't play an electric with a marshall stack don't mean he can't play. You just have to listen a little closer and his chops are as good as any. I've always loved his vocals as well.
Thanks for the priceless sharing; I always regard Willie as one of the most honest players ever..never scripted but straight from the heart of a gifted master. He always seems to forget about rigid boundaries and just plays the music. Incidentally, that walk up off the E reminds me of the walk up bass riff in "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" but with feeling. Thanks again!
I just found your channel couple days ago from what I've seen I really like your teaching style it works with me . I have a hard time finding teachers that I really like for my learning style
Thanks for ruining my Memorial Day weekend! I have looked for help with this for a long time and I know I can't possibly put my guitar down until I master this one. Thanks Scott. You break it down so well...
Saw Willie Nelson..first time, this past Monday nite. I never realized how great of guitar player her was! Great Jazzy licks on Trigger...I was really inspired watching him play.
Thank you, Scott, i give a flyin' rat butt, you are so correct how epic and influential Willie Nelson is for his playing, his singing, his songwriting and lyric ability. He keeps his songs fresh, they are so timeless. Thank you for your easy to follow instruction.
Thanks Scott, I always thought Willie was a superb singer and a GREAT guitar player even though I came from a Blues-R&B rock background, I kept an open mind and when I hear great playing I really appreciated it, whether it was Jazz, Country, or any other genre, Scotty Moore on early Elvis. Little Richard on Piano, still makes me want to get up and dance.
Thank you so much. I could not agree with you more bout' Mr. Nelson. I will be working hard mastering this. Have loved "angel flying too close" forever. His licks in "I never loved you" are haunting. Again thanks so much . Love Groovey lessons !!
Willy to me is a guitar legend, when he put a pickup in trigger, trigger became part of the band. Willy has inspired a legion of new guitar players including myself. His style is unique to himself with the flavor of the two finger master Django Reinhardt! Great video.
I remember, I think in the early 80's I saw a movie Wille did called "Honeysuckle Rose". I thought I live recordings for that movie were brilliant. I will always have major respect for the "Red Headed Stranger" Thanks for this nice tribute.
Thanks much John. I'm glad you both like it. I don't mind giving it away. Music is meant to be shared. I sell enough to keep the wife in good shape for after I'm gone and the rest is just friends sharing with friends. Just good fun!
Thanks Scott!! I'm one of the guys that "gets it" When is comes to Willie and his incredible guitar playing style!! I had to pick up my guitar when the video started and haven't put it down yet!! SOO COOL!!!!!
Hey Scott, great Willie Nelson lesson!!! I can't agree with you more, Willie is a gift to mankind! I can't go a single day without listening to The Outlaw, The Legend, The Man.......THE REDHEADED STRANGER!!!! He is the BEST!!!!
Thanks my friend. Yeah, Willie deserves a lot more attention. We're not going to have him much longer and they guy is just a MONSTER player. Not another one out there that you can tell who it is by the first note he plays. What a great guy!
Man...... If You ar'nt One Cool Dude then Who Is ? ...... Thank God for People Like Scott Grove who Can Teach Something In a Way That You Can Understand it Without Boring you Half to Death..... Man How Great are This Guys Lessons ? Thank You Man..... ............ Thank you
Man I have been telling people what a great guitar player willie is for years , as I have been practicing his style for years as well. Great video thanks
You confirmed something I've been telling people for a long time now when you referenced his understanding of blues and jazz. When Willie takes a solo on that old guitar of his, you can almost bet the house on him either playing it as Mexican music or he will drop in a few little jazz licks. Just like Chet Atkins, Willie is a frustrated jazz player! The best part is though, it doesn't matter how he plays it, because what really matters is he can play...very, very well!
Great comments about Willie's playing! He IS a genius! It's always interesting to see where he's going next because he hears things in his mind that no one expects. Thanks for your video and comments.
Thanks my friend. It's cool that you were exposed to all kinds of music. We all play the same chords and same notes, some simply have a little less distortion on them. lol
Hey man, don't be making fun of Willie. Okay, Okay there's a little drama in his walk up and downs. You had me rolling, but it was actually helpful. Thanks!
That is for sure! A man who's guitar has always been such an amazing part of his entire being. We're lucky to have been alive during his lifetime to experience someone who will often change a song every single time he plays it live. I love that kind of creative performing. Anyone can play their 3 chord hit song the same every night for their whole life, but Willie breathes a new life and soul into everything he does on a daily basis. Simply an awesome way to do things and true freedom in your music. Willie is a national treasure for sure.
I love to feel music in the pit of my stomach and Willie has that magic . And I just love the man for all that he is . True . Most of the good musicians are getting old now and I dont see so many fresh blood coming in . Then again maybe my ears are not as on the ground as they should be to hear the new stuff .
I was lucky enough to be raised by my grandparents. Although as a kid I was into KISS, Black Sabbath, and all that cool 70's hard rock....at home they listened to a lot of classical music, show tunes, opera, and sometimes Willi Nelson! hahahaa So I have really fond memories of my grandfather singing like Willie in the living room some days. again another great one Scott, you rule!
Thanks Scott! Great advice at the end too. Music is a language ....and Willie has his own dialect for sure. I personally dont try to copy anyone note for note....however certain licks and styles are important to learn. The ones that stick with me hopefully will define ME as a player. Ultimately we all want to be unique in our "language" on guitar......or at least have an original story to tell.
Willie is a hell of a good guitar player, and anyone who doesn't think so, has much yet to learn in my opinion. There are two other players I love who always or did ad-lib a song in new ways.
For many many years I have always wanted to play all of the lead parts of the song “all of me” by Willie Nelson. That song is special to me and my girlfriend. It is our favorite song of all the world. I don’t mean just one or two little parts of it. I mean all the lead parts from the beginning to the end. If you could do that I would be eternally grateful. Is there anyway that could be done thank you. Yes I know you talk about not cloning something. The reason I want to play this is because I really really really like it. I just want to know how to play it. Please break your rule of not wanting to clone something this one time. I really really want to learn all those Lead Parts so bad. I can’t find them anywhere I’ve been searching for years
Im so glad to know someone else shares my uneducated opinion of how unique Willie's arrangements are. Im no muso and just play for my own enjoyment and not good either but I know cool when I hear it and yes you are so right he plays Willie from his sacred zone and somehow it all fits with everyone else in the band. Im not crazy after all
Thanks for getting me interested in Willie's playing style. Didn't know he was trying to get the Django Reinhardt tone and his guitar was a classical like the Washburn you have.
Not really a country fan, but I got into Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson in the 1970's. They both were, and are, phenomenal talents. Outlaws forever.
