I was born there in 1956 and lived in the town until I was ten. It was such a great little town, my parents knew everyone to talk to, all the shopkeepers, it was such a friendly place. My dad worked at Kelvins and I went to school at Fairfields and then Brookvale. We lived at Penrith Rd, Worting Rd and Shooters Way over the years. Look at the place now....full of strangers and totally without any soul.
What a blast from the past! I lived there in the late 70's - late 80's. Instantly remembered the smell of chlorine from the pool vents whilst walking through town, the markets in the square and that dodgy little barbers near the cinema.
This looks more like an early 70's cine film of the then "New" town centre. One view is of the New Market Square - the film-maker stood opposite to what was Knights the record shop. Wote Street used to run along the front edge of the New Market Square up until around 1967. The part that may be from the late sixties is the footage of a derelict Lower Brook Street. The Roundabout in front of Brook House is named after the Victory public house which stood there before the redevelopment.
oh dear lol i know it was in the 60's but still it looked pretty bad and in my opinion could still do with some improvement now in some parts but it is definitely better than it was.
