Bass Comparison - Spector, Dingwall, Warwick & Fender

The lineup is:
Spector Euro 5LX
Dingwall Combustion 3 6 string (pickups: bridge middle in series)
2000 Warwick Corvette standard 5 (made in Germany) bubinga / wenge
1997 Fender Jazz Bass deluxe 4
All recorded direct through the same clean HX Stomp preset (Rochester Comp - SVT-4 amp sim - Ampeg 8x10 IR) mixed 50/50 with the basses DI; just minor adjustments made for volume and output.

Spector had a more consistent tone across the strings so I'd say the best. I think the pickups played a major part in tone here. There was a marked difference of tone with the Fender especially on the low string which was surprising for a JAZZ bass.

Well it is strange for me.... 1- spector 2- fender 3- warwick 4- dingwall but in real life I would prefer warwick to fender although here he showed himself worse. I wanted to put the dingwall higher, but this is more because of the name than because of the real impression

Thanks for the inputs! Way to be honest with yourself, not picking by brand image & perception. What sounds best by itself or to a different type of song may be something else than in this context. Hope it's an interesting little comparison for you, cheers from Germany

We seem to have similar tastes - that's quite exactly my order of preference at the moment. The Euro is the workhorse, but there are some specific sounds / styles where I choose the Dingwall or the J instead. The Warwick is more like a backup at the moment...

@@SW-he9kw Nice! This bass has the DCs; a bit over a year ago I checked out a 6 string Euro 6LX-TW, liked that one aswell. In German shops, I mostly see the Bartolini Euros these days; only few EMG DCs. Don't think I've seen a TW in a while. Which pickups does your 5LX have?

Warwick Dingwall Fender Spector I like clear and bright basses. Spector sounds too muddy and plastic

Yeah, it definitely has that special characteristic that cuts through so well. Personally, I suspect it has something to do with the combination of the brass bridge & nut together with the pickups and preamp...

Hmm yeah, some pricy ones in there... Note that the Fender actually cost less than the Warwick when I bought it. Do consider that the difference in sound are not that big, especially when buried in a rock mix. A while ago I compared a Spector Euro & Musicman Bongo to a mid- to entry-level Ibanez SR - and surprisingly the latter can hold its own despite the vastly lower price tag :) Thanks and cheers from Germany!

you can find a lot of used Warwicks in the low $1,000's surprisingly. their value tends to depreciate a lot

Keep in mind that their prices for new models have increased dramatically - so I suppose people can sell older basses at rather low prices because they didn't pay that much themselves. I bought this made-in-Germany Corvette in 2000 for $1200 new - the most similar GPS model is now offered for 2400€ around here.

Thanks!! Ah man, we have a whole EP composed, but we're taking forever in tweaking around with the demos :))) We're looking to discover new lands by incorporating more synths to ornament the soundscape and carve out the song dynamics. A whole new world!
