Helpful video. I plan to replace the nut on both my Squire fretless and a Sting Ray. I'm going with adjustable bell brass nuts. The removal looks like the hardest part. I'll do this at my dad's cabinet shop. He has more tools than I do...lol
Just found your channel because the neck on my fender deluxe jazz v is fekkin nackered and I wanna learn myself some repair. I'm in like Flynn! thanks for all the informative and funny videos! Subscribed (and you're a local man to boot right on)
Great video. I wanted to see how much was involved in changing the nut. I want to adapt a 4 string bass guitar for B.E.A.D. strings. I will definitely take it to my favorite luthier.
Dave, could you use an iron to steam the nut to loosen it up, if there is too much glue? I have to replace a nut on a new Sterling RAYSS4 bass. I am planning to replace it with a brass nut. Can brass be glued in place? What type of glue?
Bahahahaha!!! I was far too entertained for what this video was. The singing about what you're doing is right up my alley!!! And the part where you "read" the disclaimer...."If you're a dick and don't know what you're doing you should probably take it to an even bigger dick..." 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for sharing and the laugh! I was like do I take my bass to have some D!ck work on it or can I find some D!ck on RU-vid that's already done it! WahLah! Here comes Dave!! A most enjoyable, instructional and entertaining video if I may add. I'll be tackling this myself thanks to you...
While I fully agree that if the fit is really good, theres no need for glue, my stupid obsessive brain just can't allow me to put one in without just the tiniest dot of regular Elmer's white glue on the bottom of the nut. I just can't do it.
@@Bollz-b6s No, you shouldn't, not on a nut. It needs to be very easily removable without damaging the surrounding wood. And I'm not talking about the non-toxic school glue, I'm talking about Elmer's original white glue, they aren't the same.
Dave ; is a little bit of heat a bad idea when removing a nut.The couple I've done so far have come out easy. But I know I won't always get that lucky.
Nice man, nice job! Or the opposite, don't know... Pretty useful too! But I'd better stop struggling... : same issue but I don't have the tools for the job. Better safe than whiny. :)
Been there, done that!!! Loved it on my 1978 P bass fretless. Harmonics came out after doing so. Intonation became more spot-on. Do your thing Darryl6636
3:54 wont you buy me a Mercedes Benz My friends all drive porsches I must make amends. Sorry Dave! It is just one of them things that comes out when I hear people say Oh Lord. :-)
I was at Market Mall here in Calgary on Monday and there were people EVERYWHERE! Doesn't anybody work anymore, or kids go to school? Must nearing Christmas time--already! Oh yeah, I forgot. Ottawa decided to drop a monkey wrench in Calgary's economy so all we've got to do anymore is window shop at the mall.
Interesting comment about taking your bass to a bigger dick (Luther) who "should" know what he is doing. This particular Luther cut my brass nut down to .017" clearance at the first fret. Now I have to replace the nut and find someone who ISN'T a dick!
