Bass Legend Vs “The SBL Session Challenge”

Scott's Bass Lessons

If you’ve ever wondered what the session legends are thinking the first time they’re faced with recording a track they’ve never seen or heard before… this lesson is for you.
I was lucky enough to get Sharay Reed (yep, the man, the myth and the legend!) into the studio for you guys…
We talked about a tonne of stuff, but right at the end of our conversation we thought it’d be fun to put Sharay on the spot.
Here’s what we did…
We gave him a lead sheet to a piece of music he’d never seen before.
We then got him to talk through his thought process when looking at a new piece of music.
And then… we hit record and he performed the entire piece.
Zero run through.
Just red light - GO!
Ready to see what happened next?! ;)
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

Scott, I saw the vids many years ago and of course almost cried due to needing to sell my basses instantly thereafter. But what's important here is this: he's an amazing soul of a human. I wrote him and he wrote back. He sent DVDs of his instructional vids to me with handwritten labels on them. Imagine the privilege of him being a quiet, sober HUMAN with a stranger. SO consistent with your great spirit, Scott, is this celebration of SR by you. You are a bright light.

Very helpful to see what a great pro like Sharay does when you put a piece of sheet music for the 1st time in front of him. What a great idea Scott of putting the chords on the screen as he plays, so we can play along and compare. Awesome!! That is exactly what I expect from a bass lesson. Thanks for that great video Scott. More of this pls!

@looda10
@looda10 5 лет назад
@@xlaythe depends if you call experience just a number of years practicing or being consistent at the right place at the right time. playing in church helps a lot. Lots of cats that never played in church that are phenomenal. But when you look at Cory Henry these cats are playing with a feel that only faith can give. Gospel music is also a combo between several styles/genres. It opens up on the world. It depends on how curious and consistent we are to explore further not only music but life in general. Peace bro!

Dear Scott first of all i would like to thank you for the 1 week bass mini course(it was awesome!) you're a really great teacher but most importantly a good person and that shows through your videos you've made all these years. Secondly for a guy at my age (born in '78) it"s a privilege to watch a video like this one,because we didn't have access to all that information.Plus that it is really wonderful to see such a great bass player create something so tasteful on the fly.So the conclusion for those who pressed dislike is...DON'T BE UNGRATEFUL FOR WHAT YOU'RE GIVEN!!!

I can remember it like yesterday, me and him were locked and the one judge for the shows face went right to stank face!! Sharay didnt continue on the show because he knew the contract sucked and probably had a better gig lined up anyways. I made it to the house in la and then got kicked off the first challenge. As I've stated elsewhere; Sharay is in another universe. The rest of us are trying to find it. His mastery of the tone of his instrument is light years beyond any human understanding. His subtle sub-plucking of chord tones above the root he's playing to highlight the main tone... I'm telling you. He's not from this realm. The amount of work you have to put in to achieve this is not outer worldly...it's extra-universal!
