I believe John Myung is one of the most underrated bass players of our time. He has created so many incredible bass parts to so many great epic Dream Theater's songs, he deserves a lot mor recognition. He is one of our most precious living music legends, period.

I think it’s because he likes to keep to himself more than any other thing, he is widely recognized but he doesn’t seem to like going into the spotlight as much hence there is no material for his fans to really share and comment on

😭 I've encountered about 4-5 people over the years who all were there. Everyone unanimously has the same feelings you do. As much as I love "Live at Budokan", there is something about the Score DVD that is just leagues above the rest. They just captured something real. I mean, everything from the editing, the production - it's hard to put my finger on.

Fatal Tragedy was the first song I ever heard from SFAM - still blows me away to this day. It's so....different than so many of their other songs, I can't put my finger on it (in the best way possible). Just a killer vibe.

John Myung is the reason I play Bass! He’s my bass god and always will be! I was fortunate enough to have teen them a ton of times my first show of their ms was the Metropolis 2000 tour here in Tampa best $25 of my life!! I remember when Myung went to the Bongo bass I was Soo happy! Myungs right hand technique has been the center of my playing! His progressive bass concepts VHS changed my life!! They changed Prog music forever!I I think people who are confused by the 3 finger technique are trying to do “ I M R” fingers instead of the opposite “Ring middle Index, it’s just a more natural flow after “the 3rd arrives” it’s goes the hell down! Lol one of my favorite DT sections ever!!

Him, Cliff, and Geddy are completely in my DNA forever, and were instrumental (pun intended) on my learning curve. I'd have killed to see DT back in those days, only found out about them in 2005ish and finally saw them live in 2009 (they were still awesome, but the SFAM days are where it's at). I ALSO grew up on Progressive Bass Concepts - that VHS tape is still sitting in this room!

@@LowEndUniversity I desperately wish John would've gone more into his right-hand technique on that video. It fascinates me that he uses both 1+2 and 1+3 as picking patterns, but he says nothing about how or why. I wish he'd do another instructional about his own particular style. Billy Sheehan and Alex Webster have both broken down their technique in books and videos, but John Myung remains a mystery to me.

Great song. Met Johnny Myung & John Petrucci back when awake came out they did an in-store appearance at local record theater here in Buffalo. Great guys I talked gear with Johnny for awhile. He asked what kind of setup I was using..Ampeg SVTs been using them forever 2 8x10s switch between rack mount SVT 4pro & classic heads. Anyway I love harmonics to but then again I grew up watching my friend Billy Sheehan play local bars high School dances lol. Glad I found your channel.

Coming from someone who’s been practicing his stuff for years, that is a real dumb narcissistic statement to make. You are NOT as good as someone because you can just play their parts. I would be willing to think he would have some of the same problems I have with songs like “beyond this life” “Dark eternal night” the stamina. I play dream theater about an hour and a half a day and my left forearm needs breaks in some songs it’s really tough!!

I also bought a six string because of John Myung (Actually two, a Thumb and a Corvette) and was blown away after watching the Live DVD of SFAM in NY 2000 and Live DVD Tokyo 1993 for the very first time in 2003 and 2004. I just couldn't believe how good they are...an almost unhuman way of playing...very inspiring and frustating at the same time.

I believe I remember reading/hearing when this came out that Jordan composed the orchestra parts. Jordan liked to use a lot and still like to use a lot of string and horn sounds and had great ideas for how the orchestra could compliment the song rather than just mimic the band. I always liked the way the horns sound in this performance and I think a lot of it is because they stand out without sounding out of place. If you haven't yet, you should watch the DVD for these old live shows (Score, Live: Scenes from New York and maybe Budokan) listen to the band commentary for some cool stories about the performance or even the writing process.

His musicianship is absolutely mindblowing - the guy is an endless well of composing. And, believe me, I've listened to all those documentaries and commentaries dozens of times : )

I don't remember where I saw this tip first but back in the day the way I strengthened my ring finger was to tape it with my middle one and remove the tape after building enough strength to be able to pluck with it. It was painful and annoying in the beginning but definitely worth it. It's much easier for example when you want to play galloping Steve Harris-style lines.

Great video and love the band. I totally agree that this is the pinnacle of Dream Theater. Minor correction, the comment was made that Rush and Yes never played with an orchestra. That’s not quite accurate. While true in the 90’s, the Clockwork Angels album and tour featured an [admittedly smaller] 8 person string ensemble. It added so much.

I saw them in Atlanta on this tour. They opened for Megadeth. The venue was great and the show was of course awesome. Both bands were on top of their game that night. I'm also almost positive that heard Jame's natural voice over the PA at one point. 😮 He was SO loud in that venue.

In terms of music nerd, John Myung was an ultra geek! Given that, it makes his bass lines even more difficult (and impossible) to interpret, recreate, or analyze! He might be given his own category!

This is by far and away my favorite era of Dream Theater. My first DT album Octavarium. And I've always said that album is by musicians for musicians. As a casual listener the album is great. But if you know music theory it goes to whole other level. The amount of musical Easter eggs on that album is insane and it isn't limited to just the music. And for this video of Metropolis one thing that has always made me laugh is if you look at Portnoy’s kit just above one of his crashes their is a mirror. And it's aimed right at the orchestra conductor. That had me falling out of my chair laughing the first time I saw it. Because as an orchestra player the one thing that is drilled into your head is watch the conductor.

I have been a John Myung fan from day one I heard them. I've owned each one of his Yamahas. The JM6 which was the green one, and the JM2 which was the Plum Pearl Metallic. Didn't really like either one which I heard John didn't either. I did however manage to get my hands on a limited Edition Emerald Sparkle Green Music Man Bongo 6 HS. Love that bass very much!

Same, Gary! I really liked his Yamaha era, I thought the basses (and corresponding tones on the records) were some of his best, particularly his sound on Falling Into Infinity. Not many players use rest strokes and free strokes. You use rest strokes when you go through the string to mute the one below. You use free strokes for harmonics and chords. Awesome!

The first tapping part you talked about is kind of like a Bach thing. It’s weird because he’s shifting with the chord changes along with the band. But that static B, if you think of it as the melody his harmony is shifting under it in the way that Bach would play with bass notes to change the tonality of a melody. In this case it’s pretty simple but in the context of the song it changes the feel completely and that static B really ties all the different chords together and really highlights the changes. Simple but actually very clever.

My only problem with Myung is his sound live. Out of all my favorite bass players, I hear him the least amount on his solos and that pisses me off!

I find their mixes frustrating because myung is so low in the mix… often I cannot hear what he’s doing clearly. I like bass more forward in the mix, porcupine tree, Duran Duran etc…

You make nice videos but I'd like to make a comment. If a segment is eight measures long, you have a tendency to play the first four and then stop and start commenting. My suggestion is to let the whole segment play. Then go back and highlight the part you want to comment on. I'm not saying play the whole song. But just let the whole segment play. Because when you stopped it after only a couple of measures, it gets frustrating because I'm just starting to enjoy it when you stop it. For example let the whole bass solo play and then go back and comment on different parts of the bass solo. 😊

William, I appreciate the feedback! I’m constantly working to get the best balance possible between commentary and the content. This was I think my 5th or 6th video many months ago, I’m into the 30s now and have worked hard on it. Hope you can check out some of the more recent ones - I did one for “The Glass Prison” last week! 🙏🏼

This album has the loudest hi-hat known to man. This super shit mix has bugged me since it came out. There are alot of dubs on James voice, but I dont know if they dubbed the other guys as well. Doubt Myung needs any dubs at all, he is a robot. Sorry I forgot to mention the horrible simulated hall reverb on it all.

I think it's an endearing production style that speaks a lot about the era, and I like it for that reason. It's a really signature sound I associate with that record. In some parts of the record, it's quite nice in my opinion - others, it can sound a little out of balance. When the 'Greatest Hits' remixes for I&W came out, I just couldn't get used to them...haha.

Can I add that since John went to musicman the bass sound has been lost. The dynamic and clarity is gone........ The Yamaha bass was really smooth and present, had the highs when needed and the presence was there, now its just gone. It has to me anyway.
