➡️ HOLY $#@%! This truly made my day. “Mindset” by Gacharic Spin has been the most requested song for me to do a reaction / analysis video for, and I can absolutely see why. Each member’s musicianship is firing on all cylinders, yet the song is presented in such a fun way - quite an amazing feat to pull off. Despite this act hailing from Japan, I really love the way it reminds me of American disco and funk acts such as Chic, or even Gloria Gaynor, but kicked in overdrive with shades of jazz fusion a la Dirty Loops. I simply couldn’t stop dancing in my chair! In this video, I experience bassist F Chopper Koga from ‪@GacharicSpin‬ for the very first time and quickly notice that her slap bass is executed with surgical precision, excellent tone, catchy phrasing, and a bold presence. I break down her use of slapping / popping mixed with some double-thump technique, the song’s jazz fusion influences and chord progressions, and much more.

This was lovely to see. While my favourite is still Band-Maid, Gacharic Spin is the band I most want to see get more recognition (along with Asterism). There is such genius in that band and I don't know why they aren't bigger. Maybe it's because they can and do play in any genre, and the diversity is too much for some? Just so you know when exploring their stuff, they made two hard-rock albums under the name Doll$boxx, in collaboration with the lead singer of Unlucky Morpheus. Definitely worth checking out too.

Gacharic Spin is a crazy band - in the most nicest way. Each member is a killer musician who could play in the best funk, prog or rock bands. Some of them are even multi-intrumentists and all of them sings (... except Koga). They are totally original but, as you said, totally japanese too. They don't take themselves seriously (their concerts are aften delirious) but they take their music very seriousy! And they are lovely people too, with an already very long history (the band was formed in 2009).

Being a Bass player myself, I started my Japanese female band journey with Band-Maid and thought they were the cream until I heard G.S. and F Chopper Koga - her ability to keep the low end of the song driving, while slapping and popping is amazing - Koga's Doll$boxx work is also very inspiring. She has also done several slap bass instructional videos

Band-Maid, Lovebites, Nemophila, Gacharic Spin, TRiDENT are bands I listen to every day. There’s also a few random anime songs out there that are trending in the Japanese bass world. I don’t have to list them because RU-vid will be throwing them your way soon. A lot of these pop songs seem to feature a bass rather than hide them like we do here in America.

Gacharic Spin do whatever the hell they want, so if you check out more of them, don't be surprised to be surprised (stylewise) ;) As a bass-main you'll get your money's worth, cause Koga always delivers. Sometimes more technical, sometimes more laid back, but always fitting the song. They need all the support they can get, so you telling others about them is really doing them a favor. cheers :)

Koga's previous band ended when they were refused a recording contract because as Koga was told, "no one wants to see a girl slap bass." Koga was ready to quit music, but her friend convinced her to keep playing and together the two gounded Gacharic Spin. Two players you need to check out are Babymetal, Daisuke Bohte is one of the great Japanese bassists, Rondo of Nightmare a song to check. And Kiyoshi, who may be the best bassist in Japan.

Gacharic Spin and their side project Doll$boxx (which features the lead singer from Unlucky Morpheus) has so many different musical flavors. The Drummer (Hana) you see is now, is currently playing guitar, and she and (Oreo) the Keyboard player do much of the singing in older videos, but the whole band can sing backup. The Bassist and the Guitarist are both very talented. You'll need flash cards to keep up with the line up changes. but in every iteration this band makes great music.

Although this song has a ton of twists and turns musically, in many ways this is the more conventional stylistic end of Gachapin. They rarely go full metal, but just about any other genre is fair game to them across their career. The drummer in this video Hana is actually the 2nd guitarist in the current lineup (aka. GS 5.0) having switched her primary instrument in 2019. For their self-titled album she pulled double duties, as their drummer Yuri was taking time away from the band on maternity leave. The latest album, 'W' only came out a few weeks ago, over the last couple of months they've released official MVs (for Replica & Kachi Kachi Yama) as well as live performances of four other new tracks from the album. If you want to see how their stuff translates to live I'd recommend Reverse Psychology or The Come Up Chapter, as they're tracks that are slightly heavier and show off two elements of their present sound that the Mindset video was missing, namely more of a dual guitar & triple vocal attack, on top of all their other existing strengths. Yuri has more of a bounce to her drum grooves, Hana hits through the drums more so her approach reminds me of Tommy Aldridge or the Appice brothers, which might be where that retro energy also encroached with Mindset.

Great reaction. My introduction to this band was the live version of "Mindset" and at the end I literally thought "WTF did I just listen to" with a big smile. GS is hard to pigeon hole since they can put a variety of music genres into their songwriting machine and what comes out is pure Gacharic Spin. I grew up with the rock gods such as Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Cream etc. but I also had exposure to soul, blues, R&B, jazz, etc. You are right about the solo reminding you of "jazz fusion". It was right out of the short-lived jazz-rock fusion that was popular in the 70's. Like you I was introduced to Japanese rock with Band-Maid and Lovebites but Gacharic Spin is definitely my favorite now since they aren't following a trend but are blazing their own path with great songwriting played by exceptionally talented musicians. Hopefully they get the international recognition that they deserve.

@@LowEndUniversity My favourite is a fancam version of Dawn 『DAWN』2019/04/20, which also shows of Miyu on bass well, it's worth checking out but obviously can have better sound since it's a fancam, really up close. An other great one to show his skill is off of their official channel ASTERISM - BLAZE (LIVE) [from Welcome to INFERNO vol.MAX]. A couple of other good ones are their (Live in Studio) tracks that were release 1 or 2 years ago, mainly Church, Gunfire and Then&Now, but all of them are great. There is plenty of bass playing to see in every track though since they are a 3-piece and Miyu (or Hal-ca on guitar) basically take on 2 jobs when the other is the lead instrument. A lot of these were recorded when they were in their teens, the bassist is currently 21, the guitarist 20 and the drummer 23, so they are still very young but even their early stuff online from when they were 13/14 was already impressive.

Gacharic Spin is a mystery bag when it comes to styles or genres. Rarely has the statement been so true that you just don't know what to expect, as with these ladies. And not only from song to song, but even within a single track. A nice example of this is surely their track/MV 'I wish I'. I promise you will have fun with this one. :) And I don't even want to start talking about the energy and presence they bring to the live stage. If you want to experience some of that, my recommendation is 'Tamashii' in the 2019 live version, which you can find on HMV5's channel, and directly following in the same video please the version titled "おもちゃの楽器でガチでバンド演奏してみた". You'll understand what I mean about them being a mystery bag. :) I'm still relatively new to GS myself, but boy have I learned to appreciate this band and their music. _____________________ _"Sometimes we laugh because we're sad or to hide our frustration"_ - from *Gacharic Spin* -「 I Wish I 」 🎶✨

Gacharic Spin is one of my favorite bands I've discovered. As you can see, they have a high level of musicianship and big personalities. Koga did an Instagram live with a translator where she just sat and talked with us. It was a lot of fun. She revealed that the "F" in her stage name stands for "pheromones," but she didn't know English well enough to know how pheromones was spelled. If I'm remembering correctly, the "Chopper" part is a tribute to someone else who used that in their stage name. Lastly, "Koga" is her actual family name/surname. She seems like a kind and lovely woman with a good sense of humor to go along with her immense amount of skill.

I love watching musicians react to Gacharic Spin, especially bass players. F Chopper Koga is incredible (they all are) as others have said you have to watch a live performance, I usually suggest Tamashii or Hunting Summer, you’ll be amazed. Here’s another band: Hanabie-We Love Sweets, trust me.

Michiko (F Chopper) Koga is sure to put a smile on any bassists face. She and Hana (drums here - now guitar) started Gachapin in 2009. After some changes they added Tomo-Zo (guitar) and Oreo Reona (keyboards) in 2012 and Hana was doing both drums and vocals (Oreo does a lot of vocals, and ALL of them can sing - except Koga who claims she is tone deaf as a singer). Recently Hana has moved more to guitar, and they added Yuri on drums and found new Vocalist Angie - who added a youthful energy to the band that is still in full force. The natural successor to this song would be *_I Wish I_* ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--R6Nrr_omjE.html - but there is LOTS to choose from in their 14 year history.

If memory serves, Koga and the drummer Hana knew eachother in highschool and when Gacharic Spin was coming together, Koga, the bandleader insisted on having Hana in the band. When they lost their initial vocalist, Armmy, Hana (who can play anything), continued on drums while also being the main vocalist. I think this was either the last album that someone else produced or the first one that GS self-produced. Definitely should check out their live performances. They are WILD.

GS started in 2009, with a lead singer called Armmy (Takae Ashitomi). They did a sort of highly technical punk-pop, but crossed genres a lot. They started to have friction between Armmy and the rest of the band, and then in early 2012 she left, officially for health reasons. She died in 2015; their work with her is very much worth seeing-here is an early one: “Setsunaku” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vfzIt20_xXg.html The girls were all just out of high school, and you can see they were already doing pretty advanced, technical stuff. When Armmy left, GS had tours lined up in both Japan and abroad for 2012, and needed a lead singer. For the Japan tour various singers (including Fuki) filled in for different shows, but they couldn’t find someone good enough who could also commit to the band full time For their overseas tour Hana (who was doing drums and vocals and was effectively the co-leader of the band) took the lead vocals on herself. She also happens to play several other instruments. Here is a live performance of their track Across The Now from a tiny venue in France (filmed as part of their 2012 overseas tour-this was Hana's first test at taking lead vocals whilst drumming): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_LnVAgqlE8g.html GS had had great chemistry with Fuki when she filled in for them, so while they were figuring out what to do with GS they contacted Fuki about doing a more metal project. This became Doll$Boxx. They wrote and recorded their first album at the end of 2012, then picked up GS again full time in 2013. This remains their main focus, and Fuki is busy with many projects including her main band Unlucky Morpheus, but they occasionally continue to perform together when their schedules permit. So Doll$Boxx can be considered a special project of GS. Regarding the genre of Gacharic Spin, it's pretty much impossible to pin it down to any one thing, although by and large they'd probably fall very roughly in the "pop rock" genre although they really just do whatever they want at any given time. You'll find everything in their back catalogue from metal and punk to electro, dance, pop and ballads. Most of their recent work merges multiple genres. In recent years, Gacharic Spin have added more personnel (a drummer, allowing Hana to focus on guitar and vocals, and dancers who also sing). Core personnel (these are also the members of Doll$Boxx along with Fuki): Hana (Hana Sano): vocals, drums, guitar, keytar, other instruments Tomo-Zo (Tomoko Midorikawa): lead guitar F-Chopper Koga (Michiko Koga): bass Oreo Reona (Reona Suzuki): keyboards, vocals All of them can sing and occasionally take on lead or backing vocals. Hana and Oreo also do metal growls in some songs. Several other performers have rotated in and out of GS. Currently they list Yuri as their drummer and Angelina doing dance and vocals. Here's a fun video of them performing their track Hunting Summer: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fWPyXZzeV3Y.html Oreo takes lead vocals on this and there's a fun dueling keyboard solo between her and one of the dancers. Here is Fantasy Medley, live, a medley of several of Tomo-zo's songs which are often named with a fantasy theme like Weekend Fantasy, Final Fantasy, etc: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HLoqx_6B3Tw.html Finally, one of their most recent official videos, a remarkable excursion through fusion, electro-pop, metal and funk with some symphonic keyboards thrown in. Very few bands have the technical chops to pull off anything like this. “Mindset” --You just watched this!

I like your style of reaction, or at least the one shown here, a lot. Gacharic spin are my second favourite Japanese band at the moment and you really need to check out 'I wish I' to get a feel for how broad their musicality is. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--R6Nrr_omjE.html Other bands you will appreciate are Asterism and Sokoninaru (My current favourites) if you can keep up with the art & math, both are mixed gender trios. If you do I would appreciate your insight on Fujiwara Misaki (Sokoninaru) 's tapping technique on the track I've linked here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CZ8aJPv616c.html & ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n7MyoBki9wk.html If doing a blind reaction with intent to play along you will need to break out your 7-string for Asterism I think its standard tuning B up. Fujiwara Misaki is a standard tuned 4 string. Thanx.

The track you linked to is 赤裸ライアー, or Sekira Liar. Sekira means 'naked', but I'm not 100% sure how to interpret 'naked' in this context - literally naked, shameless or exposed. I guess the gist is the same whichever you choose. It seems variations on shameless, such as barefaced, are most common amongst English speakers.

97.9hz by Suspended 4th has some of my favorite slap bass parts. There’s a lot of different slap techniques all mixed into one song. As a pick player, it’s the song that got me to start learning slap bass. Luckily because it’s such a hard song, especially as a first time slap player, it’s a lot easier playing most other slap songs that I try learning now. I’d suggest checking out the live play through by the band’s bassist. Edit: some extra info on the band, they blend a lot of music styles from classic rock, jazz, funk, punk, math rock just to name a few

Gacharic Spin is actually easy to catagorize: Excellently Controlled Chaos. They are who they are. If you get the chance, check out their side project group: Doll$Box. It's a bit older but just is good. They included Fuki (the blond) from Unlucky Morpheus. Gacharic Spin, more than any other group, usually makes me smile when listening to them. Except one of their acoustic songs about not giving up after a very horrible earthquake that hit Japan. The video has a blue tone to it. What you might find interesting is that Koga plays an acoustic bass guitar. If you read the lyrics and listen to their playing .... you'll need to tell people that you were cutting onions. I am a drummer and I am just as stunned at the immense talent of Japanese female drummers as you are about their bass players. It will be the Japanese who preserve and polish western music. Something that we aren't seeming to do.
