This is one of the best music gear review videos I've seen. Hit all the key points, has just the right level of tech detail, and the production was awesome. I have the MP-40 and it's at the heart of my bass rig for everything from church music to Rush covers. 🎸

IMHO this pedal is just inspired by the Tech 21 GED-2112, it is not a simplified / cheaper version of it. It can be a cool pedal but it don't deliver the possibilities and the sound of the original rack preamp wich has two DI output : one for clear and one for the overdrive.
This was great, thanks. Your take on this as a Guitar Player was interesting. By the end of the video I was convinced that you are a solid producer as well.
I struggled a bit with the messaging suggesting you can "get Geddy's tone"...We all know that's not possible...which is why I ventured away from that a bit but it is a great tool for shaping some gritty tones. I still enjoy it....

The bass you’re playing is a BB404. I regret selling mine - great instrument. I think it was $199. Killer tone and playing, and thanks for the spectrometer - I try to boost stuff between 1.5k and 2k, so the “tight” button does it for me and the YYZ shapeshifter isn’t worth the extra hundred bucks over the regular YYZ. Cheers!
@@LonelyRockerthe model number was on a sticker on the back of the headstock that had a tendency to fall off - mine did the exact same. But yeah, it’s a BB404. The BBN4 you mentioned in another comment had soapbar pickups rather than jazz pickups. Again, cool bass, great playing, and thanks for saving me a hundred bucks!

@@LonelyRocker I send an email because they don't talk anymore about cabsim in some sansamp. But they say that every SansAmp are like the name to got without an amp live or to record. So it start from the amp to the cabinet. And for the limited version they make a different one but they wouldn't tell me what they use to do it (cab, mic,...). And what I really like about those is that they make them in the way that you can go direct with it it work correctly (not too fuzzy or DI sounding) but you can use another cabsim after it or an amp with your cabinet and that work too ! it will not be too dark and bass remain there
Listerning to the solo tracks on you tube, I don't find these things sounds anything like his tone. He used an old altec preamp to overdrive an ampeg .. that's where the distortion came in ... just enough clipping to get some natural compression happening. Look elsewhere on youtube where people are using the ancient Altec preamp and it will be pretty obvious. They're nearly impossible to find. The EQ on that preamp was pretty important too in shaping the sound.
I believed I qualified that in the video. Radically different bass and I don’t have his fingers or approach. I actually made a little “fun” about referencing his tone. The pedal is a good start if you don’t have all of that great old gear he used.
Thanks so much! And really? There are no markings on the bass. It was offered to some employees at a music shop in Toronto in the late 90s. One of the guys who worked for me for a short time was going to pawn it. So I took it off his hands. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it ever since but never had any idea what it was. Thanks for the insight!

Thanks!! I really enjoyed doing this one. I 'THINK" I did have the tight switch on but the shape shifter off. I forgot to note that when I shot it and then figured I'd keep people guessing a little bit. The tight switch really does tighten the bottom end up if you want more of a mid range growl. But if you want a warmer sounding bass it's better to let that bottom end through and tighten it up in mox...hope that helps!!!
I'm certain this was developed with his Ricky and Jazz in mind. But as you can see I played neither. So you customize it to your bass. You're not guaranteed to get Geddy's tone with any bass but you have a great tone shaping tool here to find Geddy influenced sounds...

Thank you for the video. As others have said, great level of detail and enjoyed your playing. I was bummed the MP40 went so fast, gone before i knew it was available. I'm very curious about the cabling and use of the spectrum analyzer... what were you using to generate the pink noise, and what was the app/plugin for analysis?
Thanks so much! Yeah it was a short run. I was lucky to get one. As for the test I used 2 computers. Running logic on my laptop I used the tone generator plugin to generate pink noise. I took the output from the interface into the input of the pedal. The output of the pedal went to the input on my interface for my desktop computer. The analyzer is Voxengo Span Plus. And I used video editing to blend the before and after. Hope that helps!

They are both VERY similar. I grabbed the MP40 version because it's a limited edition and looks a little cooler in my opinion. It also has the 2 additional features which gives you even more options. That's the main reason I chose it...but the YYZ version is good too...
Please forgive me. I don't mean this as destructive criticism but constructive criticism. I am sure most Geddy Lee fans would agree with me. Us Rush fans are a Rabbid bunch. Anyone trying to talk about Geddy Lee's tone has to have (and play) a Rickenbacker 4001. We'd let you go with a 4003 with the vintage tone circuit. Most of what Rush fans go way back with the band. 90% of Geddy's sound from 75 to 82 (their most influential years) was done with his Rickenbackers. Yes, starting in 80 with Permanent Waves going through Moving Pictures and into Signals Geddy started to include his 72 Jazz bass. However on all 3 of those albums, the Rickenbacker sounded it's best! From Freewill, Jacob's Ladder and Natural Science to Red Barchetta, The Camera Eye and Vital Signs to Subdivisions, Analog Kid, Digital Man and Countdown were all Rickenbacker classics! And last but not least, all of Exit Stage Left except for YYZ was all Rickenbacker power. You can't talk about his sound without using a Ricky and just using a jazz.
I don’t disagree with you. I’m a rabid fan myself. But I will add to what you said. To really get his tone you need his fingers. I also made a point to show non-Geddy tones too. It’s a great pedal and he does use the rack version of it. So it’s very much a cool pedal that fans can enjoy.
@johnglynhughes4239 Every Rickenbacker I own runs a Badass 1 bridge including the 4080/12. I only veer off when it comes to the strings. Since the son took over Rotosound, their strings and customer service started to suffer and suck. I have too many basses. I now give my business to DR Hi Beams. I've never got a bad string with them. Nor did I ever get an attitude from DR like I did from Rotosound. I'll never give them another cent.
