Geddy Lee talks about his Signature SansAmp, the GED-2112 with Andrew Barta (president, inventor of the SansAmp and designer of all things Tech 21). For more details on the GED-2112, click here: www.tech21nyc.com/products/san...
I think the video stopped there for obvious reasons. He must’ve told this guy, don’t tell me how to play to demo the 2112’s sounds. Go watch a RU-vid demo if you want that don’t waste my time!
I think he knows it's a running gag. He did a bit on tobogganing on TV a few years back when he said "small children and people who worry about their brains should always wear a helmet" while wearing a toque, and the last step is getting your roadie to run the toboggan back up the hill. 🤣
Geddy bought his first Ricky after checking mine out when I was playing in T.O. with The Paupers. Obviously, I went on to great fame and success, while poor Geddy disappeared into the mists of time.
@@smashdalde9713 Eh, his P-Bass tone on the first record was pretty epic and punchy. I think I would have enjoyed his bass playing just as well either way.
@spray of laughing rapids, Neil, you sure about that? Neil's a introvert he very rarely talks to anyone. He won’t do meet and greets and absolutely hates when fans approach him or even say hi. Neil is one of the greatest drummers ever. But nice guy, not to much? So, I don't know how you got this impression of him.
the secret is the ghost notes, not the notes. Some musicians don't pay attention to it. But Geddy uses his nails... for those whose nails are short or weak, the only choice is to use picks
Geddy has always been such an envelope pusher, along with Alex and Neil. Incredible band, thanks for 40 years of great music that raised the bar for everyone else!
Radium-224 A Rush fan knows that Ged doesn’t do soft. His bass is so amazing. So many phenomenal bass tracks coming from him for over 40 years. 2 examples, so strong, “Leave That Thing Alone & Driven. Two of my personal faves but then again, I think every Rush song is simply phenomenal. The ONLY band for me.
Tell me about it!! I was hoping he’d break into “Leave That Thing Alone” or “Main Monkey Business”. It’s okay, just watching him & hearing him talk is good enough for me!! Now, grab up Alex & go make some more noise!! I need my Rush!! 😃❤️❤️❤️
“Let’s hear some soft picking ok”? and ged says “ I don’t do soft picking “and right after those words are spoken, Andrew utters “ I know ”. Priceless!
@@trenken He was a hack guitar player that thought he will just take that to bass....the guy is all over the place and forgot the job of nailing down the bottom end
@@hubcap4KHDRgameplay You speak like a person with a lot of limitations. Both players have mastered their craft you just have to be open enough to see it.
@@j.juarez9526 Not so....I just believe Popomatic players, and those wishing to play lead should not be classified as bass players. Has he mastered the craft of being a lead guitar player using a bass....sure !....but he gave up a lot doing that. I made a living at being a bass player.....not so many limitations.
Sanson101 the more you play an instrument, you gain appreciation for the nuances and refined sounds that don’t come easy. Geddy makes it look easy. C’mon, you try.
@@Sanson101 Most people hear his bass playing in the context of Rush songs. If you don't like his bass playing in Rush tunes then you won't find it appealing.
psychicPancake 「ーーー」 who's bassline was he playing?
6 лет назад
psychicPancake 「ーーー」 - Geddy is among the gods of bass guitar. Another in the ranks is Steve Harris, who is the reason I picked up my first bass back in 1983.
3 complete nerds writing and playing great music amd rocking it to the max. Love it. You can see him having this in his hotel room suitcase and thinking that is normal. Legend. Thank you Glee.
The guys at Tech21 are awesome! I blew out my SansAmp pedal back in the 90s and they were in the same famous music building I frequented. I brought it in and they fixed it for me no charge. Thanks guys, I'm a lifetime customer!
OMG the tone for Limelight!!! Ive been trying all kinds of things and cant seem to get that GROWL. Especially as the bass comes in at the beginning. Its like "yeah, here I am". It is sooo good.
The Ged Man is working on a book of his collection of Vintage Bass's due around December 2018....can't wait to see this project! RUSH RULES....the rest can only drool
Jason McNamara--- Jason man...i did not know this...AWESOME! You've had exchanges with Both Geddy and Alex....mark those off your Bucket List to be sure! Hope all is well in Japan for you and your Crew Mate! Left a note on a recent video of yours. Trying to catch up to some RU-vid myself! Cheers Bruddah Man
Lisa Harrison--- Awesome on the preorder!! November can't get fast enough!! I too miss The Boys as well. I cut Biology Class back in April of "75.....Buddy of mine said I simply had to hear "Fly By Night" album....BEST DETENTION EVER.....LOL....Rush was instantly my #1 from that moment! Obviously I have loved a ton of other acts...but RUSH is FAMILY to me so that say's it all! Cheers Lisa
Been listening to them since mid eighties and was crushed when Neil finally had to retire. So having other forms of creations from my three favorite musicians is exciting.
Geddy lee will always be one of my biggest influences along with phil lesh, les claypool, and geezer butler and cliff burton!!! THANK YOU GEDDY FOR BEING SO CREATIVE AND HUMBLE!!! YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!!
Most regular folks can't even come close to realizing how genius this guy is!!! They can't fathom how amazingly talented Gary Lee Weinrib actually is!!! The most musically inclined person on the planet!!!
Geddy, you’re awesome. You seem like a regular dude, until you choose to switch guitarsand have your private guitar handler select one instantly for you. Your Hard work and commitment to your craft inspires me to one day become closer to being one of “the men who hold high places” like yourself.
Man, I'd LOVE to have that pre-CBS, custom-colored Dakota Red stack-knob Jazz Bass, that's hanging on the wall, over his left shoulder. If it's an original, that's some big bucks right there. I currently own an all-original '61 Jazz Bass, in sunburst, which was by far, the most common color of these basses. And, yes. I still gig with mine on occasion, and use it in the studio on a regular basis.
Well done Geddy.... I will be adding this to my list for Christmas, miss you guys so so much..... All the memories.... Can't wait to get your book,... So looking forward to more ..... anything that includes that bass playing... all the years waiting for new material, this is such an odd period in time. Thanks for all the inspiration through the last 34 years for myself. Like so many others i started playing bass after hearing you. Hope to see you soon.
At 3:23 and beyond, is it my imagination or is Geddy plucking/picking "Roundabout" with his index finger only? Side issue: For all the viewers/listeners born after the 90's...prior to that time, there was no way to have such an awesome and intimate an interview with such an amazing a musician as this man. This interview feels like I have been invited to Ged's house and he gave me ten minutes of jamming time!!
Geddy never uses a pick. He gets such an attack from just his fingers! I remember an interview with him a while back... He broke the tip of his middle finger on his right hand, and the nail grew back with a hard ridge. He basically has a natural pick growing out of him. Kinda like Wolverine. They ARE both Canadian... 🤔 Hmmmm
Geddy is so reflected when he say something...like,he always tries to be the most honest possible,he explains things very precisely...this box is amazing.it covers EVERYTHING .the whole spectrum of frequencies, without sounding boxed at all.almost analog if its possible.Geddy summed it up in a great way saying: the only thing missing is my imagination.that says all about what he really think of this device.
Ya that was awesome. I would love to see Geddy do some bass lessons like Alex does on guitar. Or I could even just watch Geddy play bass alone for hours :) Any who I have one of these and I love it.
Love the way Tech 21 reinvented itself, big fan of the sansamp gear, had a Tri-AC and a Trademark 120 and the tone was always superb, been itching for a fly rig as a backup you can stash in your gig bag.
Boy, how I would like to spend a day in that room to play all those fantastic basses from Geddy’s magnificent collection. (His Big Beautiful Book of bass is a true gem) He’s one of my greatest bass heroes and i’ve been a Rush fan since the early days. I always liked him as person as well. An easy going, humble, intelligent guy who loves music and lives for it! I hope he may enjoy a long happy life with his friends and family but also hope for new music from his fingers.
ahhhh *gasp* this is unbelievable! Andrew Barta speaking with Geddy Lee! Wow Im starstruck to be honest, years ago I discovered Tech21 and was fascinated by your designs and what you've done for bass players and guitar players all over the world providing sound and gear, Wow this is so cool
I love mine! I always loved the Geddy sound, but this takes that sound and adds what I want to accomplish and I got what I've always wanted! I either run it directly through my board and through the monitors, run it through a small mixer on, and run it through my bass amp (zeroed out), or I simply run it through a power amp through my cabs. Ta da! I love it! My compliment is a VT bass that I use when I'm not using the GED. AWESOME!!
If your bass amp has an effects loop, run the SansAmp into the Effects Return. That should send the signal straight to the power section of the amp and bypass the amp's EQ.
Thomas Axel B similar thing for John Bonham. Drummers try and recreate his drum sound but you can't really. It was in his playing not simply how a drum is tuned.
Im a happy owner of tech 21 bass driver and liverpool pedal, i never be disapointed by the product of Andrew Barta and he's company, thank !!! You made my guitar and bass playing life easyier, this and the Q Strip could be my next buy.
I wonder what it would sound like if I coupled the Geddy 2112 Sansamp with the Q strip and had three channels going ( Q-strip, and then the drive and deep from the GED 2112) in the studio?
I absolutely love my Geddy Lee Signature edition, I have finally found my own sound. I too play with fingers and I attack notes like a sledge hammer. Geddy Lee is my inspiration... He's the most beautiful person on the Planet Earth...
Tech 21 and Geddy are epic. Great stuff. If I were a bass player I would have one of these. I am going to buy the guitar fly rig just because tech 21s stuff is really good.
Tech 21 products are great. I have had a trademark 60 with an extension cabinet for @15 years. Great sound, dependable, awesome effects loop, and its lightweight.
@@chris_bern My Favorite Headache was released in 2000. I bet Alex and Geddy go back and forth to each other's houses and have demo songs already made. I can only hope.
Man if owning that bass and the 2112 made me play like him!!! But alas it’s not so. I played on a jazz bass back in the 80s and he was my inspiration . I wrote rush tunes, played rush tunes, listened to rush tunes. Good times!! Ty mr Lee!!
I’ve been using the SansAmp RPM for a studio preamp on occasion and it’s really flexible. I like mixing the two channels clean and dirty for a few things, but even on clean tracks it lets the top end cut through and pop out while leaving a track unaffected. I use a compressor and amp sim on the XLR out, and usually an ampeg 4x10 cab sim. Even when recording direct, I often assign two tracks, one for bump, and one for bite.
The GED-2112 is brilliant! I just bought one, and I'll be using it in my live rig, which consists of a Crest CA9 stereo power amp and a pair of Mesa Powerhouse 212s. I've been playing live since the early 80s and I've always used a clean tone, my variation of John Paul Jones' Led Zeppelin bass tone with zero effects pedals. I've always admired John Entwistle, Chris Squire, and Geddy Lee for their unique sounds, with a bit of "grind" on top, but each also had/has a solid low end going on, and I could never figure out how I could do that live, without running two separate amps. In in my setup's case, I'd have to use 2 different preamps, simultaneously, one providing clean, and the other providing a bit of crunch. The GED-2112 allows me to have crunch and clean from a single rackspace. I wish Andrew and Geddy would've developed this 10 years ago! It's absolutely genius. Thank you Tech 21!!!
Ok fine....I will buy one....geez. haha. Love that tone. I currently play a geddy Lee bass through a GK and didn't think I could possible make that awesome sound any better. Nothing lost in trying though.
As a mix engineer I gotta say we love to have a Sansamp crunch combined with a 2nd channel of pure clean di (no crunch) but have the channels crossover at like 230hz or so. (Clean di is 230 and below, and crunch is 230 and above). This device is literally that in one box and even has separate outputs! This device must be the best bass di you could possibly have.
in the late 1970s, I used to have an old bassman amp like the one in the left hand corner, and I loved how a 6 string sounded out of it. I wonder what happened to that amp....I wonder what happened in general
Chris Squire played a jazz bass on some songs on going for the one. I also believe he played an old p-bass on some songs from time and a word. No matter what he played people always seemed to think it was a Rick.
The Telecaster bass - basically a reissue of the original Precision - is all over Time And A Word and The Yes Album. Chris modified it for stereo output like his Rick so it certainly sounds similar, but it's fatter, a bit more raw.
