Basset hounds are one of the most popular breeds of dogs in the United States. The reasons why they are so loved is because of their even-tempered nature, their laid-back approach to life, and the overall calmness that they bring to the family. You will have a loyal companion who is ready to go on some adventures with you when this breed is part of your life. Many owners say that they would never go back to a different type of dog after their companionship experience.
These dogs have a big personality that everyone in your family will enjoy. Their long body, floppy ears, and sense of humor makes them the perfect choice for homes with children. Their lifestyle preference can also lead to issues with obesity later on in life, and many Basset hounds refuse to listen to their owners if they start tracking something that they find to be interesting.
If you are thinking about adding a new member to your family, then the pros and cons of Basset hounds are worth reviewing because you’ll get to see if this fun breed meshes well with the personalities that are already present in the home.

The only con of having a Basset: They don’t live forever. Once I went Basset I’m never going back to life without one ♥️

Basset Hounds require a LOT of attention. This video is somewhat misleading, in saying that they aren’t high maintenance dogs. They absolutely are. That being said, they’re worth it all! My Basset, Sassy, is so precious, and I literally can’t imagine life without her!

A Basset is the most amazing dog you can have. He has a personality of his own, very clever and a will of his own. Keep you fridge locked, they are very loveable and like a child in the house🥴😄👌

I had a basset hound name Rappunzel that could open anything. One time at a BBQ, I was told by my brother that she was opening the ice chest and stealing hot dogs. But she was smart. She only took one at a time so we wouldn’t notice. She would run up to the gate and open and unlatch it to let the mail lady in. I really miss her.

Basset hound are my most favorite dogs of all. It makes me sad to watch the dog shows every year and never see a basset hound win. They are the greatest with children a very low maintenance animal and full of love and food they are a hound they love food they love eating food and licking it off of their favorite human. They have great conversations with their human moaning and groaning and carrying on about everything and anything that went on in their day while you were gone all day. In my opinion a happy house is a hound house 💖

I love Bassett hounds and currently have two. Contrary to this video, bassets are very companion oriented… highly recommend two so he/she has a bud.

I am one of those that will probably not go back to another breed. I had a rescue basset and my friend had a cocker spaniel. The two were inseparable and they were the funniest two dogs I have ever known. When the cocker spaniel died Molly the Basset would not even look at another dog for the rest of her life. I had no idea I could care for an animal the way I cared for Molly. I recommend them to any family with kids, or simply someone who enjoys life, the basset will be there for you. As long as you like naps.

Every dog even within their own breed has their own personality..I had two Bassetts Sammy and Dewy. Sammy was full of energy was fast as a gray hound! Loved to fluff his covers and bury his treats in the yard and sometimes within his covers! He would run hard and if he heard something going on thru the woods he would bark endlessly if I didn't entervinne but also slept hard and loved a nap most anytime. Sammy had a very dominant personality was very lovable and yes loved food! Now Dewy was quite the opposite he was very laid back. Dewy loved to lounge the day away and when he did go outside he never walked to far and would lounge in the grass sunning himself he took his time with anything he did very sweet and lovable but the main thing the two had in common was stubbornness! If they didn't want a bath (Sammy would disappear to the backyard)🤣 and Dewy would press all his weight into the floor so I would always have to tote them to the bathroom which wasn't easy or if your walking them on a leash well Sammy would sit and stare at me if I wanted him to go a different way then he wanted to go 🤣but they are the most lovable wonderful dogs ever❤

My basset is so stubborn that when i don't go the way he wants, he will be taking off his collar. Even in the middle of the street. Also he can be moody. You can clearly see his disappointment when something doesn't go his way 😂 And he can lay down in the middle of the room (or bed) to nap, even if it makes us difficult to not step on him. He does it to secure everyone + to be the center of attention. But he will never ever bite on purpose. He likes using his teeth but he's extra careful while playing. And he's cuddly and loves giving kisses. And he's a couch potato 100%. Despite his back problems he can live in apartments if he has enough activity outside. Also not only that he loves eating, but he's also a fast-eater + bassets are prone to have some kind of condition that can make them feel nauseous if they are overactive right after eating, so try to have a time between his eating and a walk. + people love giving him attention. they often ask about his red eyes, and they think he's older than he actually is.

Do they tend to bark a lot? I live in an apartment and have thought about getting one for awhile now. This video concerns me about barking.
@lupompidou9550
@lupompidou9550 2 года назад
@@rakiajohnson4460 They are protective so they bark/growl at guests, and quite loudly but they stop rather quickly. They are friendly to them and want to secure them. And they might bark when they want to go for a walk. They're quiet when left alone (might bark at first at a young age), and they sleep a lot so they don't bark all the time.

I have a beagle basset hound mix and she does not like other dogs at all. She immediately try’s to establish dominance and in some cases has tried to attack when the other dog doesn’t like it. Any tips? I did start out socializing her, but she has ALWAYS been like this. Never like other dogs, even as a puppy. Also will not respond to training now. She’s 2 years old.

🩵🩵🩵These dogs are just TOO CUTE🩵🩵🩵, on that note.... can these dogs tolerate Extreme heat if one was to live In say thailand or another HOT Asian country? Even if they only go out 30 mins per day? And or if they are out in 90+ degrees but in the shade how will they do? Thanks

Cons, they take up half of the bed and refuse to move over.

Had Bassets for 25 years and really do not recognise some of the Pros in this video Bassets are NOT easy to train they are stubborn and if you get a vocal one then you will have issues with neighbours. I would also question the amount of exercise even my laziest bassett liked nearly 1h walk twice a day and they two i have at the moment are out 3h most days, these are not always long walks as if they decide the are in a sniffy mood just get used to the fact you might take an hour and go hardly anywhere. Also the health issues there tend to be two types of Basset in my opinion the one who never gets anything wrong apart from an upset tummy and the one with everything wrong costing hundred a month in medication for life (both from very reputable breeders). Bassets are awesome dogs but they are stubborn monsters when they want to be just please look more than just this video - some good advice here but also some very questionable advice.

I've had 10 Basset Hounds over the last forty years, don't go by this video as a guide to the breed. It gets some things right, but much wrong. They are wonderful pets, but stubborn and need lots of attention; I wouldn't want any other breed.

Don't forget lots and lots of treats and anything I can snag off the kitchen counter when no one is looking. It was that pesky cat that ate it

As someone with a great deal of experience with the breed how practical do you think it would be to have a Bassett be an outside only dog?
@TXMEDRGR
@TXMEDRGR 2 года назад
@@Jayhawk92 I can't imagine doing that to any dog. All my dogs have been like part of the family and very attached. No dog should be shut out, especially in bad weather.
@Jayhawk92
@Jayhawk92 2 года назад
@@TXMEDRGR well the dog would get played with every day multiple times as well as have another dog with it at all times. My fiancee has an outdoor golden retriever, and I want a Bassett hound so I was curious how one might do. I've had both inside and outside dogs in my life, but she's only had outside dogs
@TXMEDRGR
@TXMEDRGR 2 года назад
@@Jayhawk92 I think a dog closer in size to the Golden Retriever would do better, both for play and if conflict should occur. Bassets have delicate backs and don't do well with rough play.
