Only for D, when I release the whisper key it immediately just to octave. It seems my D above staff don't need flicking at all?

How come clarinets can do this. I play it and I do it all the time. By very lightly pressing the register key (which brings the note up by 12 steps or something).

All woodwind instruments have methods for changing register, but it is not always called 'flicking'. Bassoon has more keys and fingering options than most woodwinds, so having this technique in the bassoonist toolbox is particularly valuable. ♫
