Thank you for your excellent video on installing the tub overflow and drain assembly. I have a house that was built in 1908. It was leaking around the overflow. I did not know that the hundred and something year old rubber gasket had decay and water was dripping into the area below my house, which is all dirt although over many times I’ve taken deep baths and letting it overflow thinking it was going down the sewer, I did fine interesting Grand Canyon kind of working their way underneath the house I don’t really have the access that you have. I’ll have to tear the wall apart behind the overflow there by the wall at least I have access to that. It is inside the hot water so it’ll be messy, but it’ll be a little easier , I’ll need somebody under the house to properly guide the plumbing to the drain hole of the It’s an adventure, isn’t it?

The manufacturers of the cable operated drain assemblies all suggest that you make sure that you have an access panel from the adjacent wall so that the cable drain can be serviced. This is an obvious indication that the cable mechanisms are not dependable and prone to failure.

There is a gap between the drain opening in the tub support and the opening on the actual tub on this particular model. Water can work its way up the threads and through that gap. I wonder if this install ended up leaking because sealant wasn't pushed into that gap.

How do plumbers install a drain that’s set in a concrete slab? Are there “standard “ measurements that they use?

yes during rough in we put the trap in and stub out where the tub is supposed to be according to the prints

This installation is not much use to the average homeowner who is remodeling their bathroom. Plumbers working on new construction are the only ones likely to have that kind of access to the rear of the tub from the wall behind before any drywall surfaces are installed in the adjacent room. Even with careful measurements, the trick is to align the bathtub drain and the bathtub overflow when the tub is fully enclosed by the alcove. Show that!
@lachcik5084
@lachcik5084 Год назад
if its q second floor bathtub youll have to cut out the ceiling below. they make kits that you dont need to cut
@chrisgraham2904
@chrisgraham2904 Год назад
@@kimloy8019 My point was, there are a number of ways to replace a tub and hook up the drain and overflow when there is little access, because the enclosure is fully closed in and tiled. No need to open the wall in the next room, or the ceiling of the room below the bathroom or perform the associated repairs with those processes. If your remodeling a basement bathroom, accessing from a ceiling below is not an option. I've only installed or renovated about 300 bathrooms.

Thats what i came to this video expecting too, how to install with limited access (i cant access from underneath). Those videos are ither mislabled (thus why they seem non-existent) or just no one does top-only installs :(
@chrisgraham2904
@chrisgraham2904 5 месяцев назад
@ I was able to complete the top-only installation without any access from below, or behind the water supply and drain side of the tub. I was able to find a premium drain & overflow assembly that has a flexible copper gooseneck style of drain overflow, which made alignment much easier. It cost about $60 more than the standard assembly, but probably saved hours of trial and error attempts.

Silicone on a rubber crush seal. I laughed when I heard, "I like to... ." Maybe you should follow the manufacturer's instructions and quote them? How many wood chips and Silicone (hybrid) is needed for a good seal? My wife watched your video and told me I was doing it wrong, but I was following the instructions on the box.😂

Why do you need to cut a huge hole. Seems like a good way for mice and drafts and stuff to get in. Isn't there a better way to do that?
@j8ke937
@j8ke937 3 года назад
Don't use a slip ring trap system. Don't use 1-1/4". Use a solvent weld system. These slip ring systems work loose especially if you ever have to snake a clog in the line. That tub is getting scratched the more you work in it uncovered.

Doesn’t that drain kit seem kinda cheap? Thin wall 1.25” adjustable PVC? Not saying you need the brass but why not do a full 1.5” or 2” PVC?

Leave the silicone at home. Rubber on the bottom side, plumber's putty on the top and screw in until tight.
@rynolda

Petroleum based plumbers putty will mess the finish and leak. Manufacturer specifically says not to use plumbers putty. Dab 3.0 or loctite pl heavy duty sealant is necessary.

@TerranceCurious
@TerranceCurious 4 года назад
The previous so called plastic leak comment was most likely the use of compression style fittings INSIDE A WALL! HUGE NO NO! NO NO NO! Plumbing code doesnt allow compression style DWV inside walls.....If the inspector did pass it? It's because the owner/installer met needs of the inspector...Maybe a readily installed access panel to serve the fixture and or inspection....you'll never see a small leak in a wall until Mold and Mildew kick in...wood rotting.....electrolysis for some steel frame builds....etc.....and trust me! I don't care if it came with the tub! It's wrong! And unprofessional! Pros measure offsets! Glue it once! Set for 40+ years! Let's see CI pipe outlast PVC in a wall!
@sladeoriginal

Now show me how to during a reno when. The walls are all still in place.

Btw, I only made a comment as I've been doing this long enough not to have to Revert to University of RU-vid, however? When my Millenial apprentice seeks a Jedis advice about why we dont use compression fittings because it's easier and faster...I have to sit there and Mentor my young Padawon about why He will Never Use those fittings in a wall on any of My jobs! EVER! I'm not dogging the Video...He may have been specifically directed by the owner to do so! He seems to know and work his hands as if he has mechanical skills...unlike my young Padawan Millenial apprentice! My apprentice litterally looks like a monkey F-ing a football! But were getting him to a Jedi! 4 more years to go if the Kid lasts! Right on! Aloha and Mahalo! Be safe!

This use case is not for a DIY'er. "New Construction", (I would question if this installer is following best practices... I bet many will unsubsribe after watching this video). A DIY use case would be "Replacing an existing tube and tie'ing in the new drain kit to and existing drain line... as in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RoB3ziqk0oI.html.

Spend $30 more for a brass drain. Previous owner installed one of these cheapie plastic kits and it is leaking badly. Good video otherwise.
@TerranceCurious
@TerranceCurious 4 года назад
Cheapie doesnt beat the Pro's....and FYI! Most county Tap water systems have minerals....you will have electrolysis @ the brass fitting...From Atomic 26...aka Fe...google it....just that little bit of glossy water left over @ the drain a daily used shower.....will have pitting and degrading depending on water source....I know...been doing this awhile....so when you call things cheap? I have to question? The knowledge of understanding Materials for the project...If fire was of concern? All means brass and CI tub for sure...but depends on the installation and being transparent with the Customer and or Knowledgeable in the type of craft you pursue my friend! Aloha! Just trying to have you see things in not a cheapie way...
