Welcome to Single Race Mode, where every now and again, we'll go for a race and a chat.
With the arrival of the 2024 Bathurst 12 Hour at Mount Panorama Circuit, I decided to do a time-accelerated recreation in Assetto Corsa Competizione.
Today's topics while I fly around Mount Panorama: sim racing's barriers to entry, ACC's slightly overprotective players, and a mini-review of the PS4 version of ACC from a relative newcomer.

Such a lovely series and great to see you discovering other racing games! Kinda motivates me to give ACC another try.

Thanks very much Robin! Yeah I've really enjoyed finally trying out ACC a bit more, approaching from an offline single player perspective, and while flawed it's a lot of fun.

I was half expecting this to be a 12 hour video

I've finally succumbed to clickbait titles, I apologise. 😂 Each year I try this, I'll up the distance and one year I will do the full 12 hours.

Just to add to the whole simracing stuff and trying to get away from it: I've had a conversation, with someone who shall not be named, which was affirming and helped me a ton to get away from chasing the dream of being good at simracing. I'm now really on a good way to enjoy NR2003 (and other games) just for racing without having to proove anything to essentially nobody. I also feel like I'm at a point where I finally got away from forcing myself to make content out of it if I'm not enjoying it. Does that make sense? Tldr: Play racing games for the fun, nobody who is a sensible person will tell you at what AI difficulty you should play and what times you have to run.

Makes total sense and I agree with that approach. And I also used to worry about what difficulty I was playing a game on for fear of "condemnation" but you're right, no sensible human would criticise that except to be a gatekeeper or a bit of a knob.

24min timeprogression races are the best! On PS4 I used project cars2 to do this, so many interesting track and car combos from all Motorsport era’s. It opened up a whole new world to me, I used to only know and care about F1.

Project Cars 2 is another game I bought and played briefly before leaving it behind. Definitely need to revisit as I barely scratched the surface of it! Didn't even know there was time progression in the game!

@@TheOutsideLine it’s the prettiest I’ve seen! I’ve read that even the stars you see are matched exactly with the night sky of your chosen time and place!

That's an incredible bit of detail. Oh yeah, that settles it, I definitely need to go back and mess around with it.

All right, I shall follow along and comment on stuff I hear: *That's kind of the sad part of progress, you really need to be able to upgrade your equipment, otherwise you won't be able to run newer games. I have what IS a potato, a 2005 office PC with an integrated card. I know that I won't be able to run anything newer than ... (thinks) ... 2007 or so. This is a fact simply because games have evolved. If there's a positive is that there is a host of older games that will run under ancient equipment, NR2003, NT2004, F1 Challenge. Are those the ideal gateway to sim racing? Probably no, but at least there's an option back here for potato owners. Still, game devs seem to take pride in making games have higher and higher requirements. *Grand Prix 4 comes up clutch when it comes to explaining setups, as they had an actual race engineer record videos to explain what most of the setup did (no love for differentials) and had a section explaining on text what the setup did. Nice touch from Microprose. Sadly (at least to me) there's people that's not interesting in learning setups, which to me is the most interesting part of race weekends, the actual race aside. Also, I'm trying to mentally communicate to Video Ash to take it easier on the car. *Ah, the sim racing elites. Anyway, Time Acceleration was a feature of games like F1 Challenge, GTR2, Race 07, you know, sims of their time . The games did punish you if you skip sessions, because that sim engine is kinda glitchy, but time accelerating those sessions keeps AI times fairly believable. I don't get the point of defending the lack of a feature. And yes, I do approve Commodity & Accessability over Ultimate Realism, because the first has no real downsides and can be made to not detract from the second thanks to the power of OPTIONS™. *Minecraft quality ACC videos when? *That's a lot of controls alright. And like you mentioned it is a lot easier when you have a keyboard with as many keys as you want instead of a controller or wheel with a much more limited set of keys to use. They could have used some old-timey "Alternative function" buttons, a button that altered what other buttons did. *You mentioned LeMans. We all know what this means. LeMans 24 Hours PS2 edition coming soon, right? *Nicely done on the race ... barring the occasional pinball moments. Nice job.

We are very lucky that some of the best sims ever made are from an era that have decent graphics but can also run on even low end modern PCs. It does soften the blow of not being able to play the modern titles because between NR2003, Race 07, GTR2, F1C, GP4... you're pretty well catered for! I still need to try GP4. It's on the list! This is very true, time acceleration isn't a fancy, new, simcade only feature! Agree 100% with your point about accessibility vs. realism. If Minecraft ACC is what the people want... 😂 Yeah that would've been a decent solution to get around it. Oh hell yeah, more Le Mans PS2 on the way soon! Thanks very much! 🙏🏼
