I doubt the Punisher would have risked millions of lives to avoid killing someone, as Batman did here. Yes, in hindsight, Batman made the right call. In the moment, however, he acted recklessly and with little regard for innocent lives. He literally put millions of people at risk of death so he could avoid breaking his one rule. He never should have taken on that responsibility. Hawk Girl would have done the right thing and used the device. Batman was only vindicated because Waller's prediction did not come true. He was saved by plot armor. Again.

@@thetruth45678That's why Batman is a better character than the Punisher in my opinion, even if innocent lives are at risk, he won't kill, he will always look for another way, it may seem stupid, but that's what makes Batman special as character. In a story, the logical choice is not always the best narratively, sometimes emotion is the right choice.

Batman did not display compassion here. He displayed a reckless diregard for life. Waller said that when Ace dies, the psychic backlash could kill everyone within miles of her powers. That one line undermines this entire scene. Batman didn't save Ace. He saved his own conscious. She was already a lost cause, but the people in the city were not. He should have never taken on that responsibility, and all of his peers who know him well should have seen this coming. Batman does not kill, but he will risk lives to avoid killing. Hawk Girl should not have let him be the one to go. She would have done the right thing and used the device.

@thetruth45678 You kinda have a twisted definition on what is "right" here. Using the device on Ace would have ended her, correct? So if Batman did use it, the damage would still happen. The best way to avoid all that was to get Ace to fix reality while she was alive.

I'm fairly certain that Ace was a dog that Joker had trained and made it fight to the death with other dogs that were marked with card suits and numbers. Ace was marked with the ace of clubs, hence the name and was the only surviving dog. Batman took pity on him and both he and Alfred spent months retraining him, eventually making him into the Batdog. Edit: Just realized this was only a plot line in the "DC Rebirth" series, multiple timelines make origins muddy lol

It's a contrarian reaction some men have to cruelty that is directed to themselves on a personal level. My father is the worst person I know on an emotional and social level. Which is why I'm known amongst my peers for my kindness and thoughtfulness when I interact with them on a daily basis (self-conceited admission but I call it like it is)

Simple fact of the matter is many people learn who they want to be by seeing who they don't want to be. My dad wasn't abusive to me or my sister not a physical guy or even a verbal guy.....he was just broken. People seem to forget Gen X really was the first broken generation of latchkey kids. My dad grew up rough on the streets of milwaukee in the 70's had a drunkbfor a mom who hid him and his siblings away from his father who was a very nice genuine man. He grew up fending for himself and being selfish. He left my mom for another woman and then tried to come back but it was one affair to many for my mom. I became man of the house at 18 trying to help mom and put myself through college. I had a deep dark pit of hate inaide me for many years. Wasn't until i had to fly to wisconsin to put my father in the ground that i let it go. He loved us i have no doubt but he was raised by an alchoholic cheater and he had some of that cheater in him. Needless to say my wife has nothing to worry about in that department, and my children will always get the attention they need from me. Its easy to beat on our parents and some are truly monsterous with no redeeming qualities......but many of them were damaged goods from the start especially fathers because they had their fathers ripped away from them themselves so they don't know how to be one.

To me: This is the standard of any creator who wants to create a great Batman. A good Batman is someone with awesome fight scenes and gadgets. But a *great* Batman is one who is the comforting presence to a stranger who is scared, alone and has lost their way. Be it someone who struggles in rehabilitation, someone who needs to be airlifted to safety…or a child in her final moments. Many creators only think of Batman as “Vengeance.” But sometimes they forget there is more to Kevin’s famous line: “I am Vengeance. I am The Knight! I! Am! *Batman* !”
@Avarn388
@Avarn388 8 месяцев назад
This moment always stood out to me as a child and even now as an adult why Batman matters as a hero. It's easy for recent incarnations to lean into the depression and hard-core element of Batman but Batman at the end of the day is a person, a guy trying to make the world a better place. He was also a man robbed of a childhood. Bruce had to grow up faster than normal children and in turn committed to his goal to make sure no other kid looses their lives to a gun or violence. That's why this scene for me hits so hard. Ace is a child and like Bruce was robbed of her childhood with her powers and the government experiments. And worse, she's dying as a result. She doesn't deserve anything lofty like power, money or glory. All Ace wanted was someone who give her comfort, accept her for who she was. Bruce did that in her final moments. She wasn't a weapon but a scared child. Conroy's performance here was stellar in that you can tell Bruce flashed back to crime alley and his parents' death and in turn could do nothing about it. Hence, he did the only thing he could do as a hero, a person; give a dying child comfort. When you consider the fact Bruce would name his dog Ace in Batman Beyond, it adds so much meaning to this scene in how much he cared. Batman does care and has a heart. There's a reason why he doesn't kill. Killing is the easy path; the path that led him to loosing his parents. Protecting people is hard but it is the right path. The right path in that it builds inner strength, conviction. Something I find is lacking nowadays in most people.

The animated series is the platinum standard I hold all Batmen up to. Whether that be comics, games, movies, tv, hell even fanfiction, this is who I expect when I see Batman. He is and will forever be my favorite superhero. Thank you Kevin Conroy and all the writers and animators who made this very special version of a character so beloved by many. There will never be another Batman like yours.

Now this is a true Batman. Someone who will be there for you in your final moments, will understand & care for you. This must've been devastating for him. Watching this scene all of these years later still leaves me with tears. But it's a bit comforting knowing she at least didn't leave earth alone, but rather with the caring hand of Batman.

This is where Batman's true and greatest power comes in, his humanity. He identified with Ace, but that's not the sole reason why he chose to stand by her. She was the victim, a child with no childhood, the government was to blame for what she was doing, this is why he stood there until she peacefully passed away. And Mr. Kevin Conroy delivered us one the most emotional scenes ever written!

That “I’m scared…” is a punch in the heart. No child should ever feel this way, especially in their last days. Batman comforting Ace on that swing set says everything about Batman’s character. This is who he should be.

This is why I love Batman. This is where we got to see Batman’s greatest skill that makes him a hero: his humanity. When the world saw Ace as a weapon, he saw nothing more than a reflection of himself. He saw a child who got robbed of their childhood by criminals, the very thing that led to Bruce Wayne becoming Batman. Batman never wants to hurt, let alone kill his enemies, he just wants to save them from themselves. Beneath that mask, Batman is a human being who’s hurt and doesn’t want anyone to hurt the way he’s had to. That’s why Ace only allowed Batman to get close to her because he’s the only one who understood what she was going through. This is what the legacy of Batman is all about. This is the Batman that Kevin Conroy left us with. RIP Kevin Conroy ❤

And that’s why Batman will always be the greatest. Everyone was ready to take her out like she was a weapon or a monster. But Batman saw for what she really was, scared lonely child who has been robbed of her life. She may have died, but she at least went peacefully with someone who actually cared for her and her suffering. She died knowing that there are some good people out there.
