Honestly that whole Morrison bat run is great fun, full of cool ideas and great art all throughout. Love the inversion in this series of Damien/Robin being grim and dark and Nightwing being the relatively light hearted contrast.

Morrison’s run on Bat books is amazing. The whole thing starts with introduction of Damien, a little monster who becomes the best Robin of them all by the end. The artwork has highs and lows, but the story is an absolute winner.

@@terrydactyl2077 I’m sure must’ve planned it like that to some extent. Damien’s development is a main through-line for his whole run. I really enjoyed growing to like him over the course of the series. The bit towards the end where he tells Dick that they were the best is really great moment in comics. My only disappointment with this series was that they spoiled the ending on the news on tv before the issue came out...

The writing of Damien was a masterclass in character progression, literally went from a character you couldn't hate more to fan favourite.

Quitely draws digitally, prints blueline, and "inks" in pencil. However, his layouts are drawn traditionally, and are works of art in their own right. They are so detailed. He's one of those artists who puts most of his effort in the planning, composing and staging, rather than in the finished polished look. One of the very best artists

My favourite batman era. Ingenious dynamic of a witty batman and a no-bullshit robin I believe the red car the guy with the flaming head drives is the very same red car that was batman's first batmobile.

"comics is so broken" I was watching the new comics tropes video about Jason Aaron's Thor run and when he got to the part where he explained the reading order if you wanted to read it was INSANE.

Fraser Irving, at one point, drew some of the later issues, and he did a fantastic job as well. One of the few instances where painted comics really resonated with me. His Joker renditions had a strong/mesmerizing presence.

Yeah, he did the final arc for Batman and Robin. Last 3 issues I think? I believe they were 3 issue arcs in this series.

Your boy Philip Tan took over pencilling chores for 3 issues after this. Morrison’s RIP Batman run before this was great especially the issues with JH Williams III. Great vid as always

21:18 to me this is a great little detail, look at the 3rd panel on the right page, the door is drawn in clean lines, except for the area around the lock, where there would be some wear, he draws with that squiggly line

The contrast between the super clean line and the squiggly grimy line is part of what I think makes Quitely art really pop

Frazer Irving did some spectacular issues on this run too!! (13 to 15 I think) Those definitely don't look like mainstream comics (in a great way)

Hey Ed, the thing that came to mind when you mention the Arzach page and the splash page. When I was in school my design teacher stressed "Variety with inconspicuous unity" as a core tenet of good design. Tangents and overlaps help lead the eye through the piece and is a prime example of that design rule.

20:11 I think this page also weirdly creates a De Luca effect even though it is 3 distinct objects, it's easy to imagine the motion from the flying batmoblile, and it's easy to image that a moment before Robin was in a similar to pose to what Batman is in, and the next moment Batman will be diving down the way Robin is. I can clearly imagine the motion of them leaping from the batmoble gliding for a moment with their capes spread and then diving down one after the other.

Ed, Damian does get killed horribly, but he does have a great arc before that, and since it's comics, he's back. Also in the next story Jason Todd comes back and has a phone poll to kill Batman and Robin.

"...try to make a Robin that's more unlikable than Jason Todd..." nailed it, although I did like the juxtaposition in this of having a super serious Robin and a more light hearted Batman, I think it was a fun idea

FWIW, overlap to create depth is a choice I think the artist makes for whatever purpose, whatever result. Proportions smaller/larger gives you some sense of distance, overlap even moreso, fading to blue etc, but creating depth is not always the objective. In the Arzach example (great video you guys did) I think it was to create a sense of pattern - the impact of even spacing achieves another effect - more graphic. Black shapes placed evenly against the negative space - they definitely pop. I don't prefer it, but I do think that's another way of doin things and might have interesting effects. Maybe somebody pointed this out, idk. Anyway, great vid dudes - thank you.

Morrison chronicled what happened to Bruce Wayne through Batman RIP and Final Crisis. Even as a die-hard Morrison fan, I really didn't care for his Batman run.
