This is so cool...
In this video Grant breaks down Batman's fighting style. Both how Batman might approach martial arts and the styles he would use, and how this has been approximated in the major movies and games over the years.
Batman is a depicted as an extremely accomplished martial artist in the comics, but bringing that to screen in a realistic manner has always been a challenge. See the logic behind those creative choices, and how Batman's fighting style evolved with the technology available.
Want to see a Batman-themed martial arts training program from Grant (I do!). Let us know in the comments below! And be sure to check his channel for lots more martial arts training advice, diet, lifestyle, and more.

The secret is to yell those words when you land your strike. Nothing quite like getting punched in the face by a guy yelling “THWACK!!” before they tackle you to the ground with a “Thud!!” and knock you out with a “Pow!”

As someone who is both a martial artist and batman fan I have tried to pick styles based on realism and sometimes think...what would batman do lol. I started in karate as a kid and became frustrated at the lack of realism in it. When I later returned to martial arts as a young adult I started doing mma, but soon realised that doing an mma class was too jack of all trades master of none. They are more add on classes designed to teach you his to tie together the specific skills you should already be well versed in. So I moved to muay Thai (for kicks, punches, knees and elbows and seeing how effective it was in mma that it became the dominant choice of striking style) I also often could see Bruce Wayne training in Thailand in muay Thai and muay boran. The other style I picked was traditional Japanese jujitsu. As it focused heavily on locks, pain compliance, and judo throws and weapons training(as judo came out of traditional jujitsu). At the time I started security and though many people in security often refer to aikido for locks, having done a few aikido classes I was extremely disappointed at the lack of realism and ultimately moved to traditional jujitsu where aikido, like judo came out of it. I have since then wished that I would gave done hapkido instead of traditional jujitsu as it encompasses all the locks from traditional jujitsu as well as the judo throws while also combining takewondo and having an emphasis on live sparring. I have since found that my biggest issue is dealing with punches. Training in muay Thai has given me great kicks and dealing with fighting at long range but now I have moved to boxing to focus on that and fix the issue by Woking on footwork with boxing angels and getting used to dealing with punches in close quarters. I did move to judo for a few years to due to realising the lack of live wrestling in traditional jujitsu as traditional jujitsu has become nothing than more then demonstratation and choreography. And I have again since moved from judo to no-gi bjj to get away from the GI and move as close to realism as possible. So now doing no-gi bjj and boxing I think my joyney has led me as far away from the fantasy to realism as I can get. In short based on my 10+ years of martial arts training and being a massive batman nerd, if I was to pick styles to most closely resemble Batman's fighting style and experience while being realistic and time efficient in training to fight ready as fast as possible I would pick boxing as a base, muay Thai for the kicks, elbows and knees (muay boran for Head buts) no-gi bjj for the wrestling, throws and takedowns plus takedown defence and learning to get back to your feet as fast as possible (although I feel Bruce being American he would have done wrestling instead) and for weapons, locks and traditional aspects while having those martial arts that cover the region of Japan and south Korea I would add hapkido.

I feel like for a Batman style character trying to hone his fighting skills should focus on 3 major categories, striking/ grappling and weapons. With that being said a strong foundation of either boxing or Muay Thai should be focused on to defend and attack opponents from different ranges as well as footwork and stance. A lot of people would say bjj for grappling and I don’t disagree 100% however bjj strictly relies on GROUND fighting, u would never really wanna be on the ground unless there’s a ref around. Bjj is a very useful art because if u do find yourself on the floor having a good background in bjj will definitely fall to your benefit, however I think prioritizing judo would be more beneficial because that whole art is focused on bringing your opponent to the ground using his energy against him. Judo moves pulled off right could potentially end a fight right there in its tracks. And finally for weapons kali/eskrima, this would leave said “Batman training figure” with an overall benefit in knowing how to attack and defend with edged and blunt weapons found everywhere in the world. Plus kali(fma) also has a good empty hand section of the arts that should really be taken seriously especially if someone has trained in it heavy and used it in the real world. Thanks hope this could spark some discussion

Being a geek especially when it comes to Batman, love the deep dive into his fitness, fighting style and how they play into each other. Nolan in Batman Begins used the choppy action sequence to focus on the chaos he reeked from the criminal POV and the role fear plays into Batman's strategy. That is why his training fights and fights after establishing his reputation were not as hard to follow. I'm guessing Nolan was trying also to focus on the use of psychology in Batman's strategy. Use scary theatrical ambushes to get the criminals to huddle together for protection then drop in staying too close with Keysi for them to effectively use the gun's range especially since Nolan's Batman was unafraid to use opponents as human shields. Check out Behind the Mask: Rise of Leslie Vernon since Batman also relies on fear to direct his opponents into traps, ambushes and make them panic into dumb decisions. A strategy you overlooked in the later Arkham games. I loved hanging someone upside down then glide kick into a vicious beatdown when everyone came to look. Bats still needed the gymnastics and fancy kicks to close the distance once the ones with guns got some distance to shoot when the brutes and shields became numerous. Never underestimate psychological warfare even in small doses

I think you should definitely do a Batman combat/martial art training program based on almost every list of disciplines he has worked on! Like how or what should we start with, how could we learn so fast with each and every one of these forms if it were possible, and could we still learn many of the disciplines that Batman uses (not even like 127 of course) while practical as it can ever get? But maybe it doesn't have to be just Batman, maybe you could make the same video with other characters like Daredevil, Green Arrow and Zorro (one of his inspirations, of course).
