I love this movie. This movie is basically Tim Burton unleashed. Because even though I love the 89 Batman movie, it's not a PURE Tim Burton movie. The craziness and insanity of Batman Returns is what makes me LOVE this movie. Yeah some scenes are a little too much, but it's the best sequel out of the first four Batman movies in my opinion. Also like what Chris said, Burton's Gotham City around Christmas time is absolutely GORGEOUS!
WB: We are so sorry for your circumstances Zack.. we will finish your film.. *waves at sad Zack Snyder until he's gone* WB: ALRIGHT EVERYONE ! WE HAVE A TON OF WORK TO DO ! SOMEONE GET JOSS WHEDON ON THE PHONE TO REWRITE THE SCRIPT ! DANNY ! DO THE SCORE ! COME ON PEOPLE !"
Pfeiffer's Catwoman still shines as one of the best written, best acted versions of the character, utterly pulsating with raw sexual appeal that every other actress just pales in comparison. She is definitive.
Call me crazy, but I really like Batman Returns. I might understand why certain people don't like it, but I really like it. I grew up watching it a lot. To me, it's the most underrated (live-action) Batman movie. Penguin, played by Danny DeVito, and Catwoman, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, are mostly picture-perfect. Christopher Walken was even enjoyable. Fun fact: Paul Reubens, aka Pee-Wee Herman, who played Penguin's dad in Batman Returns, appeared in the Gotham TV show on FOX as Penguin's dad. I thought it was quite a nice way to tie that around.
I might be wrong, but I always thought that the penguin grew up with the circus. So that’s how he learned how to speak. Yeah the penguins found him but he was basically raised in the circus. Or at least that’s what I got from Batman researching his background
I still remember my Mum and Dad not letting me watch it until I was older because of the Catwoman face stab/ Penguin nose bite 😂 Awesome video as always!
Just to point out, when I was younger, I was taken away with the visuals and story telling but as adult, I finally paid attention to the plot and is really good. It was only as an adult that I finally realized that the Penguin was found and raised in a Circus where he was known as aquatic boy, and that he started making crimes against children while in the circus and the circus performers are now a criminal gang under the Penguin's command. I also understood the sexual innuendos of Catwoman and the Penguin. And the fact that Walken and another actor were in a boat with actress Natalie Wood and she "fell" overboard. The plot is darker once I focused on the dialogue where as a kid the visuals amazed me out of the actual plot points.
Fun fact: Both Tim Burton and Michael Keaton actually prefer this movie over the original, feeling the original was too slow and boring at times. I agree. I think this is my fav Batman movie and is extremely underrated.
I find both movies to be raimi tier lol on par with raimis Spider-Man movies. I can’t see anyone else as live action Batman part from keaton. He’s such a great actor man
I didn't know Keaton felt the same way. I can definitely see why Burton didn't like the first film. That first Batman movie was closer to Richard Donner.
I love the dark take in this film and on the characters. I actually prefer Burton’s versions of Catwoman and The Penguin, as they’re a lot more layered and a lot more interesting than their comparatively ordinary counterparts.
The best thing about this movie is not just that the villains are dark and evil, but that they are DELIGHTFULLY dark and evil. In both of Burton's films, all of the villains and their henchmen appear to be having the time of their lives, smiling and laughing and practically bursting with enthusiasm. Many people would say that this makes them goofy and impossible to take seriously; I argue that, in a way, portraying the bad guys as entertaining actually makes the film darker. If you're gleeful about killing people, you're going to not just horrify them but morally outrage them - and that's the point! I always argue that in any good "Batman" movie, Batman should be dark but his enemies should be "funny-dark." Showing Batman as a serious-minded person makes him all the more sympathetic, but in a way it also distances us from him; we end up rooting for the villains, at least for a while, and this element makes the films all the more subversive and twisted. I love the fact that Batman isn't for kids anymore, but people misunderstand WHY he's not for kids. These movies are not for "true" adults; they're for adults with the minds of "dirty" kids.
The fight scene of Batman vs the red triangle gang is the example of the badass street fighting style of combat. And as it’s quite cool of the merchandise marketing of the film, but man the film was much more dark. Speaking of fight choreography, I can’t wait for Chris’s new video of Batman forever which I will comment on Val kilmer’s Batman is the first live action Batman to have a martial arts choreographed combat.
I think it is the best Batman tbh but I really like how bales batsy doesn’t actually kill. Batman is a superhuman but the closest iteration we got of a superhuman batman is Affleck
@@3CFilms First off: Super amazing to hear that you replied to me. 😃 Second: Well, I think that the story (one of the most important parts of the movie) ain't perfect, but it's thankfully saved by the passion that was put into this.
How could anyone hate Batman Returns? It's amazing Danny Davito is legendary as Penguin, Michelle Pfeiffers Catwoman was definitely one of my biggest celebrity crushes as a kid, then you have Christopher Walken along with pure Tim Burton chaos, everything about it is great it's one of the best Batman movies in my opinion it's just so much fun.
This era of Tim Burton is without a doubt my favorite. Also, there is a continuation of Burton and Keatons Batman in the form of comics. I haven’t read any of them but it’s pretty cool to see some ideas they didn’t get to do done on the page. Like seeing Billy Dee Williams become Two-Face like they originally planned.
The 1989 and 1992 Batman movies were great. My parents got me a Hot Wheels Batmobile for Christmas that year. (it was very hard to find) Then in summer of 1993, 6-flags Astroworld in Houston TX, opened Batman the Escape. It was a fun standup coaster. Batman is one of the best heroes. I grew up watchin Batman the animated series too
I didn’t care for Batman Returns. It was a Tim Burton movie, not a Batman movie. It was about the Penguin, not Batman. It was literally a repeat of Edward Scissorhands with the Penguin
I didn’t care for Batman Returns. It wasn’t even about Batman. It was a Tim Burton movie, it was literally a repeat of Edward Scissorhands with the Penguin. Batman Forever was better
Man I absolutely love how you review the movies that came before in anticipation for a new/new version of one like the Batman, Spider-Man ect. I look forward to these every time we get closer to a new release and I can’t thank you enough bro! By far my favorite RU-vidr.
I enjoy this movie and like what the final product is, but I can't help but imagine what this movie could've been like if WB put some restraints on Tim Burton and we got another Batman 1989 style Batman movie that wasn't so insane and weird, and if that would've kept this franchise going and what other villains we could've seen in Tim Burton's style. P.S the score for this film is phenomenal, listen to the track 'birth of a penguin part 1' its so good
@@3CFilms If you’re making a movie, and your main concern is how much money you can make off toys, instead of the quality of the film, I don’t feel sorry for you Warner Bros. Here’s a question, would Batman Returns be rated R today?
My favorite Batman movie. I walked two miles as a 10 year old on Saturday June 20th 1992. Unfortunately I walked in when the Penguin says “gotta fly!” It was a double feature with Lethal Weapon 3, so we stayed through and got to watch it in its entirety again. Core Memory right there.
@@snoopyspoofy8334 🥱🥱🥱🙄🙄🙄 Ok, bud! Good for you! But I didn’t love it ok! SORRY 🤷♂️ So I’m sure you loved that it wasn’t a Batman movie, and it was a rehash of Edward Scissorhands
I feel like Tim Burton’s universe should get a chance to continue…even though he’s going to be in The Flash, there should be an animated film or two to conclude Michael Keaton’s Batman arc
@@captainbeastwinger4940 His arc of becoming an actual hero than a psycho defined by revenge. If you re-watch the films, Batman doesn’t kill until he realizes that Joker killed his parents. Then, he can’t stop; he’s sort of in that place he warned Jason Todd of in Under The Red Hood. You could make the assumption that Michael Keaton’s Batman isn’t affected by the people he kills, but it’s because he believes it’s too late for him. That’s why the finale of BR is him trying to keep Selina from becoming what he is. The original script of Batman Forever touched on Batman moving on from the death he’s caused. The scene where he talks to Robin about revenge in the BatCave? That’s from his own experience. But, then he kills Two-Face, which is one of the reasons Batman Forever doesn’t work that well. But the original idea was a great sequel to Burton’s films that continued his arc. Keaton’s Batman should get a chance to finish that arc.
Well actually he killed 5 people in the film before he killed joker but their deaths were all post Bruce finding out joker killed his parents so he was probably full of vengeance right then and there and ready to kill anybody to get to joker.
The studio wanted Tim Burton to change his vision, but he decided to quit cause if he couldn’t make it the way he wanted to make it, then he decided to not do it
That's not what happened. For Batman Returns, Tim wasn't all that interested in coming back but WB desperately wanted him back due to the first film's success. They managed to get him onboard by giving him full creative control. The movie then released and there was a parental backlash due to the sexual references and perceived, increased darkness. The Happy Meal toys-tie in was cancelled by McDonald's as a result. Tim was actually interested in doing a third one. He went into the studio and put forth some ideas he had. Then, surrounded by WB executives, one said around half an hour into the meeting, "Tim... don't you want to do a smaller movie, now?". Tim responded with, "You don't want me to come back, do you?". They then said, "No! No! No! No!". But Tim said he can take a hint, and that's where negotiations ended. It's at 28:06 in this documentary - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JKMSKvJncf4.html&ab_channel=WarnerBros.Entertainment
@@ajscarecraft5560 But I think the main thing that comes through in that conversation is that they just wanted Tim to not direct anymore, period, and when it gets down to it, they weren't going to allow it, one way or another, regardless of what he decided.
In the Batman vs TMNT movie, The Penguin has these same type of umbrellas. This movie scared me in parts when I was a kid which made the movie that much better
This one is a childhood favorite of mines. This version of Batman as well as the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies were my introduction to superhero movies.
Batman returns had a lot of dark humor and dirty jokes that I never noticed until I started rewatching it recently guess I was too busy enjoying the film. 😂
I will always love this Burton sequel. This feels like the epitome of Burton, just so grimy & gritty. The cast is amazing too, from Pfeiffer, to Walken, to DeVito. Just awesome!
Burgess Meredith was reached out to about playing Penguins father, which eventually went to Paul Rubens, in the beginning but his health was declining at the time. That would have been incredible
Love this movie. That little kid on that talk show was a little wimp. This movie isn't for wimps. Great art is risky and bold. Batman Returns is great art.
I wouldn't say this is the one WB regrets making, that'll go to either Batman and Robin or Batman Forever most likely Batman & Robin. But that I remember watching of this film I liked it, it's uncomfortable at times but that was Tim Burton's style with Batman
Yeah Defiantly I don’t think wb regrets “Batman forever”because that movie at the time did really well for them and outgross returns(I think it was the top grossing movie in 1995)
@@3CFilms Batman Returns wasn’t a Batman movie, it was a Tim Burton movie. It was literally a repeat of Edward Scissorhands with the Penguin. It was about the Penguin, not Batman. Batman Forever was better actually. It actually focused on Bruce Wayne, unlike Batman Returns did
Interview kid: It was very violent, & it was an attack against kids. Me: huh. Also I can see a kid saying it was violent, but the part of “attack against kids” had to have been a line fed to him.
You probably know this since you showed a screen shot of it in the last review, but DC has continued the Keatonverse in comic form and have introduced the Marlon version of Robin recently. Great video as always man 👍
I like you reference the character Shrek from the Shrek movies. But there was an actor named Max Shreck and he’s best known for playing the first ever onscreen Vampire in Nosferatu
Batman returns is surprisingly my favorite Batman movie from the OG films however it’s a little dark for kids I remember watching it as kid and I was like dang blood, suicide, sex, drugs
I know I'm days late, but even as a younger fan of comic book movies (I'm 16) this film has always stuck with me. I remember just watching this on loop with Batman '89 when I was younger. I always dreamed of it snowing here in San Antonio, Texas like it did in Gotham. It is criminally underated with the likes of Captain America The First Avenger, Man of Steel, Superman II and it's predecessor Batman '89 in my opinion.
The toys, the cups, the Happy Meals, they all still came out. McDonald's pulled the TV ads and that was it. That didnt stop anything. I ran this movie at the drive in as the projectionist back then and it's awesome!
Devito's character was nor raised by penguins, the movie mentions at some point that he was shown as a freak in a circus as a kid, the penguins most likely just taking out of the water and they were part of the cirus itself. That's why all the Penguins goons are circus-related like clowns and malabarists.
They were a little late on canceling those Happy Meal toys because some of us did manage to get some while they were still available. I had three out of four, which was pretty much the norm for me back then (Batski, Batmobile and Catmobile, Penguin' in his duck car has eluded me to this day) and I had one of the cups (in fact, I may still have it). It's to bad that Burton's Batman sequel was controversial enough to eliminate the possibility of him finishing the trilogy (more screen time of Batman killing bad guys and some 'very' suggestive moments with Selena/Catwoman) because I would rather have seen him make Batman Forever than Joel Schmumacher (R.I.P.), but we will get more into that next time.
All I've ever wanted again in a batman film is a Gotham like tim burtons. His takes you away from the real world and you get submerged literally into a live comic book. Hope Gotham at least looks somewhat similar in The Batman, or has a different architecture from the Nolan films. Funny how back then they complained about the darkness of this movie yet now that's what they need lol.
I know the penguins discovered him(the penguin)as a baby but Batman does do some rare detective work in this movie and we do find out he grew up and was raise in the circus(the red triangle gang) who were connected to missing children cases
I have an interesting story with this movie. My mom was 10 when this movie came out. My grandmother(Who hates everything that's dark, or horror related) took my mom and her three sisters to go see this movie in the theater. They walked out 5 minutes later. I never understood why until I saw this movie for the first time. Yeah understand why Ronald McDonald pulled out on that deal with WB. Sheesh
Batman Returns and The Dark Knight are still my 2 favorite Batman films of all time. The 89 was alright but I loved Returns way more, watched it hundreds of times and it never gets old. Didnt know some people disliked it, thats news to me
This is one of my favorite Superhero movies. It truly is such a dark fairytale and has some amazingly beautiful moments. I find this film extremely underrated when ranking Batman movies and personally its my favorite Batman movie.
The first Batman movie was good, yes. It was the best Batman movie. But Batman Returns? No. It wasn’t even about Batman, it was about the Penguin. It was literally a repeat of Edward Scissorhands with the Penguin.
… Batman Forever was better than Batman Returns. I know that’s a very unpopular opinion, but that’s what I think. Batman Forever was a nice refreshing change
About how Penguin learns to speak and interact with people, I'm pretty sure later in the movie Bruce Wayne does some research and finds a mention of an "aquatic bird boy" in the circus, so presumably that's Penguin and the the Red Triangle Gang?
I imagine what tim burton would’ve done with the other villains… Two face was deformed when he was born so he has two faces The riddler holds up a riddle card or something Scarecrow was raised by humanoid scarecrows Robin has to act like a robin
Even though it's not very comic accurate I still enjoyed the world Tim Burton created. In fact it was actually my favorite Batman film growing up. Seeing this in comparison to "The Batman" reminds me just how far we've come. Also, as a side note I loved the fact Paul Reubens reprised his role as Penguin's father in Gotham. (albeit in a separate universe)
Absolutely love both Burton films, upon rewatching all the Batman films before The Batman, I found this one to be the best of the 1989-late 90’s run. This film was everything I love about Tim Burton turned up to eleven, on steroids. “Teach her my French Flipper Trick.” - The Penguin. I believe that’s all I need to say.
Saw it as a 12-Year-old-Kid in the Cinema and it defined me forever as a big Batman-Nerd - still my Fav-Batman-Movie. Michelle Pfeiffer's Performance is for Ages.
