My grandmother took me to see Batman Returns when I was 7 years old. It was one of the coolest and most lasting film experiences of my entire life. I will never forget it.
I am a few years older and I remember it on par with any of the other things in my, might i say quite remarkable, life. Being dropped off at the theater with my two friends. The lines. The "bat logo" carved into peoples hairstyles. The costumes and themed shirts and hats Movies were a much bigger event back then. They were a happening. I remember Godzilla a few years later not for the film but the absolute madness of hype. But Batman lived up to it and surpassed it's hype
That's awesome! I was also 7 yrs old. My mom wouldn't take me to see it. She heard that it was too dark & too violent, so she wouldn't take me. So my grandmother took me instead! Hehehe RIP Grandma
My bros. Do you remember the vhs case of Jurassic Park? The one that looked like a stone. Titanic was released at midnight at the videostore and it was an release party for it. And I live in a small town in sweden.
Danny Elfman’s score in this film was unreal. Maybe my favorite score of all time. Also I wish they’d bring back Burton and give Pfieffer’s Catwoman the Logan treatment.
Batman Returns is a masterpiece! Saw it in the theater as a kid and still gives goosebumps from the opening and fantastic ending. So memorable, we won't get another one like this.
Same story, ı was 7 when i fırst saw it in the theatre (in France). The music of Danny Elfman, the ambiance, every detail has its reason to be. Truly a masterpiece.
@@anthonygordon9483 It's debateable whether or not any mothers had actually complained at all. What is more likely is that certain TV companies had deliberately made an issue out of it in order to generate viewing figures for themselves.
The production design in the first two Batman movies were second to none. They need to go back to actually designing out Gotham instead of just flying out to New York or Chicago.
What do you mean, "just flying to Chicago"? Why does it sound so dismissive when shooting on the real locations is well known for being more time consuming, dangerous (if we're talking action scenes), and unpredictable. Shooting a city with mate paintings and miniatures is nowhere near as complex as doing it for real. Sound stages were the green screen before the green screen. A real location will always be appreciated by real fans of cinema.
I mean... yes, he's an actor that had to embody a character, & that naturally comes, in some part, from sympathizing w/them. It's a part of the process. That said, the character's name in the film is Ozwald Cobblepot. He's rarely referenced as "The Penguin" & especially not by himself?
That movie is a true work of art. There's never been another comic book movie in that style. The design of the costumes are still incredible to this day. That cowl is an amazing sculpture. Love it
I like how frank and honest these interviews are. Talking about the ridiculousness of wearing superhero suits, studio pressure, toy sales, mixed audience reception. Really makes these making of videos entertaining and real. Once the filmmakers are away from press junket and dvd bonus feature mode they can really open up and discuss. Even when they are admitting to faults of the film.
This for me has always been the best Batman movie and it's a great tragedy Tim wasn't allowed to make more. The two we got after that were like a slap in the face.
@@paul111287 From everything I've read, Tim was up for making a third movie but the studio wasn't keen on his dark take on the genre as it made it difficult to merchandise. There had already been unhappy conservative types with the previous movies toys being marketed to kids by McDonald's. They discouraged Tim from making another and brought in Schumacher to make a more "toyetic" version.
Thanks for uploading the entire docu! Saw it as a child back in 1992, enjoyed it but with mixed feelings - the marketing with the merchandise/toy line misrepresented it - this isn't a kid's film. Burton went full-on dark gothic with morally ambiguous villains. They're complex and sympathetic, which is a much harder sell to children, who just want the valiant hero to beat up the baddies. This was ahead of it's time, it'd be so much better received today!
You’re right, it isn’t for kids at all. Overall I like the film even if I have some mixed feelings on it, but I do appreciate Burton taking a blockbuster superhero film in that direction. Even to this day there’s nothing quite like Burton’s Bat-flicks. The animated series is the closest in tone to the 89 film but that’s about it.
@@jalenjohnson1662 I literally watched this when i was 5 five and i thought that this was the greatest movie ever. I still consider it the greatest batman movie of all times and one of my favorite movies of all times. And the animated series are the best :D animation that was ever created.
I still do not understand why this movie had so mixed reviews. To this date it is my favorite Batman. The gothic style, the amazing score and the fact that none of the characters is exactly normal, all of them have their own dualities and nightmares. The movie resultet as a guilty pleasure
Because it was darker & different than the 1st one. I guess you didn't watch the doc before commenting. Besides it's considered one of the best superhero films of all time by critics today. Time has revealed it to be a turning point & an influence on many superhero films that followed.
It's so refreshing to hear what the filmmakers & actors *actually think* when they're removed from pushing the theatrical/home video release: that it's silly to wear the costume, addressing negative response to the movie, execs didn't like Burton's vision and wasn't asked to return. Great job!
I love how Tim says they basically politely told him they didn’t want him back and then that producer in the next interview basically confirms that. Lol
I still remember being 5 and obsessed with these two Batman films. Replaying and replaying the VHS. And, as a lot of people, wanting a third one. But hey, "never say never".
Keatons Batman and Reeves Superman are my absolute favorite representations on screen. I may have seen the Dark Knight trilogy and Man of Steel first but those guys... they are always my favorites
Burton's Batman movies were less comic book films and more dark fairytales. From the set design, to the music to the actors... if just one of those elements are removed/changed, none of it works. These movies are magical.
My aunt took me and my sister to see Batman Returns when I was 7 years old. I loved it. To me it didn't matter if it was dark or weird. It was Batman, Catwoman, and the Penguin in another Batman movie, and for me that's all I needed to know. I had a lot of the toys and remember the McDonald's promotion. What a fun time to be a kid.
What about the kids that watch things from before they were born? You know, like most people. I’ve never met anyone, even kids, that only watch movies that were made after they were born. That’s ludicrous. I’m 21 and these are the movies I grew up with. And the Christopher Reeve Superman movies. Superman II is my favorite Supes movie. And by the way it’s Reeve not Reeves. George Reeves is a different Superman actor.
Even if younger people aren't aware of the older comic book movies, the influence is still there. Even though Captain America existed for a long time, the way Chris Evans plays him probably wouldn't be the same without Christopher Reeve's Superman performance.
@@Hallinilla9 except a very large amount of them are aware. That’s like saying that because you weren’t alive in 1954 you’re not aware of the first Godzilla movie, Gojira. People are aware of the first Godzilla movie. People watch movies from before they were born.
@@AustinNGrayson Emphasis on "Kids" name one kid who you know between 10 - 18 who even mentions Christopher Reeve (and yes I meant to put an apostrophe by Reeves' in the main comment). Most will name Henry Cavill as Superman and Bale as Batman. These old school films are not as sacred as they once were and are highly under appreciated when you have CGI fests that make up the films today. You really aren't understanding the just of my comment. What you're not understanding is that these films paved the way for the later films. Most people don't even know the name Adam West let alone that he was one of the more notable Batman figures. Are you a "Kid of today" being 21? Understand my comment first then formulate a better structured reply
Batman and Batman Returns to me, will always stand on their own as the the two single greatest Batman movies in the universe. They have the total package. The dark, smokey mood of what I always saw Batman stories as. And the villains were beautifully dysfunctional and so interesting. Can you imagine if we had gotten a third movie with the same team? No question, the trilogy would stand head and shoulders as the true definition of a proper Batman series! As it is now, these two movies do the same. But have always felt like they are missing that third and final piece... If I had a time machine, I would go back and make the third one happen!
"Hey, why don't you make this a Tim Burton movie" "Oh okay, fine I'll make it" *Makes Tim movie* * le Studio and mothers big mad* Tim never returned for the third movie
My mom wouldn't take me to see it. She heard that it was too dark & too violent, so she wouldn't take me. So my grandmother took me instead! Hehehe RIP Grandma
Batman/Batman Returns are two incredible films so cemented in with my childhood memories that it’s difficult to understand why so many people don’t like it.
She said what a dream to have casted the penguin and the Catwoman in one movie I beg to differ, because characters of that caliber deserve better character development
I dont understand why some people like batman 89 but not batman returns, both are superb. Brilliant performances from both danny devito and Michelle Pfeiffer
I love Batman, he's my favorite fictional character of all time. I. can't wait for this new premiere and can't wait to check out Matt Reeves' new Batman movie ! Batman Forever !
This was when Tim was at the top of his game. He was excited and ambitious and had something to say. He started to lose this after Sweeney Todd. Batman Returns is so fantastic, I'll never forget seeing the poster when I was 7 and wanting to desperately know more.
@@WinningProduction420 umm I haven’t seen that I’m talking about this and what he said here. You have other information that’s cool but I’m talking about again what he said here.
@@cmbrock1 watch it too when you get the chance.. besides. WB didn't want Burton back anyways. They wanted Batman to be more kid friendly and marketable, especially after the backlash this movie got.
I loved Batman and Batman Returns. Tim Burton is one of my favorite directors and Danny Elfman is proba5 my favorite soundtrack/music artist in movies.
I initially thought Robert was playing Terry not Bruce. I’m still disappointed he isn’t. We really need Batman Beyond movie. And Michael is at the right age to play an older Bruce.
@amarawinchester963 We did too when we heard Robert's, but maybe it wasn't the time yet. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to hope again? We hot so many Spiderman, why not Batman Beyond?
I was 11 years old in 1992 and this is still my favorite movie. Batman and Catwoman s relationship. Catwoman and the penguin. Christmas at Gotham. Come on! Its Tim Burton! It's perfect !!!!!
Tim Burton was a GENIUS for this one! Sure, it had its campy moments, and some of the dialogue was a bit cheesy ... but the storyline, overall aesthetic and production design of this film was AMAZING! And even though the Penguin & Catwoman had different origin stories compared to the original comics, they did a fantastic job with practically creating them from scratch as far as image and persona goes! Danny DeVito, and ESPECIALLY Michelle Pfeiffer, were great in playing their roles!
I heard someone say this before and I agree, "Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman in Batman Returns isn't comic accurate at all, but she's still the best live action Catwoman we have."
This guy wanted to remain in the shadows not revealing himself Tim understood the Batman better than anyone else Looking forward to Keaton returning in the flash
I miss the Batman films where Gotham City looked like an actual comic book city, whimsical and full of personality, instead of just a version of Chicago or New York with different signs we always get these days.
This is an incredible film. Whether McDonald's got angry about its marketing or whether it was wrongly aimed at children is another matter, but the film was and is spectacular.
As of right now Batman Returns is the best Batman film. I have loved it since I was a kid and it’s a shame that the studio didn’t try to keep Burton and Keaton for the other films, they would have been incredible but that’s another timeline.
So unfortunate they did not want Tim Burton to do the 3rd. He seemed to be really into it and probably had some very impressive ideas. A third film by him would have been epic.
Both Tim Burton's Batman movies are iconic and really the launching point for superhero movies. Batman & Batman Returns still hold up to this day. It was the watered down junk that came after that which killed the franchise for a time.
That first lady who spoke was completely right. This batman was so dark and complex to me at the time. I'm a huge Batman fan but i was just too young at 13 to appreciate the film.
Burton was the right guy at the right place with the right crew. I don’t think we will ever get a Batman experience like this again. They should’ve let him continue.
Batman Returns holds a very special place in my heart, this is my firat big cinema experience as a child and i watched it with my late father. This is also my favorite interpretation of Gotham City on screen.
Batman return it's a grade film of the year the story is amazing I like with the way the movie play I'm a huge big Batman fan I was a kid I to now on 47 year old
@@maybetoby True as well.Seems like Batman was Burton's baby like Spider-Man was for Raimi it just the studios were greedy and their cake and eat it too.
Went to the cinema on my own for the first time to see this age 12 and on vacation. Stood in the que to get in while my parents did other things with my sister. I noticed someone it was my uncles step son... My sorta older cousin. Sat with him and his friend had a great time. Loved the first film totally enjoyed the second and the bonus... I had a massive crush on MPf from seeing her in grease 2 as a youngster. Keaton is the bat and Burton made the atmosphere that no batman film has ever captured since
