Parental groups ruined a lot of movies. Look at the first Ninja Turtles movie. It was near perfect. It had just the right balance of the seriousness of the comics and the comedy from the cartoon. So what happened? Parents who took their kids to see the movie didn’t realize that it was based more on the comics than the cartoon and felt the movie was too inappropriate for kids. The moralists complained and as a result, the sequel was toned down, lighthearted and dumb to the point where the Turtles weren’t even allowed to use their weapons most of the time. Instead, the sequel taught small children how to assault people with objects regularly found around the house such as yo-yos and sausage sticks. Way to go, parents, you dumbasses.

So, the way I took the Superman "joke" at 6:50 was, although Clooney's delivery is OFF by a LONG shot, Batman was referring to Robin annoyingly demanding a car of his own. That's why Superman works alone, so he doesn't have to deal with a bratty sidekick demanding things.

So why is there so much Batman "fans" that don't know that the comics of the sixties were _exactly_ like the Adam West show... making this movie pretty damn comic accurate. Not saying it's a great movie, but "fans" that hate it for "not being accurate" are just ignorant of the comics history. Also, this is still the only Batman film where Batman doesn't kill anyone. BTW, Nolans films are the _least_ accurate adaptations, despite their quality. That's coming from someone who's been reading comics for 30 years... "realism" is never what I read comics for... and _that's_ how you can spot actual comic readers, we don't give 2 shits about realism.

Funny as a kid, I watched the hell out of this movie along with Batman Forever. It even introduced me to the character as a whole, and I've come to learn and accept that Schumacher's Batman feels more comical with some understanding to it, with Burton putting up a more darker tone but still finds some understanding. Needless to say as I grew up, I began to understand the critics bashing at this movie and it's completely valid. At one point, I sided with them too. But in the end, I only say my critics, and then put them away and accept them for what they are. But if I'm telling the truth... I don't think I'll ever hate this movie. I don't have to like it or not, but I can't hate it. It would just hurt my childhood, and I can't go through with it. So regardless of it's flaws and wrongs, I've accepted it for what it is. An imperfect, full of flaws, and a messy movie that is Batman & Robin.

Batman and Robin (1997) is one of the panned film ever. I agree with everyone who hates this flick. Mostly due to the performances and child-like nature of this film. Similar to Battlefield Earth and this film they both bombed so hard at the box office. At least, Batman Forever and Batman Returns was better than this 1997’s film. Thanks to the failure of this film, we got Christopher Nolan to reboot this series starting with 2005’s Batman Begins, 2008’s The Dark Knight, and 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises. And, re-rebooted with Zack Synder’s Batman with Ben Affleck in the role from Batman V Superman (2016) and Justice League (2017/ZS2021). Surprisingly, it was re-re-rebooted with Robert Pattinson in the role in this recent film. I do agree of letting the toy merchants being heavily involved with the project. I think, similar faith happened with 2017’s Power Rangers film from LionsGates. I think, if the Director focused on his vision instead of focusing on the toy’s vision of being like a cheap toy movie. No offense in anyway.

Phil Michaels I also feel this way. I think B&R is entertaining shlock, it's silly and it works on a basic level. I watched it for the first time when I was ten years old, so I actually disagree with Oliver because it was fun for me at that time, and still is. Of course in hindsight I would've preferred a more comic-accurate depiction of Batman, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying B&R every few years. B&R is so over-the-top silly that I think it can be forgiven. Unlike certain modern films *cough* BvS *cough* TLJ *cough* SS *cough.* Man, I need to get my cough checked out, that went on a little too long.

Phil Michaels, it just goes to show that Warner Bros. learned nothing B&R's failure. If Nolan wasn't a no-nonsense filmmaker, his movies would've ended up like crap from too much studio influence as well.

The set design and costumes was absolutely ludicrous for this movie. They took what everyone hated about Batman Forever and doubled down on it. Over the top hammy acting and stupidly unrealistic set pieces that were too comic book for a movie adaptation. Then they did away with the serious darker side of Batman Forever that was it's saving grace. It's amazing how often this happens. People make a sequel to a movie and have ZERO clue what made the first one appealing. Batman and Robin is almost like a check list of what not to do in a super hero movie.

The most frustrating part of rewatching all of these films as an adult? Realizing that this movie was better than Returns. Not trying to be contrarian or edgy, but the story actually has a structure and the characters have motivations. Returns is basically a series of vignettes with nothing in the way of connective tissue and is an absolute slog to read through.
@lwzeis

@faz6877
@faz6877 4 года назад
I don't think that means it's better than Batman Returns. The execution of B&R is still shit. Batman Returns has plenty of issues, but not nearly as many as Batman and Robin! It's not even close. I respect structure and character development, but what does it matter if it's downing in nonsense? Execution means a lot in my opinion.
@pennygadget7328
@pennygadget7328 4 года назад
@@faz6877 I absolutely agree, execution is tantamount, but a well-shot, well-acted, well-produced film can still be a nightmare if the script is trash. First examples that came to mind: Prometheus, and almost any Zack Snyder movie. For me, personally, I'd rather have it the other way around if only because a decently-written dumpster fire is kind of a fun experience... it's like you're being bombarded by terrible things, only for some great thing to suddenly shine through and you're genuinely and pleasantly surprised by the moment. The inverse is actively frustrating for me because everything being slick and well-made just makes me want to yell at the screen as it's so aggravating to watch so many people pour their heart and soul into something that doesn't deserve it.
@faz6877
@faz6877 4 года назад
@@pennygadget7328 First off 110% agree on all those elements mean nothing if the script is trash. I couldn't agree more on Prometheus and Snyder. I just meant some of Burton's execution with Batman Returns. No doubt plenty of issues! Parts of the story just feel off. By execution I meant he has a few scenes that made me feel emotion. Like Penguins death despite being strange. I thought the design of his world in BR looks spectacular. I understand how the issues of Batman Returns could make you feel that way. I'm not saying it's a great film. As you said, I have the inverse experience when watching Batman Forever. The aesthetic, performance of the villains, sillier tone. It's like the issues I take with Batman Forever suck the enjoyment right out, similar to how Batman Returns does for you. Which I respect your opinion. Valid points. We just happen to tolerate different flavors on these two films
@alfa01spotivo
@alfa01spotivo 3 года назад
not really. Selina has a whole arc about letting loose and being confused over her identity which is developed in full and helped with her scenes with bruce which make it tragic. Same with Penguin.
