Ben "From Canada" Chinapen returns with another in depth look this time at Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, the 2017 blockbuster. This isn't a take review down but in fact a look at all the things he loves including the surreal opening, the setting up of the rivalry between Batman and Superman and pearls. PEARLS. Thanks for watching.

Loved this film since day one. The extended cut just cemented my appreciation for it. One of my favorite scenes is when the bomb goes off in the court house and you see the expression on Clark's face. He's thinking "No matter what I do, now matter how good I try to be, some people in this world will never accept it or me and (to borrow a phrase from another film) just want to watch the world burn." His sense of loss, helplessness, and frustration is right there on his face. A tremendous acting achievement. The only big critique I have is they tried to cram way too much into the third act.

majority of people hated the little role of doomsday. i actually didnt mind that, because it wasnt an avengers vs thanos movie, he was just a tool for the 3 to teamup and further the plot. now that may seem like blasphemy for hardcore comic fans but maybe youre just missing the point. also people compare the actual bats vs sups fight to earlier longer material, but i actually thought sups took the heaviest beating with this one, and i loved it.

The "Bruce Wayne levitates off the ground" was a dream. It didn't actually happen. "In the dream, they took me to the light...a beautiful lie." i thought it was uncalled for, how many times do we have to watch this kid's parents die. but it is absolutely necessary to bring any depth as to why the martha scene is not a meme and it was actually properly set up, along with the nightmare at the mausoleum. the writing couldve stick the landing a bit better, but it makes sense. that trope needs to die, though, I've seen it working well exactly once: lex's letter to superman in red son.

Perfectly necessary. Basic rule of storytelling, never assume your audience already knows your character when introducing them, especially when introducing a new version of an established one. Always lay the groundwork the best way possible. Since people do have some familiarity with the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne, it didn't need ti belabor the point, and the way in which it was handled was bith very deliberate in the context of the story (since it forshadowed Batman's epiphany), and it was visually portrayed in an unbelievably iconic manner that holaged classic Batman depictions of this scene from stories like Frank Miller's Year One and The Dark Knight Returns, the primary sources of inspiration for this iteration of the character.

It's a gorgeously shot movie. Larry Fong's work may be the best thing about it honestly. I can't stop thinking about/admiring all the visuals, so many great frames and ideas buried within them. The movie is actually way smarter than the title gives it credit for. I think people just assumed a movie called Batman vs Superman would be dumb as hell but it's actually intelligent to where it went over a lot of our heads. So ambitious, it's hard for a movie like that at that budget to take that many risks like it did. It has its issues but overall I think it's great, with Ben Affleck being the best Batman and Bruce Wayne we have gotten. I think about his portrayal all the time.

Even in a well-thought out analysis of the intro, Ben missed some things. The intro of Bruce reliving his parents death and falling in a well is him reliving their death in a dream. That's why he's levitating. At the end, Bruce says, "In the dream, they took me to the light." The scene with the pearls - we see Martha go for the guy's gun, with her pearl necklace slowly flopping in the air. The gun is positioned below them at the time. Then, we see the gun pointing at her while the pearls rest ontop.

It's also incredibly important to Batman's character in this movie that his parents, (both of them, actually), fight back against their attacker. It really sets up Batman's worldview nicely when later on the movie Alfred tells him it's suicide to take on Superman, and Batman's just like, "Yeah, well, sometimes a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do." I'm pretty sure BvS is the only incarnation of the Batman origin story where his parents aren't just passively gunned down.

His twitchy demeanor and weird grunts have actually been known to be prevalent in child abuse victims in real life and his insane rambling is showing us how quick his brain runs compared to everyone else--and he knows it. His dialogue might come off as a bunch of pointless and random shit but watch it again and literally every line he says in the film as some sort of deeper meaning to it His plans, especially bombing the Capitol building and pitting Batman and Superman remain true to his philosophy of "if god is all powerful than he cannot be all good, and if he is all good then he cannot be all powerful" Regardless of what you think of this Lex, it's bullshit to attack Jesse Eisenberg for his performance because he nailed what Snyder was going for.

Being a Marvel fan makes it a lot easier to like DC movies because I can just enjoy them for what they are instead of thinking "wow, they butchered the source material". I don't have any attachment to the DC characters or feel a sense of ownership over them like I do with Marvel characters, so I don't care as much when directors/writers do their own thing. That said, I've still disliked the majority of DCEU films (Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and to lesser extent Man of Steel are the exceptions), so I'm not sure what my point was.

I think Zacks dceu wasn’t widely beloved initially because of what they came out against. Marvel was in full swing with its generic up beat action comedies. Everyone enjoyed them and that’s what they accepted as what superhero movies need to be. Zack made legitimate films. Pieces of art. That were accurate tellings of what these characters being in our world would be like. And they do a amazing job and they are extremely nuanced and deep. But because of the culture of the time people just wanted generic light hearted superhero movies. I can guarantee that Man of Steel and Batman vs superman will be viewed differently in 20 years time. They will be viewed through a different lens because people’s objectivity won’t be tinted by the marvel hue. Opinions about these films have already started shifting since their release and they will continue to do so.

There's so much more happening in this film thematically than Snyder and Terrio are given credit for. Opening shot is a coffin for a reason...we are watching a funeral dirge, which is one reason why the film is bookended with coffin shots. The film in many ways is about the death of hope, not only for Bruce, but the world as a whole as it descends into cynicism and politicized rhetoric. Bruce loses all hope in that moment when his parents are murdered. Thematically, that's why it's shown. That's why Superman dies, he is the sigil bearer for hope. "And what falls is fallen." Fallen as in damned. Damned as in residing in Hell. Hell as in in the place that has a sign above the entrance, "Abandon all hope, Ye who enter here." Bruce has condemned himself to being at his lowest point in his life and he gives you the two flashbacks who made him fall to where he is now when he says this narration...after "Mankind is introduced to the Superman". This story is not about Batman fighting Superman, it is about a fallen man finding hope again and climbing back up towards redemption. The Martha moment (which I admit could have been done a little better, but I still would have used her name in the moment) shows him the person he has vilified could be his brother, or even himself which is why the name Martha is significant. Not only that, he sees this person as human for the first time, and therefore fallible but not inherently evil, which is what he will become if he commits this act of cold blooded murder. He's not just refusing to take a life, he's refusing to take the final step into hell. He has a brief flicker of hope. And in that moment he begins his road to redemption.

I certainly respect your opinion! but do you think people are really not smart enough to figure the themes out in BvS? I think it's more about the execution people have a problem with. Films can have intriguing themes, morals, messages, ext. but if isn't executed in a way that tells a great story how can people really enjoy? I don't think there are many people who can't figure out the "Martha" stuff, it's the fact it shouldn't be there in the first place and just cringeworthy as a scene and idea. I would argue they hit you over the head with the message rather than subtly letting you think and figure it out! I'd be shocked if anyone doesn't understand the meaning, it's just dumb. I completely agree with the symbolism of Batman and Superman fighting. I'm with you there. My issue is the reasoning in the story for them actually fighting. It feels like the notion of these two icons fighting was decided on, then try to figure out a story of why they would actually fight (which plenty of comics to pull from!). I just find the whole reasoning for Batman to want to murder Superman dumb. We know Batman got a bird's eye view of the MoS. How can the worlds greatest detective not figure out Superman just saved us from Zod? It's made really obvious Zod was the bad guy. A logical Batman would be suspicious, but to spend 2 hours building to a fight based on Snyders logic doesn't fit. And the whole Martha line is just synonymous with the entire writing style of the film. Snyder wants you to completely shut off your brain, which is fine to a degree, but it's such a weakly structured story. Snyder wants you to just be happy Batman and Superman are fighting, the "why" / story part are not important. I can enjoy the theme or message all day! But doesn't change the fact the execution of the story (and Doomsday) is problematic.

@@faz6877 the meaning is the why, if you don't understand why the characters are acting in that way I don't think you've actually understood the film. Snyder's not a brain shut off director. The only reason his films are still discussed because they are so thought provoking and meta to the point of it seeming dumb. When most people think about a film, they probably only think for a minute or so, whereas if you try to apply that logic to Snyder, his films would look dumb. His films provoke thought for many years to come. I've spent 3 years thinking about MoS nuances and meaning.

Batman is the worlds greatest detective but he can't figure out Superman just saved the world from Zod? It makes absolutely zero sense why they are fighting in this movie. It's the definition of contrived. Have you read Dark Knight Returns? How can you support replacing that classic dialogue with the "Martha" scene. And you are telling me I don't understand? I'm happy to discuss / debate the film, but that "you just don't understand" is a weak argument. You do realize they make the message incredibly obvious. I can't ignore poor story telling.

@bigevilworldwide1 It all comes down to "runtime." WB head-honchos chopped the film down for the theatrical release, because the rich people funding the movie did not want to pay the extra 40 million dollars, out of pocket, to pay for the full version being played on a big screen. I'm sure that now, they realize their mistake. But of course, it is too late to go back and change that. When BvS came out on iTunes, I made SURE that the version I downloaded was the Ultimate Edition. Because, while I don't particularly HATE the theatrical version, I was.... underwhelmed by it. And I'm glad that I waited, because the "UE cut" has been worth the wait. To me, what I saw one day in a theatre, ONCE, four years ago, does not exist anymore. There is only the Ultimate Edition. Way too many BvS "critics" have refused to see the Ultimate Edition, because they have already reached the "pre-drawn conclusion" that it will suck just as much, if not moreso, than the theatrical cut that they hated. They couldn't be more wrong. And actually they don't know what they are missing out on!

If u noticed , the title card is also from Batman's p.o.v :- "Mankind is introduced to THE Superman" (as in he's some sort of a faceless phenomena)

Mashing up Death of Superman and the Dark Knight returns into one movie starring Homelander, Aging Batman and Riddler's Lex Luthor was certainly an ambitious vision.

It's very good. It was very symbolic. It has it's flaws but still a beautiful movie. I love how it shows the the suffering that comes with being Superman.

As much shit as this movie got, even for me the first 15 minutes set a REALLY good impression. You could tell this was a blockbuster film in scale and visuals. A lot of the ideas and themes never clicked with me until seeing this but now that i have that perspective, i think I’m starting to like this movie

whatever bad you can tell about BvS, it's a monument while movie like Captain Marvel is like a cheap chicken pate sandwich
@brewdaly1873
@brewdaly1873 4 года назад
I wouldn't call it a monument at all. It had grand ambitions, and you can tell it did, but it ultimately failed to live up to those ambitions. The idea was amazing, the result was overwhelming. Even this video that is supposed to praise it couldn't come up with anything more than "The set up was pretty cool." By comparison, the only ambitions Captain Marvel had were "be fun, sell toys to girls." But if it was released in phase 1 of the MCU, I guarantee it wouldn't get as much criticism as it has. It's not a bad movie at all, it's just a very generic, paint-by-numbers action movie. Really though, it's ridiculous to even compare the two. You wouldn't compare Kick-Ass to V For Vendetta. Or Deadpool to The Incredibles. They aren't trying to accomplish the same thing. Comparing the two is stupid and pointless.

I really like the video but it also highlights my biggest issue with BvS and Zack Snyder. He is all style but no substance. Yeah his movies are visually amazing but if you don't have the most important part in a movie, the story and characters, be actually good then it is still garbage.

I always saw his films as being stories within stories. DotD is a bout pop culture being shallow and how mainstream media consumes our humanity. 300 is about how these heroes and archetypes influence humanity yet they are one dimensional and create a cycle of archetypes in history, with people wanting to be like their heroes and they become them, but they are empty on the inside. Watchmen is about seeing these heroes fall and trying to find good in them but they are human and corrupt. The film is about finding hope in this truth. SP and LotG are about stories and beliefs being sick, sad and twisted escapist, meaningless fantasies that distract us from reality rather than reaffirming it. We project meaning onto stories and therefore the true story is inside us, they're about letting go and transcending ideologies and choosing who you want to be. MoS is about going on the Kierkegaard existential journey to the leap of faith from the aesthetic. He chooses to be who we is not being defined by past ideologies and incarnations of Superman. BvS is about seeing that we should see the humanity in each other and that psychologically projecting our beliefs onto a figure makes them empty and alienated. It's that expecting a messiah to save us or a devil to punish us is the beautiful lie. We must move past ideologies and beliefs and see the underlying humanity. Now tell me how is that style and no substance?

Aarondev Atwal what i think he is referring to is the thing snyder most often does. his forte is cinematography so his efforts lie within that realm visual storytelling and thematic elements, all things that could be grasped from an image. hence: style. the substance comes from the story it’s self. in bvs it’s an overbearing sense of story. there is so much he wants accomplished that at times he forgets how to connect it or does so poorly. the martha scene is a prime example of this, it’s set up with the opening scene but clark calling her by her name is distracting from what it is trying to pay off

@@jyotektosgaimur Because the characters are flat and one-dimensional and the story makes no sense...? Listen, if you loved these movies and found all these deep meanings in them then I'm very happy for you. I just didn't. I mean, you could give ANY movie the benefit of the doubt and find a way to read hidden meanings and important, substantive themes into them if you try hard enough: The Transformers franchise is a scintillating and incisive parody of the modern action blockbuster using frenetic, over-the-top, impossible-to-follow CGI to critique the industries over-reliance on flashy action over character development. It also shines a horrifying light on racism in America by knowingly casting the villains as ebonics-spouting, gun-toting thugs even though they are ALIEN ROBOTS. PLUS it satirises the gross mass-commodification of the cinematic arts by saturating the movie with every product placement imaginable, including making one of the Transformers, the literal STARS of the movie, turn into a Pill Speaker from Beats By Dre, thus informing the audience that if we continue along our current trends in filmmaking we will arrive at a point in the near future at which ART is literally PRODUCT. Now of course there's not even the remotest indication that these themes were intended to be drawn from ANY of the Transformers movies, but if that's how I choose to interpret them then there's no way of proving that they are NOT there. Most Zack Snyder movies are much the same (Dawn of the Dead being he exception because that is a legitimately brilliant movie).

@@LoganBluth I disagree with the idea that Zach Snyder doesn't purposefully add in that artistic commentary because of his track record. But I have to slow clap on that comment. It was brilliant and the best counter argument I have ever read. Bravo.

I watched it last night, really the only bad part was the Martha part between them, but if make or think of it in your own way. Bruce finally figures out that he is sorta a human. There’s many ways you can interpret with it, if you are talking about dooms day withy eh visuals he looks just like the comics. With being zod is different but I dig it.
