Ben "From Canada" Chinapen is back, fresh off a rewatch of the Michael Bay Transformers movies. And guess what? He loves them. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THAT? As always he brings much insight into these over maligned set of movies with some observations that make you go...wait a minute, are these movies the best movies ever made? I mean no obviously but people they did well for a reason. Thanks for watching.

I think that like, the apocalyptic stakes and human bravery on display through such a jaw dropping, reality bending (cause I mean, the gravity shifting, the floating islands, the giant robots, it's all very absurd but in an epic way) visuals and situations, it's like yes, I get what Ben is saying about the power of spectacle but... At the same time I don't care about these characters and this epic moment is at the tail end of a long slog of unlikeable one dimensional characters, crass humor, a total nonsense plot that just *barely* manages to reach this apocalyptic finale in a way that at least somewhat sensibly puts those pieces together, and like, god imagine if a movie with substance gave us such a mind blowing action packed finale instead?

Exactly. Sometimes youtubers are so good at making a point and explaining it with visials that it sounds like fact and you forget that art is supposed to be subjective. Yeah these movies are dumb but fucking awesome at the same time. Sometimes hating on successful movie franchises becomes trendy. I had the same experience when Cosmonaut Picture Show made a video explaining why the fast and furious movies are just plain anime fun and thats enough reason to enjoy them. I honestly think that the idea of an Optimus Prime who grows tired and weary after millions of years of war and has to start resorting to killing his enemies in cold blood as a result is a very good one. @meateaw
@meateaw 3 года назад
It is a fantastic thing; but I don't see how transformers is the best example. Because, while the scene he describes is in isolation, a passable example, you have to take it in context. And in context of the utter trash it is surrounded by; the emotional response is severely damaged. In this instance, it was because he hadn't paid proper attention to the first (guessing) 2.5 hours of the movie before he started really paying attention. - He had to literally ignore most of the movie, for this scene to actually give him the emotions he felt. There are plenty of films with amazing and powerful singular scenes. But if the rest of the movie doesn't set you up for it; the human response can often be completely lost.

I've always enjoyed the Transformers movies, but the fact that the fifth one disregarded so many aspects of its own canon kinda ruined it for me. I liked the spectacle but I felt the script was very lazy, which I only felt in Revenge of the Fallen, and that was because of the writers' strike. The Wahlberg trilogy had potencial but now it seems we will never see its conclussion, the fifth one will be the final installment, which is why I tend to watch the LaBeouf trilogy and stop there, even if I still enjoy the fourth one, because the lack of an ending frustrates me. I hope they somehow finish the Wahlberg trilogy, but I doubt they will.

I 100% agree. The massive amounts of retconning in TLK is what ruins it for me. In DOTM, Cybertron is completely destroyed. Becoming a sort of wormhole collapsing in on itself because of the destruction to the space bridge. Then all of a sudden its (more or less) in one piece in TLK. HUH??? HOW????? For a lot of people(like me) it also has to do with the fact that it doesn’t take much to make someone happy. The Transformers movies are awful, but they’re my favorite movie franchise and the only movie franchise I’ve seen the entirety of multiple times. Star Wars comes close. I like the Transformers movies because they satiate my yearn for Autobots beating down Decepticons in IMAX quality. I can find little things in these movies to enjoy which is why I like them so much.

I don't know if Ben will ever see this comment, but what he says about the score "We Have to Go" from Transformers 5 and his entire encapsulation of that moment is something I have needed to hear from another individual for so long. There's just something very special about that soundtrack in particular that I agree frames the spectacle in an entirely new light. I've had this thought on my brain for years since TheLastKnight released but never have I seen someone articulate it so perfectly. I love to watch them, and yes I totally agree with most people that there is a majority of hot garbage writing in this franchise, but I watch nontheless.

They had the loudest woooooaah reactions I ever heard and a lot of scenes that everyone uses to talk trash about the series like the beats or the bud light product placements got some of the biggest audience laughs I ever heard and afterwards people where all excited talking about how much fun the movie was. Compare that to a lot of critically praised movies I also watched opening weekend but with a completely dead audience full of people on the phone. Transformers aren’t great movies overall and it’s easy to find things to change but for what they are they are amazing. I love the first 3 movies. Growing up and rewatching them were some of my memorable moments in my life. The 4th movie I felt did a great job setting up a world after the Battle of Chicago. Where the humans are now in charge of hunting down supposedly Decepticons (and Autobots but the higher ups in the government were unaware about that.) Because of this, Optimus feels betrayed and struggles on regaining his faith for humanity. I'm not exactly a big fan on the 5th movie soley because of its horrible story and writing. However, what I do like is the scene where Cade Yeager reminds the military (TRF) about how it was the Autobots that returned after being banished and saved humanity during the Battle of Chicago. But after the battle, the world tossed them aside and gave up on them. The scene where the military takes off their badges really shows they have realized their mistake and are willing to fight with the Autobots again.

The third movie is definitely my favorite for a similar reason. In my opinion, it has the best plot out of all of the others, and we get to see the full might of the Decepticons. They took over an entire city in less than a day. It really shows that if they had the resources, the Transformers could completely dominate humanity with ease.

Something Ben touched on in this, and was totally skipped in the other guys' videos is the soundtrack for these movies. The stories range from mediocre to garbage, and the VFX are groundbreaking and amazing, but messy and difficult to follow, but Steve Jablonsky's score - in every one of them - is just stunning. It fits the spirit of the Transformers so well, big, powerful, grand, beautiful, and I really think it carries these movies. It's the biggest thing that was missing in Bumblebee.

@@arry7246 Yeah, I agree. Honestly all they had/have to do is make a prequel film based solely on cybetron. I really like the idea of the war on cybetron being way more brutal than usual. @@exzyyd392 I'd rather just see normal Optimus first, then see him fall. The problem with these movies is that they set up these great concepts (The battle of Chicago, humans vs Transformers, Transformers during history) but the people in charge of these movies are too braindead to do anything with them. Prime losing his shit over time is just another example of that.
