Your videos are just amazing. I am always looking forward to a new episode. Often in your videos you can see in the background the ms 20 mini synthesizer. I have it myself, and I would like to find out in a clear way how and in what productions you use it.
Junkie XL Awesome job on the soundtrack i loved it. Did you also compose the soundtrack for the first ever teaser of Bvs which they showed at SDCC 2014? if so,is there a tittle to it beacuse that theme/music blew my mind. Iv been looking everywhere but i cant find it. thank you and good luck
IDK if this is on purpose (i hope it is) Trippy Piano stuff at 20:28 sounds like a distorted version of the cues from both Krypton's Last and Launch on the Man of Steel OST
i thought it was pretty obvious, but again, in the scene you can't hear it clearly. Still adds to the scene obviously. Is kinda a "ghosts of the past haunt Superman again" sound. Tom, if in the future you can make this very same thing but with the track in Mad Max called "brothers to arms" it would be great! That track has an "epic" uprising part that is just so good!!! And would be interesting to check out.
In an earlier video you talked about why there are no memorable themes anymore in films, but I'd love to hear how the work process is like with directors who DO want memorable scores. Like Zack Snyder and the score in this video has fantastic reoccuring themes from earlier in the film. I am interested to hear how the director approaches you for that and how you execute it. Because these scores are fantastic!
That's completely normal and a sign that the composer was successful in creating something distinctive and dynamic that ties well into the story and action.
Tom I just wanted to thank you for this. BvS is hands down my favorite score of all time. And I just dreamed of being able to listen to how this was composed and put together, and this is no longer a dream as of this minute. This will help me in my orchestration/ composing education a LOT! Thanks again. Really appreciate these videos. I'm ready with my Oxygen 49. :)
Hi Tom! First of all thanks a lot for making these awesome videos! I have a question that hopefully you could answer in a future episode. In the Batman v Superman movie, there is a scene where a bunch of bad guys are waiting in a parking lot, in front of an elevator, waiting for Batman to come out of the elevator to ambush him, but he comes through the floor. The music in this scene really caught my attention, at first it sound like a synth pad but it starts turning into a choir of screaming voices (?) Very hard to tell what it is actually. Please could you tell us something about this cue? I would love to know more about it!! Thanks!!!
What is crazy is every note, every moment played here - I can tell you exactly what part of the BvS fight it is at. I was in band as a kid, so grew up loving music and making it...love this stuff, you earned a new sub!
Junkie thank you so much for this video! I listen to your BvS soundtrack almost everyday! The songs really speak to me and it is beyond amazing! And to see you show us the amount of layers and dedication this soundtrack has is entirely jaw dropping! I would like to let you know that the DC fans really need you right now. Your talent to score Justice League for the extended edition for Blu-ray release is highly demanded. We deeply miss you and your imagination with how you designed the DCEU musical scores with Hans Zimmer. We were sadly unsatisfied with Danny Elfman's score. As much as we respect his past musical creations, this one in particular (Justice League) was a disappointment. We completely disagree to the decision Joss Whedon had made and it was a giant mistake. I'm literally speaking from the bottom of my heart and I cannot filter my feelings of how much I am deeply saddened with you not being able to score the Justice League film. It was a giant moment in cinematic history that was completely diminished over changes that was highly unacceptable. We need you Junkie XL! Thank you! #justiceforjunkie
Thank you very much for this episode, sir! I love BvS score so much so this is absolute pleasure to watch! And i have feeling that You had much greater contribution to this score than you want us to think, i can hear your signature all over and i love it! Sir, you can't imagine how eager i'm to hear your Justice League score! Counting days...
Tom, I just wanted to thank you for all your effort. This channel is a gold mine for the present and future producers/composers, which is absolutely amazing.
Tom, as a fellow Dutchie, i love your work. The Man of Steel and BvS Scores are my favourites and i listen to it everyday! Keep up the good work! Succes met de toekomst!
Tom, beyond your great talent and human qualities, your private libraries are amazing ! As a composer, when we can not afford to produce libraries of this quality, we are not in the game and we are naturally excluded from these big productions. However, thank you for sharing these videos in addition to your work, you have a good philosophy.
I like that both Hans and Junkie have similar styles of writing so if you watching and appreciating what JXL is sharing, he is giving huge secrets on film scoring.
The photography, the exaggerate extremely epileptic camera movements, the dialogues, the editing and the "bad" vfx (they are not that bad but the photography and the style of the movie have made those look awful) The first shots of Gotham were very good indeed, but the main problem with the "whole" is that every shot is made to be more cool as it can be, loosing the narrative part of the story. For me it could be a good movie, but it missed the opportunity. But this is only my opinion, don't take it as a Spielberg's masterclass ;)
So Many references to culture in these character's soundtracks for Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: classical music, spiritual, military, alien, country, spy, greek warrior, gothic, apocalyptic, hopeful. Thankyou for Bringing DC's universe to life. Maybe I'll look for you when I bring my franchise to life.
So inspiring.. Tom makes me realize people of his caliber are also human! There's hope for the rest of us! Incredible of him to share on the inner cogs of his process - what a guy! Anybody perhaps know what that choir library might be?! Was so stoked to get into it a little more... Think it sounds so sick.
31:00 my favorite part. Here you can see how subtle details and combination of what you have and new sounds can bring in an emotional part. IS GORGEOUS!
+junkiexlofficial I am always blown away by the ambience of your sounds. Could you please share your ideas about reverb? Are you using a hardware reverb, a virtual one, or, I imagine, a combination? I'd love to know what you use for reverb. Thanks, and thank you for the great information!
I maybe have not such a proper music production related question, but it's something I've always wanted to know since I watch your studio sessions. So, what's the total power consumption - roughly - of your studio and gears, and are those machines always turned on?
I came here from AfterInfinity's dubstep song that used vocal samples from this video. soundcloud.com/afterinfinity-music/signature-riddim-feat-junkie-xl
Junkie can you leak the complete score of Batman v Superman? There are so many tracks that are absolutely amazin, but are no where to be found. One of my favorites is when Superman takes Doomsday to space and gets nuked. The music was incredible, but I never found a clear version.
Hi Junkie, thank you for the great and detailed inside look. At 22:50 you talk about "Make Noise". What modules do you use or can you advice some modules? Thank you
I really want you to compose the music for "The batman" movie, because it seems like you REALLY are mastering his fears, pain and feelings and show that in the music language! Overall, soundtracks are supposed to tell a story! I really hope you get to do it! So awsome man, and best of all, you still got time to make these youtube videos while you work/are busy! This is called talent on high level ❤
Great scores... I just wish they didn't release the CD soundtracks distorted. Why I started buying Vinyl soundtracks! Why maximize the music? just put it on CD the way it sounds in the film, like complete scores for example!! I'm still waiting for the Studios to place the 5.1 Hi res recorded audio on a Blu Ray disc so we can enjoy it the way it is intended! Kinda like Isolated Score!!
You claim you’ve recorded 10 live drummers just like in Man Of Steel, but the drums in the demo sound exactly like the ones in the final mix AND in almost ALL of your other scores. Not that I’m complaining, though. Those drums sound amazing.
Hi, maybe it's a dumb question and sorry if the answer is in the video, English is not my primary language so I might have skipped it ..! I just would like to know if you produced this track with you having the movie video or not? What is the case in general? What is your process to match exactly the final film? Do you produce what you want (with some instructions of course) and then someone else is in charge to match your production with the movie or do you produce while having the movie on screen? Sorry if I'm no clear, again, English is not my first language.
Your videos are just amazing. I am always looking forward to a new episode. Often in your videos you can see in the background the ms 20 mini synthesizer. I have it myself, and I would like to find out in a clear way how and in what productions you use it.
Can you do a video showing your machine room (and sharing your current slave specs) and how you're currently working with Pro Tools (sync, printing or batch exporting, etc.)
great video! really like it! you're such a good man, really appreciate that work of yours! and i have a question - who is responsible for Wonder Woman theme? you, Hanz, or it was collab?
@JunikieXL I see what you did there @5:07. Absolutely amazing @5:07 - 5:10 and forward. (those who watched MoS or know it deeply) That's the Cue to Zod's otherwise menacing "WWwunwawawawawa" (world engine sound almost) entrance in the "You are not alone" Trailer after the drums/ deep brass "DUN-dun-dun, DunDunDunDun Dunnn-Wunanananna..." except it quickly feeds into (alternatively) Batman's representation as an enemy, almost attaching him as "an enemy of Superman" with that one little 4 second transition... That's what I see when I close my eyes and think of the 2 (soon to be 3) movie arch... Love it, Huge fan...!
This is a gift, thank you! Now, will you change the tone of the Batman theme since we will see a more hopefull Batman? If only you could do a track like marathon or the greeks are winning... those fits perfectly with what the Batman represents!
Tom, you are a great sound sculptor and an inspiration, i've listened to and love everything you've made since 1998, your work in the movie industry is simply amazing, Keep up the good work !
Wow I'm buzzing after watching your video, that was really interesting! the sounds and arrangement are amazing! I did my 1st score last year, the movie is out next month ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-paJYAk6Lkmc.html Wish I had of started with a tempo map, it seems so obvious now! Is the picture always locked before you begin composing ? There was a lot of last minute changes to that movie I worked on and it caused havoc! Thanks for that video really enjoyed it Dan
I love the humbleness you have!! Sharing this with everyone is such an inspiration! This work is just amazing and I love your studio! Just great to see the inspirational people in the industry give back and take time to share the workflow is beyond amazing! Thank you!
Okay... "SAM drone radiation" So, several resonant filters. But, did you simply split a single oscillator out to multiple filters, or run the filters in serial, or what? It's such a fascinating noise!
omg some of my favorite sound design in the movie was when superman got kryptonite gas in his eyes, you can sort of hear this weird thing in the background, always sounded very interesting to me... very cool to see what it actually is
Tom how do you create the those color shade ''across the grid'' for tempo / signature /Marker tracks etc ? I can't figure this out on Color Options in Cubase. Thanks
hi junkie, im a huge fan of your music for a long time now (i still have a few vinyl records of yours when i used to dj) i actually produce my own music. one thing i've always had a problem with is being able to run lots of vsts at once. i thought i got a faster computer but it's still hard on my cpu. do you have any information on what type of computer i can get that can run so much software at once without choppy playback. right now i've resorted to using all samples because it's easier on my cpu but it looks like you have actual vst's running for this tremendous composition. thanks for any help.
