I used a 2023 S60 Recharge Plug in hybrid with the extended range batteries to shoot this video. After receiving two questions from viewers asking about best practices for range and managing your EV battery, I decided to make this video. Plug in hybrids have a number of settings compared to EV's and this shows how to manage them. Topics covered include:
- Why is preconditioning so important
- Using B drive and D drive brake energy regeneration
- How navigation gives you Smart Energy Distribution
- Auto, Hold and Charge buttons

Thank you very much Jebbie for making this video. I was just about to click on the link you provided and saw your new post. This clearly explains why I Went through 10% of a charge traveling only 14 miles, mostly highway with cruise control on. It was nearly 100F that day. I had not preconditioned the battery. Thanks to you, I know that I should do this now.

This is a GREAT video. I just got my XC60 Recharge in June 2023. The head mechanic at my dealership told me that I should wait for the battery to be 25% or less charged before plugging the car to recharge. That is the best way to keep a high usable battery range in the long term. Then he spoke of a way I could use the AC to drain the battery at my house if its level is too high… before plugging it. I have not been able to figure that yet. Also, how do you « pre-condition » the car? Thanks again for such a useful video. Volvo should have done this a long time ago….

Preconditioning just means setting the cabin temperature to generally heat the car and try to get it it to 72 degrees. This gives the optimal environment for the battery to operate most efficiently. You do this through the app but you can also manually switch the climate control on too. I definitely recommend this for cold winter conditions to get the best possible range and for comfort too. I think your mechanic was talking about charging cycles. Most of the articles I have read on this say that a charging cycle is a complete 0 to 100 %. Whether that is 5 charging sessions of 20% or two 50% sessions, they are both still one cycle. I therefore am less concerned about frequency rather than charging to 100% regularly or fast charging in a pure EV. But I encourage you to research on charging cycles because it is slightly controversial and I have heard many views on it. The PHEV is so easy because they took all the guess work out. There is no setting for amps or to limit the battery. It takes care of all of that for you. Thanks for watching and commenting on an interesting topic.

Hello Jebbie, thanks for posting this helpful video. Question on B mode. Will this regenerative breaking charge the battery for more electric miles on “Hold” or does it need to be “Charge” or “Auto”?

I have a 22.5 ER XC90 Recharge, and always leave mine in hybrid mode; When I know my trip will exceed the "electric range" of the car (about 38-40 miles when fully charged) I'll also use the Sensus GPS, allowing the car's computer to determine the best places to used electric versus ICE. I would be most interested in how fuel economy on your trip would is affected if you allow the car to do all the control. It certainly is easier to do, and if the trip is to be a "round trip", as most are, enter your origin as the destination and your intended destination as a "waypoint". I've been very happy with this technique and find I usually roll into my driveway just as the electric range drops to zero.

John thanks for watching and for sharing your method. I think it is great that you are planning round trip and using the GPS to get maximum use of the battery. I don't drive PHEV everyday so this is useful to share. If you left in hybrid and let the car control everything I think you would still get good economy but I think you are probably getting a much better result by using all the options. Thanks

Thank you for sharing this video, it's extremely helpful with all the tips. I have one question related to hybrid (auto), when I set the destination in google maps far away from the EV range, the little indicates "smart energy distribution" never showed up. Is there any pre-required condition I need to pay attention?
@JebRevsUp
@JebRevsUp Год назад
Lihang thanks for the comment. My understanding is that you need to set a destination. After that two conditions need to be met you - you need to have hybrid drive mode selected and the battery usage should be in auto mode. Those were the only things that I saw in all our material. Having said that one problem I have been having is that we don't get any PHEVs in inventory. They all get sold before reaching us and supply has been short for awhile. I therefore have not had much opportunity to physically try out all the functions in the new PHEV Google system. I would love to hear from all of you owners out there on any PHEV related subjects.

I have a 2022 XC40 Twin Ultimate and the car doesn’t talk to the Volvo app in terms of battery charge. Volvo say they’re working on it. Anyone else had this issue?

Good job, as always. Thanks for getting through the points quickly. Related question: There is a major disagreement between the charge time completion indicator in the car versus the App indication. The App is correct; the car is way off. Any thoughts?
@JebRevsUp
@JebRevsUp Год назад
Gary I have not heard anything about one being more reliable than the other. I would love to hear what others have experienced. Occasionally I have had app connectivity issues so if I had to guess I would say the car indicator is more reliable. If I come across anything relating to this I will get back to you.

Do you have any fixes for the common problem of the Smart energy distribution using navigation system not working?
@JebRevsUp
@JebRevsUp 9 месяцев назад
Can you give more specifics? It is not perfect but I can tell it is adjusting to my route. Eg. Drive to richmond two weeks ago. Forgot to charge the XC40 so took the S60 instead. Even though I had full battery gas engine kicked in immediately for nice clear roads and saved battery then I hit roadworks for miles and used up all the battery and continued on gas. That couldn’t be random so I’m curious to know your experience as a PHEV owner.

Thank you from Thailand. Your video is very clear and give nice details. I would like to ask you a question, is it possible a setting up a round trip on google map without using the voice command to add a stop? So far google doesn't support Thai command Very appropriate if you could figure out.
@JebRevsUp
@JebRevsUp Год назад
Tawan, that is fantastic question. As far as I am aware the only way you can add a waypoint is with selecting from the categories shown. Eg ..fuel, restaurants etc.. the second method is as you mentioned using the voice function. Excellent feedback and I hope Google does add the ability to manually type waypoints in future updates. Thanks for watching

Some interesting thoughts but I'm not sure that your definition of 'preconditioning' is accurate or that the approach that you suggest would be very effective. On a Tesla preconditioning actively heats the battery pack in very cold conditions (at least that is what I understand). So this is built into the battery. On the Volvo Recharges (I have an XC 60 T8 2024) the battery is underneath the centre console. Yes if you turn on the cabin warming (or cooling) you will have SOME impact on the temperature of that battery but it would take a LONG time to bring that big brick up to or down to an ideal temp if it has been sitting for hours.
@JebRevsUp
@JebRevsUp 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for commenting. You are right that Tesla does use a different system and definition of preconditioning. In the Volvo manual preconditioning is used to describe and parked climate control before you drive. Even the XC90 gas cars manual describes using parking climate as preconditioning which is definitely not the same use in most other EVs. However you are right that it is parking climate and not battery heating such as Tesla or I3 etc.. it is powered by high voltage battery not the 12 v and 30 mins of preconditioning prior to driving does cause the battery to heat up as a result so here is Volvos manual recommendation for the XC40 - “In a low temperature for the high voltage battery, performance is temporarily reduced until the battery is heated. Connect the car for charging and use preconditioning to avoid driving with reduced performance. The car can then heat the battery prior to driving without the State Of Charge (SOC) and range falling.” I am therefore using the manufacturer recommendations in the following. We all know EVs don’t like the cold so I try to do everything possible to prolong range so in addition to preconditioning I also check tire pressures. Try to use seat heating and keep cabin climate lower and use range extender at 50 % to maximize range if on a longer drive.
