Brilliant looks like a great set up. Simple but effective

Hi, thanks for the comment. It's a very steady process and a better finish may come from using solder sticks to get a bigger pool, cheers

Very interesting, looks to like a soldering iron to me basically 👍

A great video Andy. I have read about this process in ancient battery handbooks, but good to see it demonstrated. Your video will sort of "short circuit" the leaning curve a bit if I need to give this a try. It's sort of like a strange in-between process of soldering and welding. :) Those copper jacketed carbon rods look that the ones used in the old cine projectors when they had an "Arc House" at the back to produce the light. The museum I run the radio station out of still has these projectors in operation and has a screening using them every month. The jacketed electrodes were the "new" kind and there was an older version which was straight carbon about 15mm in diameter so they were a lot thicker. They were said to produce less intensity. When used in the projectors they are run at 70 volts DC and are consumed in the process. There is a motor drive which feeds the anode electrode at a controlled rate to keep the arc path a constant distance. And the anode burns away faster than the cathode.

Hi, good to hear from you, yes it's a steady process and if the leads are too small then it's even slower. I remember a huge mercury rectifier that powered the follow spot lights (limes) before the development of tungsten bulbs that were used in such things as super troopers. When reading about this in old books it seems rather daunting but that's not the case, and may work better with stick solder that has a greater area, cheers

When i was at college we did lead burning we used a plumbers shave hook to clean the lead and tallow for flux. A file as a recall being told can embed oxides from the surface into the area to be welded.

Simon, now there's interesting. I'm assuming this was lead welding for roofing. Never thought about contamination, I suppose it's the same with wire brushes, cheers

@@TheInfoworks Yeah roofing and also wiped lead pipe joints i thoroughly enjoyed the process using turnpins and moleskin cloths to wipe the molten lead

Simon, old skills that are dying out but need to be retained, as I remember the roofing lead work was with the finest Oxy acetylene flame, very easy to make a hole, cheers

Very interesting Andy. I had a carbon arc welding setup on an old Forney straight a/c welder. The leads were old and dry rotted so I never tried it at all. But fast forward to five years ago and a buddy dropped off an outdated backpack carbon arc/oxygen cutting torch that is a popular item among fire departments. Yes, a small oxygen tank is carried right in the backpack. It’s another thing however that I have not yet attempted to try out. Have you any idea about that device ? Sorry I know my comment is a bit off topic but this is the first time I’ve seen carbon rod used in this application and I thought you if anyone may be knowledgeable on the subject. Btw... good video. I learned something new today.

Hi, I'm not familiar with the kit you describe, the only other use for carbon rods was to braze using an arc welder, but it's very poor, cheers

Very helpful Andy, thanks. My cells are all 2V 298Ah so would I need to connect 3 in series to get the required 6V or would it work at a lower voltage? Cheers
@TheInfoworks

Michael, there's the theory and practice, I think 6v would be best and good big leads, cheers

Why do you need to put solder on if it’s already welded?

@@TheInfoworks Arc is too hot for lead, it would melt but with some seriously toxic vaporizing
@TheInfoworks
@TheInfoworks 4 года назад
Yes, the same happens if a higher DC voltage is used, it's a fine balancing act to get the lead to move without the instant vaporising.

years ago arc welders came with a brazing attachment that used carbon arc the produce heat, these are the rods, cheers
