One of your best videos in terms of content. Young players don't really benefit from watching a pro creaming the ball around the nets and then asking the question "how do I do that?" They see themselves in this young lad, struggling a little bit to "get going" and listen to your advice on how they can self assess and get themselves out of that rut. I know when I was growing up I'd have certainly benefitted from the latter more!

9:20 "No one steps outside leg stump in world cricket". A little context required here I think. Obviously, many world class batsmen clear their front leg outside leg stump when they're looking to go big over cow corner...in fact, it's probably the single most prevalent move in power-hitting full stop. I thinks Scolls is referring primarily to shots where the batsman is trying to keep the ball on the ground (e.g. leading with the head in front of the pad and working the ball through mid-wicket along the ground, or the on-drive).
@cricketmentoring
@cricketmentoring 4 года назад
Thanks for clearing that up. Yes I meant when playing with a straight bat. Obviously not when power hitting. Context was lacking there but glad you understood it...

As Tom says here, having feet trigger of whatever kind is always a trade-off between timing (when you move), and balance (what it does to your body velocity, the direction it is moving at a certain speed). But triggers need not be feet triggers - they are basically any pre-delivery movement that gets you in best shape to hit the ball. They can be hand triggers to unweight the bat, or even stationary feet movements to check your balance. I am amazed by the number of times I have asked my fellow batters why do they want to trigger with their feet, and the answer basically is that they have seen international players do it on tv. But the question they should be asking, I think, is what it would bring to their game and allow them to hit better. I wonder if Tom has the same experience while coaching (I am not a coach, just a decent club player with some experience helping out younger batsmen).
@cricketmentoring

Very true mate. A trigger can be anything that gets you ready and in the best position to react and move to where the ball is. Doesn't have to be foot movement. Thanks for your thoughts legend!
@P2Maans
@P2Maans 2 года назад
Fantastic insight and refreshing too. I find even a trigger such as a slight flex of the knees gets the weight transfer going to the balls of the feet. The whole idea is head position and balance and if this basic component is getting compromised with a feet trigger, this defeats the objective. The likes of Tendulkar and Viv Richards, Sunil Gavaskar these legends faced top quality fast bowling yet they did not seem to have pre delivery feet trigger.

What's the reason for trigger movements? What are the cons of being still in your stance without triggering, or is it just the idea of forcing your feet to start moving?
@cricketmentoring
@cricketmentoring 4 года назад
Some people like to move before the ball is bowled. They feel a bit stagnant if they aren't in motion. It's a personal preference for each person and you have to figure out what works best for you...

Trigger movements and holding the bat up in the air are killing the techniques of young batsmen. First thing they need to learn is moving towards the ball and a straight bat swing into the stroke. But they're taught/influenced to bat like Steve Smith from the get go.
